NEW DELHI, Nov 15 (Reuters) - WhatsApp's India head Abhijit Bose and Meta Platforms Inc's (META.O) public policy director in India Rajiv Aggarwal have resigned, a Meta spokesperson said on Tuesday. The departures follow the exit of Meta's India head Ajit Mohan, who quit this month after four years in the job to join rival Snap Inc (SNAP.N). A Meta spokesperson said both of the exits were unrelated to the current layoffs. Meta has appointed Shivnath Thukral as its new director for public policy in India and the company will look for a replacement for Bose, the spokesperson said. Couple of months back, the head of WhatsApp's India payment business, Manesh Mahatme, also quit to join Amazon India.

PRASETYO UTOMO/G20 Media Center/Handout via REUTERSNEW DELHI, Nov 15 (Reuters) - India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi discussed global and regional developments in a meeting with U.S. President Joe Biden on Tuesday at the Group of 20 (G20) summit in Indonesia, India's foreign ministry said. Modi also exchanged courtesies with Chinese President Xi Jinping at the end of a G20 dinner, according to government sources. Modi and Xi came face-to-face previously at a summit of regional security group Shanghai Cooperation Organisation in Uzbekistan in September. The Indian premier has also met British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, World Bank president David Malpass, and International Monetary Fund (IMF) managing director Kristalina Georgieva, among other leaders, at the G20 summit on the Indonesian island of Bali.
NEW DELHI, Nov 15 (Reuters) - As the global population reaches 8 billion, India, formerly a powerful driver of the number of people on the planet, is experiencing a marked slowdown. The world's population is estimated by the United Nations to have hit 8 billion on Nov. 15, with China and India accounting for more than a third of the total. India estimates its population at 1.38 billion, slightly lower than the 1.4 billion that the World Bank estimates for China. But India's annual population growth has averaged 1.2% since 2011, compared with 1.7% in the 10 years previously, government figures show. That indicated that India's national population policies and health systems were working, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) said in comments shared with Reuters.
IMF agrees $4.5 billion Bangladesh support programme
  + stars: | 2022-11-09 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
LONDON, Nov 9 (Reuters) - The International Monetary Fund (IMF) provisionally agreed a $4.5 billion support programme for Bangladesh on Wednesday as global inflation and the prospect of lower demand for its garment exports raised risks for its macroeconomic stability. The IMF said a "staff-level agreement" had been reached for a 42-month arrangement, including about $3.2 billion from its Extended Credit Facility (ECF) and Extended Fund Facility (EFF), plus about $1.3 billion from its new Resilience and Sustainability Facility (RSF). Bangladesh has become the third country in South Asia to reach a staff-level agreement for loans with the IMF this year after Pakistan and Sri Lanka. A staff-level agreement is typically subject to approval by IMF management and consideration by its Executive Board. "The objectives of Bangladesh's new Fund-supported program are to preserve macroeconomic stability and support strong, inclusive, and green growth, while protecting the vulnerable," the IMF said in a statement.
His trip comes as U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen visits New Delhi this week to hold talks with Indian officials, including possibly on capping Russian oil prices. India has become Russia's largest oil customer after China, as its refiners snap up discounted cargoes shunned by Western buyers. Russia's share of India's oil imports surged to an all-time high of 23% in September, from just about 2% before the invasion. Jaishankar said India needed to boost its exports to Russia to balance bilateral trade that is now tilted towards Russia. NEW DELHI, Nov 8 (Reuters) - India stands to gain from a price cap on Russian oil and the United States hopes that it will take advantage of it, U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said ahead of a visit to India this week, media reported on Tuesday. The G7 nations plan to cap prices of sea-borne oil shipments from Dec. 5, with a second cap on oil products from Feb. 5. India imports 85% of its crude needs and has emerged as Russia's second-largest oil customer after China, taking advantage of discounted Russian oil shunned by some Western buyers. "But even if they use other financial services, we believe the price cap will give them leverage to negotiate good discounts from world markets. Yellen will travel to India on Friday to participate in a meeting of the U.S.-India Economic and Financial Partnership.
NEW DELHI, Nov 7 (Reuters) - India's ports-to-energy conglomerate Adani Group continues to seek strategic equity partners aligned with its long-term investment strategy, debt research firm CreditSights said in a report, flagging concern over the Group's elevated leverage. The Group, led by Asia's richest person Gautam Adani, is looking to expand its presence in power generation and infrastructure and ventured into cement-making operations earlier this year. Chairman Adani said late in September that the group will invest more than $100 billion over the next decade, most of it in the energy transition business. Adani Group did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment. CreditSights added that the group continues to seek strategic equity partners that are aligned with its long-term investment strategy, such as sovereign wealth funds, and also maintains strong relationships with existing partners.

