A Trip Into Tornado Alley With America’s Most Obsessive Storm ChaserOn a clear morning in late May, Reed Timmer began the day at home in Lexington, Okla., studying the latest update from the National Weather Service’s storm-prediction center. A month into his freshman year, he went storm chasing, and saw his first tornado. He went on to begin his Ph.D. studies, but the allure of storm chasing waylaid his academic career. Timmer insists that chasing tornadoes is safe, though others’ experience suggests a different conclusion. In 2013, while he was pursuing the El Reno tornado in Oklahoma, four other chasers died in the storm.

It sounds simple enough — rent comes in and, ideally, it's greater than the rental expenses, resulting in positive cash flow — but real estate investors agree that rental income shouldn't be categorized as passive. "You hear that real estate investing is passive, and that's certainly not been my experience," New England-based investor Tess Waresmith, who owns five units, told Business Insider. But when I'm not actively buying, I don't spend much time on real estate." Real estate syndicationWith real estate syndication deals, a group of investors pool together their capital to purchase a single property managed by the syndicator. He recommends starting with an online search for "real estate syndicates" or "commercial real estate syndicates" if you're specifically interested in commercial deals.

Maskot | Maskot | Getty ImagesBuying a new electric vehicle isn't the only way consumers can access a $7,500 federal EV tax credit. Perhaps the best known of them — the "new clean vehicle" tax credit — is a $7,500 tax break for consumers who buy a new EV. But many auto dealers are also passing along a $7,500 tax break to lessees, via a different (and, experts say, lesser-known) mechanism called the "qualified commercial clean vehicles" tax credit. This EV tax credit "leasing loophole" has likely been a key driver of increased leasing uptake in 2024, Barclays auto analysts said in an equity research note published in June. The $7,500 tax credit enables dealers to charge low monthly payments for leases, thereby helping "stoke demand" for EVs, Barclays wrote.

New York CNN —There’s a popular idea in political discourse known as the horseshoe theory. The idea is that if you map ideologies on a horseshoe-shaped spectrum, the far right and the far left are actually more closely aligned than the centrists on either side. Missouri Republican Sen. Josh Hawley is another young buck (44 is the new 24 in Congress) who’s all-in on Trump and positioning himself as an advocate for workers. “Pro-worker is raising the minimum wage, ensuring people get overtime, supporting paid sick and family leave,” Terri Gerstein, the Director of the NYU Wagner Labor Initiative, told CNN. “Playacting as working class by dressing up in jeans and acting aggrieved doesn’t do anything for real working people who are struggling.”

Read previewSen. JD Vance, now a vice-presidential nominee, has some strong opinions on how America can better support families. Vance, the author of "Hillbilly Elegy" and a former venture capitalist, has been outspoken about his views on family and birth rates. "We should worry that in America, family formation, our birth rates, a ton of indicators of family health have collapsed," Vance said in 2021 remarks. But Vance's actions as a senator suggest some support for Democratic policies, such as an expansion of the child tax credit. Vance expressed support for the credit, saying at the time that "we're the party of families," Punchbowl News reported.

Experts told Business Insider the Ukraine war has underscored how some elements of modern air combat are radically changing. And in fights like Desert Storm and the Iraq War, the West established air superiority by taking out its opponent's air defenses. The Russian air force can't meet Western air forces air to air in a major attack without being "shot to pieces," Bronk said. "Nobody really wants an air war with Russia," said John Baum, a Mitchell Institute expert and retired US Air Force lieutenant colonel. Skydance, led by aspiring media mogul David Ellison, publicly unveiled its plan to invest billions into the so-called "New Paramount." Those lines likely have employees in Paramount's streaming division shaking in their shoes. It certainly sounds like Skydance is keen on trimming spending on the service or shacking it up with another streaming service like Warner Bros. Paramount's streamer had the highest share of subscriptions added in the first quarter in the US, according to data from Antenna.
