Homeless people and their advocates say the sweeps are cruel and a waste of taxpayer money. The AP submitted data requests to 30 U.S. cities regarding encampment sweeps and received at least partial responses from about half. “Unfortunately, it’s becoming a way of life, and that is 100% incorrect.”For homeless people, sweeps can be traumatizing. But never an end solution.”There are many reasons why someone might reject shelter, say homeless people and their advocates. We’re walking around saying, ‘What do you need?’”In Portland, the encampment dismantled in July was cleared again, in September and November.

AdvertisementFor those not in the aviation industry, it might be easy to assume the life of a flight attendant is glamorous with constant travel. For that reason, flight attendants on reserve sometimes resort to staying in shared housing, commonly known as a "crash pad." @flightattendantbaelee/TikTokDepending on the city, crash pads are houses or apartments that are usually owned by flight attendants, pilots, or former airline crew. What's more, flight attendants have two options to choose from within the crash pad: a "hot bed" or "cold bed." Even with New York’s complicated history as a port for new arrivals, the photographs this summer of more than a hundred migrants sleeping shoulder to shoulder on the sidewalk outside the once-elegant Roosevelt Hotel in Midtown Manhattan were shocking. So were scenes of young migrants idling on sidewalks, stoops and park benches, desperate to work but legally prohibited from doing so. For those of us who were once part of such a moment, the scenes stirred up memories and reflections on how different some things were now for new arrivals and how much they were the same. I, too, was once part of a migrant influx. In the years after the end of World War II, New York City absorbed a similar wave of immigrants — a large majority of the 140,000 Jewish Holocaust survivors who came to America between 1946 and 1953 — and it did so comparatively smoothly and uneventfully.

CNN —A Southern California man accused of shooting and killing a homeless man he woke up for blocking a sidewalk captured the shooting on video, according to the Orange County district attorney. The sleeping man awoke and began yelling at Elliot to get away from him, the release said. Elliott, who was charged with felony voluntary manslaughter and felony enhancement of personal use of a firearm, is accused of grabbing a handgun from his pushcart, according to the release. Authorities said in the release that a video taken by Elliot shows Avalos standing up and throwing a shoe at Elliot, who then ducks to avoid the shoe. Seconds later, according to the release, the video shows Elliot shooting Avalos three times.

While traffic deaths are way up across the country, Hoboken, New Jersey, has managed to go years without one. Between 2019 and 2022, traffic fatalities jumped 18%, with pedestrian deaths hitting a 40-year high in 2021, according to data from the Governors Highway Safety Association. In Hoboken, local leaders have invested in a concerted effort to cut road deaths — and it's working. The city hasn't had a single traffic death since January 2017, and traffic injuries have declined about 40% in that period, Bloomberg reported. The project has an ambitious goal of eliminating all traffic deaths and injuries n the city by 2030.

All along Central Park West on Thursday, throngs of people gathered for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and packed street corners or sat on folding chairs set up since dawn. They wedged themselves on slivers of sidewalk, and some placed their toddlers atop food carts for a better view. “You don’t realize how slow the cadence is in real life,” she said as she left the parade route. For nearly three hours, Ms. Burgess added, she had peered up at balloons of animated characters like Bluey, Goku and Monkey D. Luffy. She had watched the event only on television, and as a TV production coordinator, she realized how she preferred seeing the spectacle.

Be warned: Flights are getting bumpier
  + stars: | 2023-11-22 | by ( Michelle Mastro | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +9 min
Air turbulence is becoming more common and more intense. As the jet stream buckles a bit because it's not as strong as it was in the past, now you have all this energy associated with the jet stream up 30,000 feet or so. But changes to the atmosphere mean these corridors are getting bumpier, so avoiding them could result in smoother flights. But while we can get better at avoiding air turbulence, we won't be able to avoid it altogether. That's why some companies are going back to the drawing board to design airplanes that can better adjust to turbulent air.

The jury took around six hours to convict Nathaniel Veltman, who attacked the family in the Ontario town of London. REUTERS/Mike Blake/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsNov 16 (Reuters) - Police arrested a man in Ventura County, California, on Thursday on suspicion of manslaughter for the death of a Jewish man who fell to the ground during an altercation at pro-Israel and pro-Palestinian street demonstrations earlier this month. The county district attorney's office said they had received the sheriff's investigation into Kessler's death and expected to announce a charging decision later on Thursday. Witnesses had provided conflicting accounts about who was the aggressor in the incident, the sheriff said last week. The dual protests in Thousand Oaks drew about 100 people from each side, Fryhoff said, and no other incidents were reported.

