CNN —Justice Clarence Thomas disclosed Thursday that Republican megadonor Harlan Crow paid for private jet trips for Thomas in 2022 to attend a speech in Texas and a vacation at Crow’s luxurious New York estate, as ethics questions continue to rock the Supreme Court. Thomas made the disclosures after receiving an extension to file the yearly reports that were originally due in May 2023. In a statement after the ProPublica report, Thomas acknowledged the friendship but stressed that Crow did not have business before the court. In addition, he said that he should have disclosed a 2014 private real estate deal between Crow, Thomas and members of Thomas’ family. According to the disclosure, Thomas flew down to be the keynote speaker of the event in February, but returned via private jet “due to an unexpected ice storm.”The talk was rescheduled in May and Thomas rode round trip on Crow’s plane.

Robert Alexander/Getty ImagesTo do this, the researchers analyzed huge datasets spanning 30 years to connect financial transactions to carbon pollution. They found the wealthiest 10% in the US, households making more than about $178,000, were responsible for 40% of the nation’s human-caused, planet-heating pollution. But a household making money from the hospital industry would need to bring in $11 million to produce the same amount of planet-heating pollution. Identifying the main actors behind the climate crisis is vital for governments to develop policies that cut planet-heating pollution in a fair way, he added. “At the moment, the way the economy works is that it takes money and turns it into climate pollution that is destabilizing life on Earth,” Nicholas said.

"I've lived on a lot of planes lately, direct conversations with CMOs and CEOs," she said. The X CEO's travels included jetting to Los Angeles last month to try to woo Hollywood stars, influencers, and Disney executives, the Financial Times reported. Goldman Sachs is having an identity crisis

I never thought I'd write this but … I miss the old Goldman Sachs. That was the voice of Goldman Sachs 2009 — the adamantine firm that managed to make its way through the crisis relatively unscathed. This sort of dry humor worked back then, but for today's Goldman Sachs, the joke just doesn't hit the same way. Van Praag — who was once dubbed "Goldman Sachs' Rococo PR prince" by The Observer — left the firm in 2012. It would be nice to see the old Goldman Sachs ferocity is still out there somewhere, even if it's not on Wall Street.

CNN —Will former President Donald Trump accept a plea deal, potentially sparing himself prison and sparing us all a repeat of his presidency? It’s a compelling argument, and one that would certainly be better for the nation than Trump winning in 2024 and pardoning himself; it would be better for Trump than winding up behind bars. Trump has been embroiled in thousands of lawsuits; he’s the first former president to face federal charges. Betting on a 2024 win is a big gamble for Trump, especially if the consequence of that loss isn’t just humiliation, but a jail cell. His travel extended well outside of traditional hot spots for a primary campaign, including events in Wisconsin and Oklahoma. Now, DeSantis’ political operation says it is embracing his position as an underdog. But that leaves questions about one of the largest expenses on DeSantis’ first quarter fundraising reports: private travel. DeSantis’ campaign has paid nearly half a million dollars in travel expenses to a company that didn’t exist until two days before he launched his White House bid. In guidance to some donors and supporters, the campaign foreshadowed that they expect these interactions to show DeSantis’ “fiery” side.

Many airlines, corporate fliers and governments see so-called sustainable aviation fuel, or SAF, as a way to reduce aviation’s contribution to global warming. It recently converted an oil refinery in California and is expanding its refineries in Singapore and Rotterdam. We worked on a former fossil-fuel refinery and converted that into a renewable refinery. The carbon footprint of aviation can be affected today from today’s SAF technology. It will continue to incentivize current SAF production, but it will be difficult to be the impetus for future production.

Sen. Ed Markey on Wednesday announced legislation to raise taxes on jet fuel used by private planes. Private jet travel, which is the most polluting form of transport, has surged in recent years. The bill — called the Fueling Alternative Transportation with a Carbon Aviation Tax (FATCAT) Act — would raise federal taxes on private jet fuel from $0.22 to $1.95 per gallon. CNN —Spanish environmental activists spray-painted a superyacht moored in Ibiza on Sunday. Activists from the environmental group Futuro Vegetal posted a video showing them standing in front of the superyacht named Kaos, holding a banner that says: “You Consume Others Suffer.” The activists then sprayed the vessel with red and black paint. According to multiple shipping industry news sites the yacht belongs to Nancy Walton Laurie, the billionaire heiress of Walmart. The two protesters were detained by the Spanish Civil Guard on Sunday morning and were expected to be released Monday, according to Futuro Vegetal. “The action puts the finishing touch to the “Jets and Yachts, the party is over” campaign, convened by Extinction Rebellion Ibiza who demand the prohibition of private jets and the end of luxury emissions,” Futuro Vegetal said.

UAE-based Emirates has launched a new private jet arm using Embraer Phenom 100EV business planes. Emirates hopes its new strategy will lure in more high-paying customers as private aviation booms. The demand for private aviation continues to hold strong post-pandemic, particularly in the Middle East where business travel has rebounded quicker than in other regions. On Wednesday, the carrier introduced a brand new on-demand charter service that will ferry elite customers from Dubai to cities in the Gulf region using a fleet of Embraer Phenom 100EV twin-engine private jets. "While it would give operators such as us stiff competition, business travel trends in the UAE still lean towards larger groups of ten travelers or more," she continued.

Amid these concerns, one private jet owner has decided to scale back. In line with Prince’s thoughts, the Institute for Policy Studies report advocates for higher taxes on both private jet sales and fuel. They also call for the federal jet fuel tax to be doubled from $0.219 per gallon to $0.438 per gallon for the most frequent private jet users. We should have very high taxes, [usage] taxes and fuel taxes that discourage private jet owners.”Collins adds that the construction of private aviation infrastructure should stop altogether, as this form of transportation should be phased out.
