In its latest monthly data, Italy's ministry of health noted the effects of extreme temperatures on the country's mortality rate in July compared to the average rate recorded in the same period from 2015 to 2019. The increased mortality rate was particularly evident in southern cities such as Bari, Catania, and Reggio Calabria. On the contrary, the mortality rate in cities in the north of the country, which was less exposed to the heatwave, was lower than expected, down 14% on the past trend.

Economic output fell 0.1% in May from April, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said, after growth of 0.2% in the previous month. All sectors of the economy contracted with the exception of services, which showed no growth. My family of 5 stayed in two family rooms on the Amtrak Auto Train from Florida to Virginia. Our family rooms felt spacious — they were the width of the train with large picture windows on both sides. We didn't have private showers, sinks, or toilets in the rooms, but there were communal bathrooms nearby in our train car. Our $3,100 train trip was more expensive than what we'd have spent on gas, hotels, and food during a road trip from Florida to Virginia. Next time, we'll book one family cabin and an adjacent roomette, a move that would've saved us about $630.

Russians are attempting to flee as Wagner Group forces approach Moscow. Images and videos from Rostov-on-Don showed packed crowds in the city's train station. One post showed the Rostov-on-Don train station jam-packed with travelers attempting to leave after the Wagner Group, a Russian mercenary organization, captured the key Southern port city on Saturday. Earlier Saturday, direct flights leaving Moscow sold out as Russians scrambled to leave when news became clear that Wagner's forces were approaching. Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin launched his so-called "march for justice" on Friday after claiming, without hard evidence, that Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu ordered an air strike on Wagner forces in Ukraine.
