"We're seeing a lot of tech vendors layering AI onto existing technologies," said Christian Beckner, vice president of retail technology and cybersecurity for the National Federation of Retailers, a Washington, D.C.-based trade association. said Dr. Read Hayes, director of the Loss Prevention Research Council, a think tank comprising researchers, retailers, technology companies, manufacturers and law enforcement professionals. And many of the crimes that are being classified as organized retail theft are not taking place in stores, but at various points throughout the supply chain and distribution systems that require their own solutions. It's now harnessing AI to analyze metadata from video images captured by cameras installed outside and inside of retail environments. Some retailers are using camera systems featuring facial recognition software to help identify criminals, despite legal and privacy concerns.

CNN —The Biden administration on Friday proposed modest increases to fuel efficiency standards for the vehicles most Americans drive. The proposal fits alongside the administration’s push for increasing the share of electric vehicles on the roads. A nearly 700-page document outlined the potential options, including the administration’s proposal for increasing car fuel efficiency standards annually by 2% for cars and 4% for light trucks. The Environmental Protection Agency, which calculates the fuel economy estimates shown on vehicle window stickers, uses different tests that result in more realistic estimates. Soon after taking office, the Trump administration re-wrote the more stringent Obama administration’s proposal.

Midcap firms Bellway (BWY.L) and Crest Nicholson (CRST.L) have also pointed to high mortgage rates hampering demand from first-time buyers. Even a potential revival of the government's 'Help to Buy' scheme, which offered incentives to first-time buyers, will not be enough to improve affordability, analysts have said. Persimmon (PSN.L), one of Britain's biggest homebuilders heavily exposed to first-time buyers compared to its FTSE 100 peers, has offered new customers a "10 months mortgage free" deal. Still, the housing sector faces an uncertain path to recovery, given the ultra-elevated mortgage rate levels. Meanwhile, investors will look out for updates on demand when a couple of high-profile homebuilders report half-year results next month.

LOS ANGELES, July 13 (Reuters) - Hollywood actors will go on strike at midnight on Thursday after talks with studios broke down, joining film and television writers who have been on picket lines since May and deepening the disruption of scores of shows and movies. The actors' union announced at a Thursday press conference that the strike will begin at midnight after its national board unanimously authorized the walkout. Fran Drescher, former star of "The Nanny" TV show and the president of SAG-AFTRA, called the studios' responses to actors' concerns "insulting and disrespectful." But the loss of actors, who will also not promote their films or TV shows while on strike, will put more pressure on media companies to find a resolution. The economic damage is expected to spread after actors join the picket lines on Friday.

Why It Matters: A second strike could shut Hollywood down completely. Hollywood is already 80 percent shut down since the writers went on strike on May 2. While some television shows and movies continued filming, the writers were surprisingly effective in shutting down shows in production. During the last writers’ strike 15 years ago, the Los Angeles economy lost an estimated $2.1 billion. The effects of a dual strike would also soon be coming to your television, with network shows going into reruns and a likely proliferation of reality television.

Why credit card late fees may drop to $8

How things might changeIf no substantive changes are made to the proposal, here is how late fees would change, relative to current rules. Today, they may charge you automatically up to $41 ($30 for your first late payment but $41 for subsequent ones). But since the CFPB hasn’t seen today’s late fees exceed $41, it is unlikely you would see late fees as high as those examples suggest, Shearer noted. Among them, they assert that the CFPB’s estimates don’t account for the costs associated with uncollected late fees or the forgiveness of late fees by financial institutions. As a result, the cost of credit will increase, credit availability will drop, and rewards and other credit card features will decline and some may disappear,” the letter stated.

Wolfgang Kaehler | Lightrocket | Getty ImagesIndia is poised to become the world's second-largest economy by 2075, leapfrogging not just Japan and Germany, but the U.S. too, says Goldman Sachs. "Over the next two decades, the dependency ratio of India will be one of the lowest among regional economies," said Goldman Sachs Research's India economist, Santanu Sengupta. Sengupta added that the key to drawing out the potential of India's rapidly growing population is to boost the participation of its labor force. The Achilles heel to the bank's projection is the labor force participation rate — and whether it increases at the rate which Goldman projects. "The labor force participation rate in India has declined over the last 15 years," the report noted, underlining that women's participation rate in the labor force is "significantly lower" than men's.

In an open letter sent to EU lawmakers Friday, C-suite executives from companies including Siemens (SIEGY), Carrefour (CRERF), Renault (RNLSY) and Airbus (EADSF) raised “serious concerns” about the EU AI Act, the world’s first comprehensive AI rules. “Such regulation could lead to highly innovative companies moving their activities abroad” and investors withdrawing their capital from European AI, the group wrote. Race to regulateTech experts have increasingly called for greater regulation of AI as it becomes more widely used. The Inform Consumers Act, a new law that aims to curb organized retail theft and the sale of counterfeit and harmful products on online platforms, takes effect Tuesday as more retailers blame theft as a reason for lower profits. They claim organized crime groups steal merchandise from stores and then resell it on online marketplaces, typically at a lower amount than the sticker price. Many experts say organized retail theft has grown alongside the rise of online shopping, which boomed during the Covid pandemic and became the primary way consumers shopped. In the first quarter of 2023, e-commerce in the U.S. accounted for 15.1% of total retail sales, and reached $272.6 billion, a 7.8% jump from the year-ago period. "Under INFORM, online marketplaces can no longer turn a blind eye to criminal actors using their platforms to sell stolen and counterfeit goods.

Noise deterrents are being developed to scare orcas away from boats, a Portuguese trade association said. The association said sailors in the area are "afraid" to take their boats into Portuguese waters. Alfredo López of the Grupo de trabajo Orca Atlántica, which is collaborating with the Portuguese government, told Insider the work is in the very early stages. Noise deterrents typically work by emitting pulses of high-frequency sound to scare away sea creatures from an area. While types of acoustic deterrents exist, none are specifically designed to be used for orcas and sailboats, he said.

The French government is using the list seen by Reuters, produced by a research group, as a reference for the project, according to three sources with knowledge of the matter. Some consumer goods makers have said recently that costs are starting to ease, leading lawmakers and regulators to accuse companies of keeping prices high unnecessarily. Investors have in recent months warned that consumer goods companies should start easing price increases as supply chain costs decline, worried that further hikes could hit market share and margin growth.

Why Some Americans Buy Guns
  + stars: | 2023-06-23 | by ( Roni Caryn Rabin | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: 1 min
In 2020, while many communities were under Covid lockdowns, protesters were flooding the streets and economic uncertainty and social isolation were deepening, Americans went on a shopping spree. Some 22 million guns were sold that year, 64 percent more than in 2019. The death count from guns, including suicides, rose to 45,222 in 2020 from 39,702 in 2019. The number of lives lost to guns rose again in 2021, to 48,830. After quashing research into gun violence for 25 years, Congress began funneling millions of dollars to federal agencies in 2021 to gather data.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency plans to finalize biofuel blending volumes at 20.94 billion gallons in 2023, 21.54 billion gallons in 2024 and 22.33 billion gallons in 2025, the sources said. That compares with the initial proposal announced in December of 20.82 billion in 2023, 21.87 billion in 2024, and 22.68 billion in 2025. But the finalized volumes include just 15 billion gallons of conventional biofuels like corn-based ethanol in all three years, plus a 250 million-gallon supplemental amount for 2023, the sources said. Ethanol producers and corn farmers like the mandates because they provide a market for their products, while the oil industry finds the requirements too pricey.
