These regional powers are betting they can build an expendable air force without the massive costs of aircraft carriers, fighter jets and pilots trained to fly them. Naval experts agree that drone ships represent new possibilities while pointing out that these ships fall far short of the aircraft carriers and amphibious assault ships that top navies sail. Turkey developed the Bayraktar TB3 naval drone for the Anadolu and claims the unmanned Kizilelma fighter jet it is developing could also operate from it. Although far from the might and versatility of flattops, these vessels enhance Turkey and Iran's respective capabilities to project naval power. These drone-carriers also have inherent shortcomings when compared to aircraft carriers and amphibious assault ships in other navies.

Parents, put down your phones (sometimes)
  + stars: | 2024-09-06 | by ( Dr. Katie Hurley | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +7 min
As a therapist who works with teenagers, I routinely hear from clients that their parents consistently criticize kids’ phone use but don’t curb their own use. Parents often tell me the same thing — their kids are glued to their phones and don’t listen when they try to engage them. And when parents feel rejected, they also turn their attention to their phones. I tell parents and kids alike that everyone needs to make changes in their technology habits to restore positive communication and trust. Keeping phones out of the bedroom is a common rule among parents of tweens and teens, yet this rule doesn’t often apply to the parents (guilty as charged).

Here's everything we know about Fyre Festival II — and be warned, it's not a lot. He also said he was working with "one of the biggest production companies" on a deal to produce "Fyre Festival: The Broadway Musical," which is admittedly much more intriguing than the prospect of another Fyre Festival itself.

If GPS goes dark, Mesa Quantum has a backup plan

Cofounded by Mesa Quantum CEO Sristy Agrawal and CTO Wale Lawal in 2023, the company has won a $1.9 million Space Force grant to demonstrate its alternative to GPS technology in military and civilian applications. J2 Ventures cofounder and managing partner, Alex Harstrick, told CNBC his fund backed Mesa Quantum in part because of the founders' extraordinary technical background. Harstrick said his fund hopes that Mesa Quantum will have its first demonstration of mass scale "atomic clocks" (quantum timing sensors) validated by a top-tier semiconductor manufacturing partner" in the next few years. "The U.S. government has established major initiatives to spur innovation in this area and is seeking to purchase a million quantum sensors each year -- if they can simply be mass-produced," she explained. With its grant funding and seed round in place, Agrawal said, Mesa Quantum will look to grow its team in Boulder, especially hiring atomic molecular and optical physicists, engineers and manufacturing experts this year.

Those two events are the kind of thing that, in normal times, are tracked mostly by economists and Wall Street types. For former President Donald Trump and the Republicans, the narrative is simple: Anything bad you’re feeling about inflation or the job market? Harris entered the race trailing Trump on a range of issues, including the economy. If that were the whole story, Trump might have a harder time disparaging Harris’ and President Joe Biden’s economic record. If the data doesn’t behave, however, then jobs — not inflation — may become the key economic narrative that Harris and Trump will start talking about in their stump speeches.

The addition of Gabbard is particularly notable given the tense exchanges she had with the vice president during their 2020 race that left Harris rattled. Trump’s team has been sketching out potential responses on reproductive rights with the expectation Harris will make that a focus during the debate. The Trump campaign has insisted the matter is settled. Thus far, no one is expected to sit in for Harris, just as no one played Biden ahead of the June debate. State and local governments often lease or sell land to builders, including affordable housing developers, particularly in areas with high demand for homes. In a rare overlap of goals between the two campaigns, Harris and Trump have both proposed building housing on federal land. Some Republican lawmakers agree that more federal land should be used for homes. The Biden administration has proposed selling hundreds of acres of land in Nevada controlled by the Bureau of Land Management to local governments to build thousands of new homes. But repurposing federal land for new residential communities in Nevada would likely mean more sprawl, which comes with both environmental and economic concerns.

Donald Trump calls for mass deportations during a visit to the southern border. Harris spoke about her upbringing in San Francisco and her “unlikely journey” to becoming a prosecutor, senator and vice president. Anti-Trump sentiment was also a unifying theme this week, with both progressive and conservative speakers warning of the consequences if former President Donald Trump wins in November. Harris hammered the point in her speech, telling the crowd: "In many ways Donald Trump is an unserious man, but the consequences of putting Donald Trump back in the White House are extremely serious." Trump made the comments in an interview with NBC News during a visit yesterday to the U.S-Mexico border in Arizona.
