Americans are fretting over the job market
  + stars: | 2024-09-24 | by ( Bryan Mena | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +2 min
Washington CNN —America’s slowing job market is taking a toll on people’s moods. The Conference Board’s latest consumer survey showed that Americans became much more pessimistic about the US economy’s current health and the future of the job market. “September’s decline was the largest since August 2021 and all five components of the Index deteriorated.”The US job market is in decent shape, but it is clearly running at a much slower pace these days than it has in recent years. Peterson said the weaker-than-expected survey results “reflected consumers’ concerns about the labor market and reactions to fewer hours, slower payroll increases, fewer job openings — even if the labor market remains quite healthy, with low unemployment, few layoffs and elevated wages.”The job market’s fate is unclear. Employers might be holding back on hiring for two good reasons: Uncertainty over the upcoming US presidential election and the fate of interest rates, CNN previously reported.

Goldman SachsWage growth is down from 6% in August 2022 to 3.9%, according to Goldman Sachs. Still, Goldman Sachs thinks the US unemployment rate will drift down to 4% in 2025, which would be a healthy figure. An influx of immigrants may have affected this trend, Goldman Sachs economists say. Goldman SachsLabor costs rose 7% in 2023 for S&P 500 companies and 5% for firms in the Russell 2000, Goldman found. Goldman Sachs shared a sector-neutral list of 50 stocks in the S&P 500 that have high labor costs, which should disproportionately benefit as wage inflation slows as raises become rarer.

MEXICO CITY (AP) — California avocado growers are fuming this week about a U.S. decision to hand over pest inspections of Mexican orchards to the Mexican government. Because the United States also grows avocados, U.S. inspectors observe orchards and packing houses in Mexico to ensure exported avocados don’t carry pests that could hurt U.S. crops. The letter added, "We are looking for specifics as to why you have concluded that substituting APHIS inspectors with Mexican government inspectors is in our best interest." Only the states of Michoacan and Jalisco are certified to export avocados to the United States. Some packers in Mexico buy avocados from other, non-certified states, and try to pass them off as being from Michoacan.

Jamie Dimon, Chairman and Chief Executive officer (CEO) of JPMorgan Chase & Co. (JPM) speaks to the Economic Club of New York in Manhattan in New York City, U.S., April 23, 2024. During his visit to India, Dimon said in an exclusive interview with CNBC-TV18 released Tuesday: "My caution is all geopolitics, which may determine the state of the economy." "Geopolitics is getting worse, they are not getting better. In today's big story, why you should care about a potential Intel-Qualcomm deal , even if it might not work. Getting all that varied experience has proved particularly beneficial for TSMC in the age of cutting-edge mobile and AI chips. The US needs Intel to keep (and get better at) manufacturing chips. The problem with that is that this manufacturing business would have almost no customers, and would fall even further behind TSMC. Experts seem incredibly skeptical about a Qualcomm deal going through.

“We are very committed to making sure that Americans have access at an affordable price point for our medicines,” Jorgensen replied. Similarly, Wegovy’s list price is $1,349 in the US, but it costs $186 in Denmark, $140 in Germany and $92 in the United Kingdom, he said. Tuesday’s hearing boiled down to a familiar argument over who is responsible for the US’s higher prices: drug companies that set starting – or “list” – prices or pharmacy benefit managers, the middlemen that negotiate discounts on those list prices in exchange for favorable insurance coverage and access. Jorgensen said Novo Nordisk pays back about 75% of its medicine sales in rebates, discounts and fees, so the net price it receives is far lower than the list price. “The broad totality is that less patients have access to our medicines when we lowered the price,” Jorgensen told Sen. Maggie Hassan, D-New Hampshire, after she pressed him to reduce list prices.

At risk of collapsing before the year is out, the new lineup will have to do a delicate dance with the far right in order to survive. By pandering to the right, Macron hopes his government can safeguard his legacy after the left pledged to repeal some of his key policies, such as controversial pension reforms. New faces include veteran conservative Bruno Retailleau at the interior ministry whose hardline stance on immigration appeals to the far right. The president – a former left-wing minister – is now beholden to the support of the far right. Yet in this summer’s snap election, they are the very group Macron tried to keep out of government through his party’s “cordon sanitaire” voting alliance with France’s left.

The Australian dollar hovered close to its highest level of the year on Tuesday, with the central bank set to hold policy steady later and traders focused on any hints of potential near-term easing. The yen has retreated amid waning bets for aggressive tightening by the BOJ, particularly after governor Ueda struck a cautious tone of Friday, saying the central bank would spend some time monitoring global growth risks. The truth about promotions
  + stars: | 2024-09-24 | by ( Aki Ito | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +9 min
That was obviously a bad idea, and since then, we've spent a century and a half honing the art and science of promotions. To study promotions, the researchers conducted a series of clever experiments. But in other groups, managers were selected based on their own preferences. What did much better at predicting good managers was intelligence, as measured by a common IQ test. "Don't think, well, they like to talk, and therefore they're going to be a good manager."

September is a historically weak month for stocks, but the first U.S. Federal Reserve rate cut in four years meant that markets have mostly bucked the trend so far. The S & P 500 has risen around 1% month-to-date, and jumped about 8% since the end of June when stocks went through much volatility. But risks such as the U.S. election, inflation and geopolitical conditions raise the question of what the path ahead will be like for stocks. "In my view, the banking sector could win ... as should solid growth stocks – at reasonable valuations – in the healthcare and software sectors," he added. Valuations in the U.S. market look "less demanding" — if you exclude Big Tech, mega-growth stocks, which are dragging up the overall price-to-earnings multiple of the S & P 500, Webber added.

The antitrust suit is one of several major actions taken by the Justice Department recently. It also comes just three years after the Justice Department sued to block Visa from merging with financial technology startup Plaid. According to the new complaint against Visa, which was filed in federal court in New York, more than 60% of debit transactions in the country take place on Visa’s debit network. CNN —Nearly 200 chemicals connected to breast cancer are used in the making of food packaging and plastic tableware, and dozens of those carcinogens can migrate into the human body, a new study found. Of the recently detected chemicals in food packaging, 40 are already classified as hazardous by regulatory agencies around the world, according to the study. Rates of early-onset breast cancer in women under 50 are increasing, and experts said the trend cannot be explained by genetics alone. A January 2024 update to that list found 921 possibly carcinogenic chemicals, including 642 that may stimulate estrogen or progesterone production, another known risk factor for breast cancer. Self-compassionate touch, which can be practiced anywhere, can include stroking the upper arms like a hug. Milko/E+/Getty ImagesThe study showed a single 20-second session of self-compassionate touch significantly reduced stress, increased kindness to the participant and improved mental well-being. However, Hafeez noted that while self-compassionate touch showed similar mental health benefits to long-term therapy, it is not a complete substitute for it — especially among those with diagnosed mental health conditions. Instead, she advised people to think of self-compassionate touch as an added tool for their mental health toolbox. The study results showed the more people make self-compassionate touch a habit, the greater the mental health benefits.
