Mayor Eric Adams has made the conversion of struggling office buildings into residences a major component of his attempt to address New York City’s housing shortage. Mr. Amro said that despite the Flatiron’s quirky interior, its numerous windows would make a conversion into residences far easier than most office buildings. But the construction would require some major internal changes: Stairs and elevators must be moved around and consolidated. The owners have considered various plans, some with multiple units on each floor, with about 40 total residences. The ground floor, however, will remain retail space; T-Mobile has a store there with a long-term lease.

New York City is facing down a housing shortage, all while some apartments disappear. Around 50,000 multi-family row houses have been consolidated to become one- or two-family homes. Combining apartments isn't necessarily a bad thing, but is concerning during a housing shortage. AdvertisementAdvertisementNew York City, famed for its residents stacked upon each other, is actually quietly losing density in some places — and you can blame people expanding their apartments. AdvertisementAdvertisementSome developers are aiming to ameliorate both the housing shortage and post-pandemic glut of office space in the city.

Haiti and the Dominican Republic together make up the island of Hispaniola. Theirs has been a history splintered with xenophobia, colorism and violence that has seethed into the present day. Haiti’s government said its farmers need the water to grow crops, while Mr. Abinader claims it will divert water needed by Dominican farmers. The border closures reinforced the dangerous nativist Dominican rhetoric Mr. Abinader and his government have deployed in their efforts to contain Haitian immigration. Claims that Haitians are invading have led to the banning of Haitians from public transit, mass deportations and, reportedly, looting of Haitian-owned residences.

With lifespans longer and families more spread out, it's essential that I think about long-term care. Long-term care insurance comes in many forms at many costs. The days of an unmarried woman taking care of elderly relatives are a thing of the past, which is why long-term care insurance products are more popular. Long-term care insurance goes beyond the standard health care insurance policy. A long-term care insurance policy protects against the risk of having to pay out of pocket for in-home and/or out-of-home care services.

The storm caused about $19 billion in damage to New York City. In densely populated cities like New York, flooding risks are heightened because of the built environment and lack of green spaces.
