President Joe Biden's student loan forgiveness program can proceed after a judge Wednesday let a temporary restraining order on the plan expire. He wrote that he would transfer the case to the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri. The states that brought the lawsuit have argued that the administration’s rule that would mass-cancel student debt would be detrimental to income tax revenue. Biden laid out the revised plan in April after the Supreme Court nullified the administration’s original student debt forgiveness program in 2023. If the administration’s proposed rules are finalized this fall, it would bring the total number of recipients of student debt relief under Biden's tenure to 30 million, the Department of Education said in August.

Voting in Katmai National Park's famed Fat Bear Week was underway Wednesday after a bear killed one of this year's competitors and delayed the bracket reveal by a day. Voting takes place over the course of seven days, culminating in Fat Bear Tuesday, when one bear is crowned the fattest of the season. The winner will then try to beat Bear #128, also known as Grazer, a mother bear who holds last year's Fat Bear title. The injured cub later died and the surviving cub competed in Fat Bear Junior 2024, according to the park service. In another round one face-off, Bear #903, a smaller male and another Fat Bear Week newbie, will meet Bear #909, the mother of the junior contest's winner.

Harris will visit Georgia, which former President Donald Trump toured Monday and where he criticized Harris and the Biden administration for their response to the hurricane. This week's small business tour is the Harris campaign's latest effort to quell Trump's gains. Harris is adopting that argument for her own campaign, working to draw a similar contrast with her Republican opponent. "Vice President Harris has proven that she will be a champion for small business," Richard Garcia, the Harris campaign's small business engagement director, wrote in a statement Tuesday. Over the next week, the Harris campaign will extend that pitch specifically to small businesses in Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania. So far, Harris has proposed giving small businesses a $50,000 tax deduction for their startup expenses, a tenfold expansion from the current $5,000 deduction.
