GameStop’s success doesn’t belong in a meme
  + stars: | 2023-09-07 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
NEW YORK, Sept 7 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Meme-stock success might look more whimper than bang. GameStop (GME.N), the poster-child for pandemic-era retail-trader enthusiasm, reported second-quarter results on Wednesday that showed losses narrowing and positive, if miniscule, adjusted EBITDA. It’s an improvement on the path to sustainability, especially compared to other retail darlings like bankrupt Bed Bath & Beyond. Hardware sales fell 18% from the prior quarter, as the after-effects of supply shortages fade. GameStop’s share price may still be well above 2019 levels, but its ambitions are as low as ever.

Sales of software and collectibles contributed to about 49% of total revenue in the second quarter, the company said. Revenue rose about 2% to $1.16 billion for the quarter ended July 29, GameStop said, topping estimates of $1.14 billion, according to three analysts polled by LSEG. Signage is seen at the headquarters of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in Washington, D.C., U.S., May 12, 2021. SEC Chair Gary Gensler said the rules will increase transparency and competition in the private funds industry, which oversees around $20 trillion in assets and has been accused by advocacy groups of opacity and conflicts of interest. The changes require private funds to issue quarterly fee and performance reports and to perform annual audits. Bryan Corbett, chief executive officer of the Managed Funds Association (MFA), said the rules will increase costs for investors and curb competition, he added. If successful, Wednesday's coup in Gabon would be the eighth in West and Central Africa in three years. Widespread condemnation, or the threat of military intervention, have done little to unseat coup leaders in Mali, Burkina Faso, Guinea, Niger and Chad since 2020. Minutes before the coup announcement, Gabon's election authority declared him the emphatic victor of Saturday's election. I am calling on you to make noise, to make noise, to make noise. The triggers for the Gabon coup were different to those in the Sahel countries further north, where insecurity caused by Islamist militants has done much to sway public opinion.

Jakub Porzycki | Nurphoto | Getty ImagesBed Bath & Beyond shares continue to trade at enormous volumes even as the wildly popular meme stock appears weeks away from being declared worthless. It also plans to adopt the company's stock ticker and change the current OSTK with BBBY in the hope of capitalizing on the long-standing household name. In its SEC filing in April, the company cautioned that trading in its stock during the ongoing Chapter 11 cases was "highly speculative and poses substantial risks." The company's planned confirmation hearing will take place on Sep. 12, but there have been no positive catalysts to the recent purchases of the company's shares. This would suggest that the current vast swathes of investors trading in the company's stock may be doing so purely on doomed speculation, and will be left empty handed.