At least a few of the incidents had overlapping suspect descriptions: a white man in his 40s or 50s, at least 6 feet tall and weighing between 220 and 300 pounds. In the package that the district attorney sent to Hathaway, there was a grainy surveillance video of one of the previous attacks, which showed a heavyset white man approaching a man sleeping on the sidewalk, spraying him with a large canister and walking quickly away as the man writhed in pain. What kind of person would spray homeless people with bear mace? The answer, Hathaway would later tell the court, was clear: A person who says: “I’m a vigilante justice. I’m above and beyond the law.’”Until 2020, homelessness had not been a primary concern for Marina residents.

Editor’s Note: Kara Alaimo, an associate professor of communication at Fairleigh Dickinson University, writes about issues affecting women and social media. Now, a new study suggests the reason some kids don’t sleep well is because they’re genetically predisposed to insomnia — not because their moms can’t get sleep training right. There’s a bigger lesson here that goes far beyond what parents should be taught about getting kids to sleep. The study released this week reminds us that when a kid struggles, it’s often not their parent’s fault. Not having to deal with these kinds of messages of failure would at least give parents one less thing to lose sleep over.

After traveling around Israel and the West Bank, I now understand why so much has changed. It is crystal clear to me that Israel is in real danger — more danger than at any time since its War of Independence in 1948. Last Saturday night, a retired Israeli Army commander stopped by my hotel in Tel Aviv to share his perspective on the war. Consider this context: “According to Israel’s official Central Bureau of Statistics, at the end of 2021, 9.449 million people live in Israel (including Israelis in West Bank settlements), the Times of Israel reported last year. Let me not mince words, because the hour is dark and Israel, as I said, is in real danger.

Two years later, Congress put such a law in place, prohibiting people facing domestic violence restraining orders from having guns. Gun rights organizations are supporting Zackey Rahimi, the Texas man whose challenge to the law led to the Supreme Court case. A gun, though, is more than just a potential source of violence, Glenn said, recalling how her husband threatened her and her then-teenage son, David, repeatedly. Rahimi’s case reached the Supreme Court after prosecutors appealed a ruling that threw out his conviction for possessing guns while subject to a restraining order. The court's decision in the Rahimi case could have widespread ripple effects, including in the high-profile prosecution of Hunter Biden.

EXCESSIVE VOLUME has been on-trend in menswear for a while, but the expansion has generally been outward, not down. Now, designers are elongating everything from knits to shirts, but the main event is sidewalk-skimming coats. Extra-long styles dominated the fall shows in January, casting heavy shadows on runways from Saint Laurent to Loewe. With fall here, I wanted to see if this elongated elegance translated to the real world. Would the coats’ hems gather grime on a subway platform or catch in a taxi’s door?

They represent the moral and philosophical foundations for the concrete constitutional rules of culture war that directly apply on campus. One of the most powerful and compelling arguments for free speech in American history was born out of mob suppression. In 1860, Frederick Douglass wrote his “Plea for Free Speech in Boston” after a violent mob shut down an antislavery event. Every college and university — public or private — that receives federal funds has an affirmative duty to protect students’ civil rights. In the recent past, schools have sometimes been too enthusiastic about stopping harassment, defining the term so broadly that university anti-harassment policies actually violate students’ free speech rights.

New York City officials have found a new effective way to kill rats. The strategy involves pumping carbon monoxide directly into the rat burrows that are found in sidewalk tree beds. Deodato uses the carbon monoxide method to suffocate the rats, with the help of a machine called BurrowRX, which costs about $3,000. Gothamist reported Menin has since set aside $30,000 to fund the carbon monoxide technique. In addition to the carbon monoxide method, the city has also tried spring traps, poisons, and rat birth control.

There are a slew of users and uses that compete for curb space. The solution, some advocates say, is removing free parking and charging for spots based on demand. Free parkingThe root of the chaos at the curb stems from free on-street parking, critics say. Cities “squander curbs for free parking for cars because drivers are the people who show up at public meetings,” Shoup said. Smart loading zonesEven if cities managed their on-street parking problems for private vehicles more effectively, bikers, delivery workers, outdoor dining and other uses would still crowd the curb.

BALTIMORE (AP) — Three teenagers were wounded in a shooting outside a west Baltimore high school around the time classes were starting Friday morning, officials said. The shooting adds to a recent uptick in youth violence plaguing the city this year, including several instances of Baltimore public school students being shot on or near high school campuses. In the aftermath of the shooting, which was reported just before 8 a.m., frantic parents gathered outside the school. Baltimore City Schools spokesperson Sherry Christian said officials had made contact with parents of the wounded students earlier that morning. The vocational school is located in a west Baltimore neighborhood that has long suffered from cycles of poverty, disinvestment and violence.
