  + stars: | 2023-05-08 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
NEW DELHI, May 8 (Reuters) - Rajasthan Royals opener Jos Buttler roared back to form but Abdul Samad's last-over heroics ensured Sunrisers Hyderabad had the last laugh in Sunday night's dramatic Indian Premier League (IPL) contest. England limited-overs captain Buttler started the season well but went into the match without a fifty in his previous six knocks that included a couple of ducks. But with Hyderabad needing 41 runs off the last two overs, Glenn Phillips, who made 25 off just seven balls, turned the match on its head. Samad smacked the final delivery over the bowler's head for a flat six to secure Hyderabad's fourth win in 10 matches. Rajasthan captain Samson defended picking Sandeep to bowl the final over.

KARACHI, Pakistan, May 6 (Reuters) - Bowler Matt Henry is hopeful New Zealand can avoid a series whitewash in Pakistan by producing an improved display in Sunday's fifth and final one-day international against the world number one side. The team under Tom Latham managed to draw the preceding T20 series 2-2 but Pakistan have taken an unassailable 4-0 lead in the one-day series. "It's a shame we really haven't had the success that we wanted to ... " Henry told reporters after the loss. Henry had no hesitations admitting Pakistan had outplayed his team in home conditions. "Obviously it's frustrating to be four-nil but sometimes you've got to give kudos to the way that Pakistan have been playing their cricket.

May 5 (Reuters) - Lucknow Super Giants skipper KL Rahul has been ruled out of the rest of the Indian Premier League (IPL) season and India's World Test Championship (WTC) final against Australia after he said on Friday he would undergo surgery on his thigh. He could not open Lucknow's innings in the run-chase but came out to bat at number 11. "After careful consideration and consultation with the medical team, it's been concluded that I'll be undergoing a surgery on my thigh shortly," Rahul wrote on Instagram. Lucknow are second in the IPL standings with 11 points, one behind leaders Gujarat Titans who have a game in hand. The surgery will also rule Rahul out of the WTC final against Australia at the Oval from June 7-11.
Salah on verge of becoming top-scoring Egyptian of all time

Egypt's 30-year-old skipper Salah is Liverpool's record Premier League scorer with 136 goals. Salah's other club goals came at AS Roma (34), Fiorentina (9), Chelsea (2), Basel (20) plus 12 for his childhood club Al-Mokawloon Al-Arab. Liverpool are fifth in the Premier League standings on 59 points, four behind fourth-placed Manchester United who have a game in hand in the race for Champions league places.
Wallabies will back whoever Jones picks as skipper - Slipper
  + stars: | 2023-05-03 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
SYDNEY, May 3 (Reuters) - James Slipper, Australia's incumbent test skipper, says the Wallabies will back whoever coach Eddie Jones chooses as captain for the Rugby Championship and World Cup. Hooper has since returned to the game and the Wallabies squad but Jones has yet to announce who will lead the side when the test season starts in July, only suggesting that he might pick more than one. "Eddie made it clear he's just going to pick the right man for the job so whoever that is, mate, we'll just bide behind," Slipper told reporters in Canberra on Wednesday. Jones has not always followed the expected path with his captains, most notably when he named New Zealand-born hooker Dylan Hartley as England skipper in 2016. "I feel I have got a couple of good years left in me, so we'll see what happens."
Kohli, Gambhir docked full match fees over IPL altercation

