REUTERS/Loren ElliottApril 21 (Reuters) - Former Peruvian President Alejandro Toledo surrendered to U.S. authorities on Friday, a U.S. Marshals Service official told Reuters, a day after his bid to block his extradition to Peru over corruption charges was denied. LIMA, Peru — Two of Peru’s former presidents are behind bars, one convicted of human rights violations, the other accused of illegally trying to dissolve Congress. A third ex-president may soon join that ignominious group with all three sharing the same prison. Alejandro Toledo, who led Peru two decades ago, surrendered on Friday to law enforcement officials in California, according to a U.S. Once he is returned to Peru, Mr. Toledo is expected to be incarcerated while the case against him proceeds. Peru has endured years of political corruption and instability that has resulted in the Andean country being ruled by seven presidents in the last seven years.
WASHINGTON, April 20 (Reuters) - A U.S. federal judge in Washington on Thursday denied former Peruvian President Alejandro Toledo's bid to block his extradition to Peru, where he faces corruption charges. His lawyers had filed for an emergency stay earlier in the day to block his extradition, which was planned for Friday. "His emergency motion to stay is denied," U.S. District Judge Beryl Howell said in an order on Thursday. In her ruling, Howell said Toledo "has long been afforded substantial process" in the U.S. courts to contest his extradition. Howell, citing various legal factors, also said Toledo had failed to "demonstrate entitlement" to a stay of his extradition.
Netflix announced it planned to start rolling out paid account sharing later this quarter. The company has already cracked down on password sharing in Canada and some European and Latin American countries. You may have less than 2 months left to share your Netflix password with people outside your home before the company starts charging for the privilege. That means that by the end of June, you may be unable to give out your Netflix password for free. The streaming giant said account sharing affected over 100 million households, which "undermines our long-term ability to invest in and improve Netflix."

Peru's Justice Minister Jose Tello said on Wednesday night that a California court judge had ordered Toledo to turn himself in on Friday to the U.S. Marshals Service and await extradition after his request for bail was revoked. "Sooner rather than later, Toledo will answer to Peruvian justice," Tello told television station Canal N, adding that his extradition should take place in a "matter of days". The Peruvian minister said 77-year-old Toledo is expected to be held while he awaits trial in a jail complex in the outskirts of Lima that was built to hold former president Alberto Fujimori. Toledo was arrested in the U.S. in July 2019 following a formal request by Peru for his extradition.

LIMA, March 28 (Reuters) - Peruvian prosecutors are investigating President Dina Boluarte and former president Pedro Castillo for allegedly laundering money as part of a criminal organization, the attorney general's office said on Twitter on Tuesday. Latin America stocks are off to a solid start this year, and Morgan Stanley sees some names in the region posting strong gains in the near term. Latin American stocks got a boost last year as commodity prices rose due to the global economic reopening and the Ukraine-Russia war breaking out. Brazilian bank Itau Unibanco made the list, with Morgan Stanley expecting a total return of 54% this year, including dividends. "We think Itaú's strategic foresight and operational capabilities represent a meaningful competitive advantage in the marketplace," Morgan Stanley said in the note. However, Morgan Stanley said Credicorp "remains a top-class banking franchise that could navigate the current challenging based on management's execution capabilities."

HUARAL, Peru, Feb 25 (Reuters) - Peruvian archaeologists have discovered some 30 pre-Inca era graves in a cemetery belonging to the Chancay people, a group who inhabited valleys of Peru's central coast from 1000 to 1500 AD. The newly found 800-year-old graves have allowed specialists to know more about the Chancay culture, which has been little researched, Pieter Van Dalen, archeologist at San Marcos university, told Reuters. "In the last year we have discovered more than 2,000 burials in different cemeteries of the Chancay culture," he added. On Friday, shares of Enel Distribucion Peru rose 25% on Lima's main stock exchange.

Last August, the U.S. Department of Justice said it would return to Peru about $686,000 seized from Toledo. Federal prosecutors in the New York City borough of Brooklyn said Odebrecht had paid Toledo $25 million in bribes for highway construction contracts. Peru has faced a wave of corruption scandals related to the Odebrecht case in recent years.
Feb 21 (Reuters) - Bird flu has killed tens of thousands of birds, mostly pelicans, and at least 716 sea lions in protected areas across Peru, the authorities said, as the H5N1 strain spreads throughout the region. Peru recorded its first case of the virus in November in birds in the north of the country. "We have also recorded since mid-January the unusual death of many sea lions, so far we have about 716 dead sea lions in seven protected natural areas of the coast," said Roberto Gutierrez, head of surveillance of the National Service of Natural Protected Areas.
