Paramount, the parent company of CBS, Nickelodeon and MTV, told its employees on Tuesday it was beginning a series of long-scheduled job cuts that would winnow its staff by roughly 15 percent in the United States. The company’s three co-chief executives said in an internal note that the cuts — which would be “incredibly hard” — were necessitated by shifts in the entertainment industry. The layoffs, which will affect thousands of employees, are the latest in a series of cutbacks by major media players. Discovery, the parent of CNN, TNT and HBO, has slashed its staff routinely in recent years as it pays down billions in debt. Disney laid off more than 100 employees in its TV division last month.

Over the weekend, Disney and Marvel's "Deadpool & Wolverine" became only the second R-rated film to top $1 billion at the global box office. "Deadpool & Wolverine" is the first R-rated Marvel Cinematic Universe flick, as the previous two Deadpool films were produced and distributed by 20th Century Fox. It is also the second Disney film to top $1 billion at the global box office this year. Box office analysts expect "Deadpool & Wolverine" won't be the last for the company this year, either. The Toy Story franchise has generated $3.2 billion at the global box office, the two Frozen films surpassed $2.7 billion worldwide, the two Incredibles films tallied $1.8 billion globally, and "Zootopia" reached $1 billion worldwide during its run in 2016.

So I've got a not-so modest proposal: Time for Apple to jump in with both feet, and buy HBO — along with the rest of Warner Bros. I know, I know: "Apple should buy X, Y or Z" is a long-running piece of techworld fanfic. But now I think Apple should spend real money and buy WBD. And then, boom: Apple's services business — the part of the company Apple needs to keep growing while its hardware business slows — instantly grows by nearly 50%. New York CNN —Paramount Global, the storied media conglomerate, announced Thursday it will lay off 15% of its US staff and write down $6 billion in value of its cable television networks as it prepares to merge with Skydance Media. Discovery, the parent company of CNN, TNT, HGTV and other cable networks, posted a $9.1 billion write down on its television business. “And this impairment acknowledges this.”The recent turbulence in the media business extends well beyond the traditional television industry, affecting digital news outlets and print publications. As profits in the television business have eroded away, Paramount has been hit particularly hard. Paramount said its streaming service Paramount+ posted a $26 million profit after losing $424 million during the same period last year and said it expects subscriber growth in the second half of the year.

It’s a reflection of how quickly the traditional television business is deteriorating and imperiling companies such as WBD, which rely on linear channels for the bulk of their revenue. The one bright spot in the legacy television business has been live sports programming, which continues to draw high viewership even as cable cancelations mount. To be fair, WBD is not the only once-high flying legacy media behemoth struggling to find its footing in a shifting landscape upended by the Netflixrevolution. Speaking candidly to investors on the company’s earnings call Wednesday, Zaslav acknowledged the dire reality of the television business. “It’s fair to say that even two years ago, market valuations and prevailing conditions for legacy media companies were quite different than they are today,” Zaslav said.

Discovery told investors its TV business was in free fall, and that it would take a $9 billion write-down on those assets. Shares of Disney fell Wednesday as concerns about attendance at its theme parks overshadowed streaming profits and better-than-expected headline results. The combined streaming business — encompassing Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+ — turned in its first-ever quarterly profit slightly ahead of schedule. Then, about two weeks ago, CNBC parent Comcast issued weak April-to-June results for its Universal theme parks business, which weighed on Disney's stock in that session . And, at this point, getting to profitability in the combined streaming business, which adds ESPN+ into the mix, was the biggest focus. Disney's combined streaming business, which consists of Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+, turned a profit for the first time — and it happened a quarter earlier than the company had expected. Executives on Wednesday's earnings call touted the progress of Disney's streaming business toward profitability, a goal for all media companies as they look to chase customers switching to streaming. The combined streaming business posted an operating profit of $47 million compared with a loss of $512 million in the same quarter last year. Meanwhile, in May, Disney highlighted a slightly different metric, noting that Disney+ and Hulu together turned a profit, but when combined with ESPN+, the streaming businesses suffered a loss. "I feel very bullish about the future of this business," Iger said during the call.

“Deadpool & Wolverine” is dominating the charts again after earning $28.3 million on Friday. Rivals are putting the Disney release at a 55% drop though, demonstrating that “Deadpool & Wolverine” has immense appeal beyond Marvel diehards. “Deadpool & Wolverine” looks to blast past that figure in only in its second weekend and there’s no real signs of slowing down after that. Universal also has another top five slot with “Despicable Me 4,” still drawing a crowd in its fifth weekend of release. Total domestic gross surpassed $300 million earlier this week — one of only three titles this year to notch that milestone.

Venu Sports, the sports streaming joint venture between Disney's ESPN, Warner Bros. The high-end pricing — common in direct-to-consumer sports streaming services — was expected in part so it wouldn't shake up any carriage agreements with traditional pay TV distributors. Live sports remain the highest rated TV programming and are the most costly part of the pay TV bundle. Users who sign up for Venu at $42.99 a month will have access to that entry pricing for 12 months, Venu noted Thursday — signaling there could be price increases ahead. The upcoming bundle will be priced at $16.99 a month with ads, and $29.99 a month ad-free.

What would you pay for a streaming service that gave you lots — but not all — of the biggest sports programming on TV? Most crucially, it won't include lots of NFL games, since the package doesn't include CBS, which has the national rights to AFC games on Sundays. Take the NFL out of traditional TV and there's almost nothing left at this point. If you wanted a streaming service that had all of the NFL games on traditional TV, you'd need a service like YouTube TV, which currently costs $73 a month. That's partly because the TV companies that are part of the bundle kind of believe that, and partly because they have a delicate relationship with pay TV distributors like Comcast.
