"Kalibr missiles were launched from a submarine in the waters of the Black Sea at a critically low altitude, which made detection difficult," the statement said. "A civilian employee was killed when one of the administrative buildings of the port was hit," it said. Oleh Kiper, the head of the region's military administration, said on Thursday the employee who died was a security guard born in 1979. Russia fired a barrage of missiles at a key Ukrainian air base on Wednesday, per official sources. The jets are believed to be the only ones that can carry the UK-supplied Storm Shadow missile. Yuriy Inhat, a spokesperson for Ukraine's Air Force Command, said on Telegram that Russia had unleashed a massive barrage towards the Starokostiantyniv air base in Khmelnytskyi, in western Ukraine. In total, Ukrainian air defenses shot down 36 cruise missiles, Inhat said in his post. Starokostiantyniv is, according to Forbes, the base for the only regiment that flies the Su-24 aircraft that carry the UK-supplied Storm Shadow missile.

The Russian shelling and heavy fighting did not stop as Zelenskiy was meeting NATO leaders to discuss security threats posed by Moscow, which denounced the Western military alliance's summit in the Lithuanian capital Vilnius. Debris from successful interceptions caused fires in two terminals, including one holding grain, officials said, but damage from the fires was minimal before they were extinguished.
