Rather than developing its own AI models, JPMorgan designed LLM Suite to be a portal that allows users to tap external large language models — the complex programs underpinning generative AI tools — and launched it with ChatGPT maker OpenAI’s LLM, said the people. ChatGPT banThe bank is giving employees what is essentially OpenAI’s ChatGPT in a JPMorgan-approved wrapper more than a year after it restricted employees from using ChatGPT. The number of uses for generative AI are “exponentially bigger” than previous technology because of how flexible LLMs are, Heitsenrether said. Ultimately, the generative AI field may develop into “five or six big foundational models” that dominate the market, she said. TEL AVIV — Yahya Sinwar, the alleged mastermind of the Oct. 7 terror attack on Israel, is the undisputed leader of Hamas after the militant group’s political leader Ismail Haniyeh was assassinated and Israel confirmed it had killed Mohammed Deif, the military chief. Until now, Sinwar has remained largely out of the spotlight, a shadowy figure believed to be hiding in Hamas’ labyrinth of tunnels underneath the Gaza Strip. But his appointment as the group’s political leader has left many wondering what it could mean for the ongoing cease-fire and hostage release talks. For Basem Naim, a senior Hamas official, Sinwar’s promotion suggests it’s business as usual for the group. “Whoever decided to assassinate Ismail Haniyeh does not care about the hostages,” said Thabeet Elhmour, a Palestinian political analyst and writer based in Gaza’s southern city of Khan Younis.

Previously, running shoes were “flats” designed with a less-is-more approach. Carbon-plated supershoes from various brands are now worn by your average runners chasing personal records at major marathons around the world. Since the Vaporfly’s debut in 2016, runners have shattered world records, including achieving a sub-two-hour marathon. But a group of these women did admit that the decision by Democrats to swap out Biden for Harris does concern them. “My concern about Trump is him making too aggressive of choices and us not being able to recover from it. Opinion | Trump’s Call to End Taxes on Social Security

To the Editor:Re “Trump Dangles New Tax Cuts, Now for a Larger Voting Group” (front page, Aug. 8):Donald Trump’s latest campaign gambit, calling for an end to taxes on Social Security benefits, risks deepening a generational divide already evidenced by his indifference to man-made climate change and the more than $8 trillion added to the national debt during his term in office. This article cited an estimate of another $1.8 trillion added to the national debt over a decade if his proposal comes to pass. This does not include the impact of continuing the Trump-era tax cuts beyond their expiration date in 2025. The Brookings Institution estimated this would add another $2 trillion to the national debt by 2028. Arthur GreenbergExeter, N.H.To the Editor:As a liberal, I’d support Donald Trump’s proposal to eliminate taxes on Social Security if he would pay for it by eliminating tax breaks for private equity investors, hedge fund managers, and other special interest groups that bought tax breaks from Congress, and by taxing the fossil fuel industry and other polluters.

In today’s edition, we report on how Vice President Kamala Harris’ search for a running mate is nearing the finish line. In case that wasn’t already clear from the vetting, the interviews and the obsessive media attention, consider the long — and still lengthening — list of ways one selection shaped decades of national politics. The pick influenced not just Obama’s electoral victories and the Obama administration but also every successive presidential election since then. And it could keep doing so for years, as Vice President Kamala Harris prepares to make her choice Tuesday. And Harris’ running mate selection could anoint the Democratic Party’s next presidential favorite, potentially into the 2030s.

After Donald Trump told journalists on Wednesday that his presidential opponent Kamala Harris “turned Black” for political gain, Trump’s comments have impacted the way many multirace voters are thinking about the two candidates. Some identify with Harris’ politics more than others but, overall, they told NBC News that Trump’s comments will not go unnoticed. She said she doesn’t support Harris’ past criminal justice policies as a district attorney and she doesn’t think President Joe Biden is doing enough to support Gaza. She uses everybody, including her racial identity!”Trump has relied on his familiar tactic of attacking Harris’ race and gender since Biden dropped out of the presidential race and endorsed Harris. Opinion | Fighting Malaria: The Role of Two Groups
  + stars: | 2024-08-05 | by ( ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
To the Editor:Re “Lives at Risk” (Science Times, July 23):The New York Times spotlights malaria, which kills nearly half a million African children annually, and the important role malaria vaccines are playing in reducing child deaths. The malaria vaccine pilots, for which the World Health Organization provided scientific and technical leadership, demonstrate the critical role W.H.O. advanced the first malaria vaccine (RTS,S) at the request of member states, even as global health partners focused their attention on other agendas. The pilots provided assurance that the vaccine is safe and highly effective — reducing child deaths by 13 percent. In some areas, combining the vaccine, insecticide-treated nets and chemoprevention can reduce malaria by more than 90 percent.

Opinion | Biden’s Proposed Supreme Court Reforms
  + stars: | 2024-08-04 | by ( ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
To the Editor:Re “The Election Is Crucial to the Future of the Supreme Court,” by Erwin Chemerinsky (Opinion guest essay, July 31):Regarding this essay supporting President Biden’s effort to reform the Supreme Court, as well as the current Democratic push in this same direction, does anyone seriously believe that this would be an issue at all if the Democrats were satisfied with the Supreme Court decisions? The only reason it is an issue is that they don’t like the recent results from that court, and that is the very reason that Supreme Court reform is a bad idea: It is 100 percent politically motivated. The movement would have a lot more credibility if it wasn’t arising immediately on the heels of recent Supreme Court decisions that the Democrats don’t like, such as expanding the scope of presidential immunity, overturning the Chevron doctrine and especially overturning Roe v. Wade. Peter E. MeltzerWynnewood, Pa.To the Editor:While I often agree with Erwin Chemerinsky, I differ here on two important points.

Still, the discussion comes as Black workers have made significantly positive — and, in many cases, historic — employment advancements. “So, to suggest that immigration is lowering the black employment rate is just not bearing out, based on this superficial look at the facts,” Algernon said. The pandemic recovery and economic expansion since has resulted in wage gains for many workers, and that has included Black workers, she noted. “We talk a lot about the 2-to-1 ratio between Black and White unemployment (the Black unemployment rate typically is twice the White unemployment rate), so, the progress has been marginal in terms of that disparity.”In July, the unemployment rate for White workers was 3.8% (versus 6.3% for Black workers). “For example, according to BLS data, Black workers are just 12.8% of all employed Americans, but 48.4% of postal service workers, 38.1% of nurse assistants, and 36.1% of security guards,” Pollak said.

Consumers who try to buy popular weight loss drugs online without a prescription risk being scammed or receiving unsafe products, a new study shows. Shortages of the popular weight loss medication, which belongs to a class of drugs called GLP-1s, have led to “a black market of illegal knockoffs,” said Dr. Christopher McGowan, the founder, medical director and research director of True You Weight Loss, a weight loss clinic in Cary, North Carolina. Medicare doesn’t cover the drugs when prescribed for weight loss, and many state Medicaid plans heavily restrict coverage. Online scamsSome websites purporting to be online pharmacies take consumers’ money but never deliver the medications, according to the study.