NEW DELHI, May 2 (Reuters) - Former India team mates Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir were docked their full match fees following their altercation in Monday's Indian Premier League (IPL) match in Lucknow, organisers said. When the players were shaking hands Kohli appeared to have a blunt exchange with Lucknow bowler Naveen-ul-Haq and was then confronted by Gambhir. Kohli, 34, initially looked like he was trying to reason with Gambhir but the conversation became heated and the pair, who previously clashed in a 2013 IPL match, had to be separated by team mates. Gambhir, 41, was fined 100% of his match fee for breaching the tournament's code of conduct, organisers said in a statement, with Kohli handed a similar fine. Lucknow skipper KL Rahul hurt his hip while fielding and could not open the innings.
In the test mission, SpaceX’s Starship launched toward space atop a Super Heavy rocket booster. That could be the determining factor in how long it takes the company to get a new Starship on the launch pad. Such investigations are routine and have taken place after previous — but smaller-scale — Starship test launches in South Texas. Joe Skipper/ReutersSpaceX is not permitted to make another launch attempt of a Starship vehicle until that review is complete. CNN —Kirsten Neuschäfer has become the first woman to win the Golden Globe Race. Entrants race solo, non-stop, and in boats that are reminiscent of the ‘Golden Age’ of solo sailing – the yachts have to be designed before 1988 and are without electronic instruments or autopilots. The race is based on the 1968-69 Sunday Times Golden Globe Race which saw Sir Robin Knox-Johnston become the first person to circumnavigate the globe, sailing solo on his boat Suhaili without stopping. By the time the South African Neuschäfer crossed the line Thursday, only two other sailors were on course to complete the race without stopping. Neuschäfer became the first women to ever win the race.
On April 28, 1983, USS Enterprise arrived in San Francisco after an eight-month deployment. Imagine, then, the frustration felt by sailors and family members alike when a ship ran aground right before it docked. USS Enterprise sails under the Golden Gate Bridge as it returns from a deployment in April 1983. 4,500 sailors and 3,000 family members could now just see each other, but were still far from being reunited. "Our vessel is the Starship Enterprise and this is the USS Enterprise," he later said, "We've got a new drink—Enterprise on the Rocks."

REUTERS/Joe SkipperOTTAWA, April 25 (Reuters) - NASA Administrator Bill Nelson on Tuesday condemned Russian President Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine, but said in Ottawa that he expected Russians and Americans to work together on the International Space Station (ISS) until it is decommissioned. American-Russian space cooperation was put in doubt after the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Yuri Borisov, the director-general of Russia's space agency Roscosmos, surprised NASA by announcing in July 2022 that Moscow intended to withdraw from the space station partnership "after 2024." And I expect that to continue all the way through the end of the decade, when they we will then de-orbit the space station." The space station was born in part from a foreign policy initiative to improve American-Russian relations following the collapse of the Soviet Union and the Cold War hostility that spurred the original U.S.-Soviet space race.

Rippers roll in Adelaide as LIV lands Down Under

SYDNEY, April 20 (Reuters) - After falling short in their bid to gatecrash the Masters, the stars of LIV Golf break fresh ground in Adelaide this weekend when they take the rebel tour to Australia for the first time. The fourth of the 14 events on the schedule in the second season of LIV Golf was all but guaranteed a warm reception Down Under, despite concerns in some quarters that its Saudi backers are engaged in "sportswashing". "Obviously we're going there to win," said the 29-year-old world number six, who defected to LIV for a reported $140 million after his British Open triumph last year. Former world number one and twice major champion Martin Kaymer will make his return after six months on the sidelines recovering from a wrist injury as captain of "Cleeks". Having been pointedly excluded from Augusta, LIV Golf Commissioner Greg Norman has been ubiquitous in the media in his homeland this week promoting his product.
NASA chief Bill Nelson tweeted: "Congrats to @SpaceX on Starship’s first integrated flight test! Looking forward to all that SpaceX learns, to the next flight test — and beyond." Musk, the founder, chief executive and chief engineer of SpaceX, said on Twitter that the next Starship test launch would be "in a few months." "Congrats @SpaceX team on an exciting test launch of Starship! Learned a lot for next test launch in a few months," he tweeted.
REUTERS/Go NakamuraBOCA CHICA, Texas, April 20 (Reuters) - Elon Musk's SpaceX aimed on Thursday to launch the company's next-generation Starship spacecraft atop its powerful Super Heavy rocket for the first time, on a highly anticipated but brief uncrewed test flight from the Gulf Coast of Texas. A successful flight would instantly rank the Starship system as the most powerful launch vehicle on Earth. In February, SpaceX conducted a test-firing of the Super Heavy, igniting 31 of its 33 engines for roughly 10 seconds with the rocket bolted in place vertically atop a platform. The Federal Aviation Administration last Friday granted a license for the first test flight of the fully stacked rocket system, clearing a final regulatory hurdle for the long-awaited launch. After separating from the Starship, the Super Heavy booster is expected to execute the beginnings of a controlled return flight before plunging into the Gulf.

