Influencers linked to China have also seized on divisive material about Hurricanes Helene and Milton, claiming without evidence on social media that “U.S. spending on foreign conflicts had undermined support for disaster victims,” the U.S. official said. The revelations from the U.S. official follow recently released research from the London-based Institute for Strategic Dialogue, which tracks disinformation and online extremism. Local, state and federal officials have struggled to counter a wave of disinformation about the hurricanes and their aftermath, including baseless conspiracy theories about weather modification and false claims about disaster relief efforts.

The alleged shooter, John Sawchak – Moturi’s neighbor – surrendered around 1:24 a.m. Monday, following an hourslong standoff with police, O’Hara said at a news conference early Monday. Realtor.com identified the top 10 places in the US with the lowest cost of living. Small cities in the South and Midwest dominate the list, with a Texas city taking the top spot. President Joe Biden is moving forward with another student debt relief plan. An estimated 8 million federal student loan borrowers experiencing financial hardship may be eligible to have their loans forgiven — some even automatically — if the regulation is finalized as proposed, the Department of Education announced Friday. The proposed regulation is the result of a months-long process known as negotiated rulemaking where the Biden administration worked with stakeholders, experts, advocates and more to develop a plan to deliver debt relief to borrowers facing financial hardship. In the coming weeks, the proposal will head to the Federal Register where it will have a 30-day public comment period before it's finalized.