REUTERS/Stringer/File PhotoMORBI, Nov 3 (Reuters) - India's Gujarat state on Thursday said that the search operation following the collapse of a bridge that led to the death of 135 people had been called off. Local fire brigade, state and national disaster teams will be kept on standby, a government statement said. "One person was reportedly missing since the incident, but we have a police report that says no such person is missing. And hence the decision to call off the search operation," GT Pandya, senior administrative official in Morbi told Reuters.

Rescue workers would continue their search for any unaccounted persons for a fourth day, a government control room said, though local officials said on Tuesday that only one person was believed to be missing still. Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has appealed to people in his state to pray for the departed souls and their families. A senior police official told Reuters this week that about 200 people were on the bridge when it collapsed. Local municipality officials said tickets for about 400 people had been sold, although not necessarily to be on the bridge at the same time.

REUTERS/StringerMORBI, India, Nov 1 (Reuters) - The death toll from an Indian foot bridge collapse rose to 135 on Tuesday with search operations entering a third day, although nearly all those believed to have been missing are now accounted for. "Search operations have begun again today. Indian army, navy and national disaster response teams continued search operations as locals gathered on the banks of the river near the twisted remains of the bridge. Indian police arrested nine people on Monday, including ticketing clerks and contractors, as they investigate the collapse of the bridge.
Local officials said about 400 tickets had been sold, although not necessarily to be on the bridge at the same time. "Then the bridge collapsed in front of our eyes," the 32-year-old construction worker said. The witnesses did not know whether the security guards had survived. Those arrested included ticketing clerks and three security guards who were on duty when the bridge collapsed, senior police official Ashok Kumar Yadav said. Reuters could not confirm whether the two guards who witnesses reported seeing at the bridge were among the three arrested.
[1/3] Solar panels are installed on the rooftops of residential houses in Modhera, India's first round-the-clock solar-powered village, in the western state of Gujarat, India, October 19, 2022. Now, however, his machine moves on solar power as earlier this month Prajapati's village of around 6,500 residents, consisting mainly of potters, tailors, farmers and shoemakers, was declared India's first village to run entirely on solar energy all the time. The government buys excess energy produced here from residents if they do not use all of the capacity allotted to the households. For Reena Ben, 36, a housewife, who also works as a tailor part time, the solar power has hugely aided her work. "When we got access to solar power, I bought an electric motor worth 2,000 rupees ($24) to attach to the sewing machine.
Under the amended rules, which will come into effect from Oct. 28, a government panel would be formed to hear complaints from users about content moderation decisions of social media platforms. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government has had strained relations with many Big Tech companies, and New Delhi has been tightening regulation of firms such as Facebook (META.O), YouTube (GOOGL.O) and Twitter (TWTR.N). Tension over social media content decisions has been a particularly thorny issue in India with companies often receiving takedown requests from the government or removing content proactively. Social media firms are already required to have an in-house grievance redressal officer and designate executives to co-ordinate with law enforcement officials. REUTERS/Francis MacarenhasNEW DELHI, Oct 19 (Reuters) - Festival-goers who let off firecrackers in New Delhi during this year's Diwali face up to six months in jail, the city's environment minister said on Wednesday, under a broader ban introduced to help combat extreme winter pollution. Firecrackers have for generations been an integral part of Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights, which takes place next week throughout India. Those found storing and selling firecrackers would face fines of 5,000 rupees and up to three years in jail. Some Hindus see the Diwali firecracker ban as an attempt to interfere with observance of their religion.
BALLARI, India, Oct 17 (Reuters) - Members of India's opposition Congress party voted on Monday to elect its first head in nearly 25 years from outside the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty of leaders, with a veteran loyal to the family expected to win. "We are strongly supporting Kharge and expect he will get 80% to 90% of the votes of party delegates," Ajay Kumar Lallu, a Congress delegate from the most populous state of Uttar Pradesh, told Reuters. "Kharge represents the ideology of the party, has the support of the senior leadership, and is likely to work by taking along party workers," Lallu added. He was speaking as Congress's Bharat Jodo Yatra, or march to unite India, arrived in the district of Ballari in the southern state of Karnataka. Kharge has said he was seeking the "support of the delegates to strengthen Congress for a better India".
Kashmir is claimed in full but ruled in part by nuclear arch-rivals India and Pakistan, who have fought two of their three wars over control of the Himalayan territory. In 2019, India stripped its part of the region of its remaining measure of autonomy, reorganising Jammu and Kashmir state into two federally-controlled territories and changing the constitution to let non-Kashmiris vote and own land there. Kashmir last voted in 2019 in national elections, a few months before it was stripped of its autonomy. Pakistan accuses India of human rights violations in the parts of Kashmir under its control, a charge New Delhi rejects. The BJP says its policies aim to benefit ordinary Kashmiris, but the region's political parties do not see the measure in the same light.
