These vestal get-ups are, in fact, the latest in a long line of subversive pop culture interpretations of the lives (and loves) of nuns. More recently, Bella Hadid walked the Coperni Fall-Winter 2022 runway wearing headgear reminiscent of a nun’s habit. The “Nunsploitation” subgenre saw the transformation of nuns from icons of piety and sacrifice into harbingers of evil and sexual obsession. In lighter fare, “Sister Act 3,” a third movie in the beloved “Sister Act” series of the 1990s starring Whoopi Goldberg is currently in development. “The juxtaposition of the nun’s habit with either blatant sexuality or the cultivation of personal identity and style is shocking and grabs people’s attention,” wrote Dr. Neal.

These robust gains come after a lackluster year for energy stocks. The energy sector fell roughly 5% in 2023, underperforming the broader S&P 500’s double-digit gains as concerns about the global economy hurt energy demand. Some investors say that energy stocks are poised for more gains, given the continued geopolitical turmoil and the US economy’s resilience. Energy stocks often do well when the economy is strong, since there’s more energy demand to fuel goods- and services production. Plug Power shares have slipped 34% this year, SolarEdge Technologies shares have tumbled 25% and Enphase Energy shares have slid 8%.

Four years after a racial reckoning roiled Condé Nast's Bon Appétit, insiders worry that planned cuts could undo a fragile rebuilding effort. Included in that figure are 94 members, or 17%, of Condé Nast Union, which covers around 550 people across a dozen titles, including Vanity Fair, Vogue, and GQ. The Test Kitchen also benefited from a home cooking boom in the pandemic. But by August 2020, 10 of 13 members of the Test Kitchen had left. Members of the BA Test Kitchen in February 2020.

Shellfish Bay on the island’s windward side shelters one of East Africa’s most spectacular beaches, a crescent of white sand framed by 100-meter dunes. Bazaruto Island Resort, the island’s top digs, can arrange scuba diving and snorkeling, sailing on traditional dhow boats, guided 4x4 wildlife safaris, sandboarding on the dunes and other outdoor activities. Lamu’s best beaches are on the island’s windward side, around a 30–40-minute walk via Shela village. — and an ancient stone nilometer for measuring the river’s water level — reflect the island’s importance during pharaonic times.