Still even a textbook test flight would have by design ended with crash landings of both portions of the spacecraft at sea.
REUTERS/Joe SkipperLOS ANGELES, April 20 (Reuters) - The spectacular explosion of SpaceX's new Starship rocket minutes after it soared off its launch pad on a first flight test is the latest vivid illustration of a "successful failure" business formula that serves Elon Musk's company well, experts said on Thursday. PRACTICE MAKES PERFECTAt least two experts in aerospace engineering and planetary science who spoke with Reuters agreed that the test flight delivered benefits. "This is a classical SpaceX successful failure," said Garrett Reisman, an astronautical engineering professor at the University of Southern California who is a former NASA astronaut and is also a senior adviser to SpaceX. Reisman called the Starship test flight a hallmark of a SpaceX strategy that sets Musk's company apart from traditional aerospace companies and even NASA by "this embracing of failure when the consequences of failure are low." She said the risks of a single flight test were small in comparison to the ambitious gains at stake.
For Crémer, the fastest solo woman to complete the around-the-world Vendée Globe race, assuming such a role was never part of the plan. “I had made that promise to myself during the previous Vendée Globe that I wanted to be back.”Return to sailingA lifeline was quick to arrive. On Thursday, Thomson announced that Crémer would skipper the team in its bid to qualify for next year’s Vendée Globe. REUTERS/Gene BlevinsBOCA CHICA, Texas, April 17 (Reuters) - Elon Musk's SpaceX made final preparations early on Monday to launch its powerful new Starship rocket system to space for the first time, on a brief but highly anticipated uncrewed test flight from the Gulf Coast of Texas. But neither stage will be recovered for the expendable first test flight to space, expected to last no more than 90 minutes. The Federal Aviation Administration just last Friday granted a license for what would be the first test flight of the fully stacked rocket system, clearing a final regulatory hurdle for the long-awaited launch. As designed, the Starship rocket is nearly two times more powerful than NASA's own Space Launch System (SLS), which made its debut uncrewed flight to orbit in November, sending a NASA cruise vessel called Orion on a 10-day voyage around the moon and back. BOCA CHICA, Texas, April 17 (Reuters) - Elon Musk's SpaceX called off the highly anticipated debut launch of its newly-combined Starship cruise vessel and Super Heavy rocket in the final minutes of countdown due to a frozen valve, delaying the uncrewed test flight for at least two days. But the California-based space company announced in a live webcast that it was scrubbing the planned 90-minute flight into space for a minimum of 48 hours, citing a frozen pressurization valve in the lower-stage rocket booster. A successful debut flight would also instantly rank the Starship system as the most powerful launch vehicle on Earth. But neither stage would be recovered for the expendable first test flight to space. After separating from the Starship, the Super Heavy booster is expected to execute the beginnings of a controlled return flight before plunging into the Gulf of Mexico.

Powell’s knock came off only 18 balls as the West Indies reached their target of 132 with three balls to spare to go 1-0 up in the three-match series. The game was reduced to 11 overs each with South Africa scoring 131-8 and then the tourists replying with 132-7. After a two-hour delay, Powell put South Africa into bat in damp conditions and got immediate returns as key batsmen Quinton de Kock and Rilee Rossouw departed cheaply. West Indies went on the attack from the start of their innings, scoring 17 runs off their opening four balls before South Africa snagged Kyle Mayers with the next delivery.
