’Tis the season for vacations, so let me make my pitch that the best travel is not lounging at a beach resort but rather journeying into a different world. So I preach both travel and prudence, and on a recent book tour, I found myself often asked about travel advice I had mentioned in my memoir. The most memorable travel often involves encountering something unfamiliar, so consider escaping the herds parading through Paris. A teenager from an affluent family in the New York or Boston areas would step into a different world by taking a ranch job in Wyoming. And this is the kind of travel that is not only affordable but actually pays for the experience.

Disappointing economic data recently generated worries that the Fed missed an opportunity at its meeting last week to, if not cut rates outright, send a clearer signal that easing is on the way. In the past, the Fed has implemented just nine such cuts, and all have come amid extreme duress, according to Bank of America. Lacking a catalyst for an intermeeting cut, the Fed is nonetheless expected to cut rates almost as swiftly as it hiked from March 2022-July 2023. Why wait?”LaVorgna, though, isn’t convinced the Fed is in a life-or-death battle against recession. Still, any quakes in the data, such as Friday’s downside surprise to the nonfarm payrolls numbers, could ignite recession talk quickly.

Summer 2024 could be remembered not just for its historic temperatures, but for its successive heat waves with unusual geographic reach. More than 36 million Americans were under advisories, watches or warnings for dangerous and excessive heat Saturday night, according to National Weather Service data. The Gulf Coast and the South were also in for triple-digit highs for much of the week, the weather service said. "The prolonged nature of the heat will increase the risk of heat-related illness," it said in warning that much of the West would experience dangerous heat next week. "The combination of high temperatures increasing into the lower 100s along with high humidity will result in major to extreme" risk for heat-related illness, the weather service said.

CNN —With two presidential candidates fighting over a mere 538 Electoral College votes, a tie scenario is more than possible. Those individual, competitive electoral votes in Maine and Nebraska become hugely consequential in potential tie scenarios. If there’s a 269-269 tie, or if a third party or independent candidate wins electoral votes and keeps a candidate from reaching an Electoral College majority of 270, the next step is the same. Has a contingent election happened in the years since the tied election of 1800? In 1876, when there was a contested outcome, the contingent election system was bypassed.

Wind turbines provided just 1 percent of the electricity produced in the state in 2001 and nearly 60 percent last year. How Kentucky made electricity from 2001 to 2023 Percentage of power produced from each energy sourceCoal still generates the majority of the electricity produced in Kentucky, a longtime coal mining state. Since then, virtually all of the electricity produced in the state has come from renewable sources, including hydropower, biomass, wind and solar. It has supplied more than 85 percent of the electricity produced in the state every year for more than two decades. Last year, wind supplied more than a fifth of the electricity produced in the state.

Market pricing currently indicates an absolute certainty that the Fed will approve its first reduction in more than four years — when it meets Sept. 17-18. They don't want investors to start pricing in a rate cut coming in September and there's literally nothing else that could possibly happen," he said. "Opening the door for that rate cut is probably the most appropriate thing for them at this point," Reynolds added. Expectations for easingGlenmede expects that starting in September, the Fed could cut at each of the three remaining meetings. The Fed will not provide an update on its quarterly summary of economic projections at this meeting.

Government incentives, including the Inflation Reduction Act, have encouraged individuals and private ownership groups to invest in clean energy systems. The renewable energy industry's rapid expansion in the U.S. in some cases is occurring without traditional utility protocols and regulations. The boom in renewable energy has also led manufacturers of products and services to ramp up their offerings. Inverters connected to the internet, in particular, could be controlled by hackers to reduce output or overheat home energy systems. Other major players in the U.S. utilities and renewable energy sector, including Next Era Energy, Constellation, Enphase Energy, First Solar and Sunrun, did not respond to requests for comment.

Investors are coming back into the market after bitcoin ended last week flat and ether dropped roughly 8%. Additionally, traders are watching the Federal Reserve, Bank of Japan and the Bank of England – all of which are meeting this week. Eyes are on Fed Chair Jerome Powell in particular, hoping his comments will confirm an interest rate cut in September. He also said it would be his policy to keep 100% of the bitcoin the U.S. government currently holds (about 210,000 bitcoins), serving as the beginning of a National Strategic Bitcoin Reserve. In remarks that garnered the biggest roar from the audience, Trump vowed that he would replace Gensler "on day one."

Bitcoin pushing further into the mainstream could be laying the groundwork for crypto stock Coinbase to join the S & P 500 , according to Oppenheimer. "We believe 1) increasing regulatory clarity, and 2) digital asset becoming mainstream can increase the chance that COIN will be included in S & P 500," he added. Lau has an outperform rating on Coinbase and a price target of $282, which implies a roughly 12% increase from current levels. It's gained about 160% in the past year, outperforming the S & P 500 in that time. Over the pas three years, however, shares are up just 3%, while the S & P 500 has gained 23%.

"For too long our government has violated the cardinal rule that every bitcoiner knows by heart: Never sell your bitcoin," Trump said at this year's Bitcoin Conference in Nashville. Kennedy went further than Trump, promising to establish a 4 million bitcoin strategic reserve to match the country's current stake in gold, some of which is held near the military base at Fort Knox. But Trump's reservation speaks to the complications of promising a bitcoin strategic reserve on par with the gold standard. An executive order would not be enough to bring a U.S. bitcoin reserve into existence. That existing bitcoin stockpile could act as the foundation for the bitcoin strategic reserve, which the U.S. government would build on by regularly buying a certain number of bitcoin.

Improving news on inflation again has raised investors' hopes that the Federal Reserve soon will start to aggressively lower interest rates. Futures market pricing now indicates that while the Fed will remain on hold at next week's policy meeting, it will commence cutting in September and move again in November and December. The market-implied probability for a September cut nudged up to about 90% Friday morning, according to the CME Group's FedWatch Tool that measures fed funds futures pricing. Traders in early 2024 were pricing in at least six cuts this year, but the central bank's rate-setting group has remained on hold for a year. Following the two-day meeting that concludes next Wednesday, the Fed meeting schedule is empty for August, save for the all-important annual conclave in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

“Hydrothermal explosions are violent and dramatic events resulting in the rapid ejection of boiling water, steam, mud, and rock fragments,” according to the US Geological Survey. “Porkchop Geyser, in Norris Geyser Basin, experienced an explosion in 1989, and a small event in Norris Geyser Basin was recorded by monitoring equipment on April 15, 2024. Hydrothermal explosions like that of today are not a sign of impending volcanic eruptions, and they are not caused by magma rising towards the surface.”Large hydrothermal explosions occur on an average of every 700 years, the USGS says. “Although large hydrothermal explosions are rare events on a human time scale, the potential for additional future events of the sort in Yellowstone National Park is not insignificant. Based on the occurrence of large hydrothermal explosion events over the past 16,000 years, an explosion large enough to create a 100-(meter)- (328-ft-) wide crater might be expected every few hundred years,” it added.
