Already fighting from behind, Democrats' chances of keeping the House have slipped further in the last month. In a letter to Democratic colleagues on Thursday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called on House members to make a point of defending their record on crime. Republican groups including Citizens for Sanity, headed by former aides to Trump, poured money in recent weeks into ads criticizing Democrats as weak on crime and illegal immigration. In a Reuters/Ipsos poll released Tuesday, respondents were twice as likely to list crime, rather than abortion rights, as the country's biggest problem. Shield PAC, a Third Way-affiliated political action committee, launched ads on Monday promoting the law enforcement records of Virginia's Elaine Luria and Minnesota's Angie Craig, both endangered Democrats.

Now that Sunak has seen off an attempted return by wayward former Prime Minister Boris Johnson, yields are down to 3.7%. About 30 billion pounds of her 45 billion pounds of unfunded tax cuts have been already reversed, leaving a narrower 40 billion pound hole. But cheaper borrowing costs hastened by Sunak’s appointment should cut the gap to just 30 billion pounds, a UK budget expert told Breakingviews. Follow @gfhay on TwitterloadingCONTEXT NEWSFormer finance minister Rishi Sunak will become Britain's next prime minister after winning the race to lead the Conservative Party. Former prime minister and rival Boris Johnson withdrew from the contest saying he could no longer unite the party.
A flight attendant suggested asking yourself whether you need an item or just want to bring it. To help make the process less stressful, I asked a handful of experts, including pilots and frequent fliers, how they pack and which items they can't travel without. Tifsit Teferra, a Delta Air Lines flight attendant, said to be strategic with your carry-on luggage. Bring your own water bottleSarah Guerra, a former Delta flight attendant, suggests packing an empty portable water bottle if you get extra thirsty when you fly. New Englanders have long held a slight edge on their New York neighbors in fiscal sanity (if not always in baseball). Now progressives in Boston want to join New York and other nearby states in a high-tax arms race. Massachusetts voters have the choice to block a tax hike and preserve a revenue model that works. Bay State ballots in November will give voters the choice to place a 4% surtax on incomes above $1 million, bringing the top rate to 9% from 5%. Passing the measure would rocket Massachusetts to seventh from 31st on the list of states with the highest marginal income-tax rates.
By historical standards, Gen X should be in charge of the US by now. Think of them as the godparents of the "Xennials" — those born in the late 1970s or early 1980s who aren't fully Gen X or millennial. No matter whether you deny the 61-year-old Obama is a boomer, Gen X is starting to get up there in age. Michael Ciaglo-Pool/Getty ImagesWhat's the US missing without a Gen X president? "It's like seeing a ghost that doesn't appear," she said of any expectation the presidency would just suddenly open up for Gen X.
I'm happy to spend $5 on an Americano, even if I make a fairly modest income. I prioritize my coffee spending over other things, like new clothes or regular haircuts. Mostly, though, I just enjoy living in a world where local shops, and the people who run them, can thrive. When my husband and I first started dating, we'd often post up in a coffee shop to have "together-alone time." The organization referred to coffee houses as special places "where time and space are consumed, but only the coffee is found on the bill."

Kick the Clutter Habit and Completely Organize Your Life for Good.” Beyond that, clutter can drag you down emotionally. According to New York City-based organizer Lisa Zaslow, founder of Gotham Organizers, is what we buy for our home office. That’s the only place where pens go—and only good pens at that. This acrylic add-on, which can sit on the desk surface and hold standard-size paper and smaller office items, is a favorite of Rosenthal’s. It’s like a little mobile office and when you don’t want it in the room, you can just roll it away.”

A Spoonful of Sanity for Biden in 2023

A memo from White House senior adviser Mike Donilon landed in Washington inboxes last week, claiming President Biden is enjoying a “strong jolt of momentum.”Mr. Donilon spun a tale with Mr. Biden’s “approval rating on the upswing, a resilient economic climate, and strong support for the President’s agenda.” Neither “Republican extremism” nor abortion or “concern for our democracy” decided the November election, he said. Instead, the answer lies in “what hasn’t been fully reported on” or “fully understood”—namely, “how important a role the achievements and agenda of the President and the Democrats played in the midterms.”
A few weeks after we moved in, I decided to try a cleaning service. That afternoon, I came home from work to a sparkling clean house that smelled great and instantly put me in a good mood. Lost time means lost dollars, so to me and my husband, a cleaning service is well worth the money. Although I am generally a frugal person, a cleaning service is something I refuse to save money on. Hiring Lisa has showed me that it's worth it to spend money on services that bring convenience and sanity to my life.
