Mick Jagger was supposed to be singing “Start Me Up” in stadiums across the U.S. this year. The buzz in the music business was that a tour was booked. Instead, the Rolling Stones in April made an inside joke via social media: a 1972 photograph of a debauched Keith Richards next to a sign that reads: “Patience Please… A Drug Free America Comes First!”

The veteran South African politician, Zulu prince and controversial figure during the apartheid liberation struggle, died last week aged 95. South African media reported that two giraffes and six impalas had been slaughtered and skinned as part of the ritual preparations. The editors themselves put it at four stars, and there was not a critical backlash to the thing. I confess: I probably went too far. The Rolling Stones Start Up Again

For the band members, the most crucial part of the Rolling Stones sound is what Richards calls “weaving” — the ever-changing, spur-of-the-moment interplay between the instruments, particularly the guitars. The band recorded the core of most of the songs together in the studio, playing off one another as they would onstage. Of course we have disagreements about how things should be, but I think that’s pretty normal. And that’s a matter of rhythm.”The Stones groove got its foundation from Watts, who died at 80. “There would have been a Rolling Stones without Charlie Watts, but without Charlie Watts there wouldn’t have been the Rolling Stones,” Richards said.

Emata, a Ugandan startup that provides loans to farmers in East Africa, has raised $2.4 million in funding. It's also fundamentally unfair as farmers need capital to grow but a lot of money goes to people with connections, not the best farmers." Kampala-based Emata wants to be tech first in its offering and uses WhatsApp as a loan origination platform, given its popularity in a region where cell data is at a premium. The company claims it grew 7x in 2022 and could point to strong metrics when dealing with investors having already dispersed over $1 million in loans. Funding will go towards expanding the company's tech offering and looking into new verticals.

4, he’s missing, he’s up there. Jagger told The Los Angeles Times in October 2021 that “Hackney Diamonds” would have been finished long ago if not for the coronavirus pandemic. Last month, the Stones teased the album via an advertisement for a fake glass repair company, called Hackney Diamonds, that appeared in a London newspaper. The ad’s text referred to several of the band’s well-known songs: “Our friendly team promises you satisfaction. That was “typical Stones’s fakery,” Norman said, because the band had no previous association with Hackney.

A judge set bond Tuesday for the only defendant in the Georgia election interference case who was jailed after surrendering to authorities last week. All of the other defendants, including Trump, were released last week on bond after they were booked. Richardson also cited a pending case for Floyd, in which he allegedly assaulted a federal officer this year, as among the reasons she denied his bond request. Prosecutors in the Georgia case have accused Floyd, the former leader of Black Voices for Trump, of involvement in a scheme to pressure election worker Ruby Freeman into making false statements. Trump and other co-defendants in the case are scheduled to be arraigned on Sept. 6, though some have waived formal arraignments and already pleaded not guilty.

Philadelphia recently announced it would buy 91 properties containing green spaces and gardens. Studies show urban gardens can help keep neighborhoods cooler and perhaps reduce gun violence and depression. The urban garden he helped start nearly a decade ago on abandoned lots in West Philadelphia was finally protected. Thousands of properties tied up in the deal sat neglected for decades, and locals transformed some into urban gardens. Many Black and brown neighborhoods don't have enough green spaces, which makes residents more susceptible to extreme heat.
