GE HealthCare on Thursday announced it is teaming up with Amazon Web Services to build new generative artificial intelligence models and tools that can efficiently analyze complex medical data. GE HealthCare, which offers medical imaging, ultrasound, patient care and pharmaceutical diagnostic solutions, believes generative AI can help. GE HealthCare offers its own AI tools, but its partnership with AWS will supply the company with the technical infrastructure required to quickly build generative AI models and tools at scale. GE HealthCare will use AWS' solutions like Amazon Bedrock and Amazon SageMaker, according to a release Thursday. Kass-Hout said GE HealthCare maintains rigorous testing and standards before bringing products to market, and the same will be true with the generative AI applications it develops.

Pfizer on Wednesday said its experimental gene therapy for a rare genetic blood-clotting disorder succeeded in a large late-stage trial, paving the way for a potential approval. Without enough of that protein, the blood cannot clot properly, increasing the risk of spontaneous bleeding and severe bleeding after surgery. Pfizer said its one-time treatment significantly cut the number of annual bleeding episodes in patients with moderately severe to severe hemophilia A after 15 months. If approved, Pfizer's therapy will compete with BioMarin Pharmaceutical 's one-time treatment Roctavian. BioMarin is reportedly considering whether to divest its hemophilia A therapy, which costs $2.9 million.

Sanctions are instead straining Russia, and could do more if the West is patient enough, a group of eight European finance ministers jointly argued in The Guardian. Large financial stimulus is the chief tailwind keeping Russia resistant, but the ministers noted that isn't an endless pillar of support. The eight ministers argued that these conditions make Western sanctions more important than ever, adding that pressure should be cranked up on Russia. They noted that if the West is patient enough, Russia's confidence will eventually slump as long-term damage takes hold.

AdvertisementA study published earlier this year focused on the treatment of depression among veterans using ketamine taken through an IV. The doses provided at least partial relief to many of the test subjects and after six weeks of ketamine infusions, depression scores dropped significantly. "Soldiers, for them, it's natural to consider themselves like a strong man," Matrenitsky said, explaining that the effects of the ketamine therapy allow individuals to overcome defensive barriers over their emotions. In partnership with Heal Ukraine Trauma, Matrenitsky along with other healthcare professionals have teamed up to form the Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy initiative in hopes of educating Ukrainian therapists on Ketamine-Assisted Therapy.

I witnessed this firsthand as a White House physician for three presidents, including as the designated physician to the president for Barack Obama during his first term. My presidential patients often worked 12-hour days seven days a week. My role as White House physician was to keep the president healthy and performing optimally, and to provide the public with a candid medical assessment of his ability to carry out the duties of his office. Typically, the 25th Amendment came into play when a president was going under general anesthesia for a colonoscopy or scheduled surgical procedure. It is widely assumed that the physician to the president will gather and provide pertinent medical information to those contemplating whether the amendment needs to be invoked.

As megacaps continue to decline, CNBC's Jim Cramer said he remains optimistic about their prospects in the long run. "You just need to get over the hump, a hump that periodically scares people out of this whole asset class." Cramer said he always encourages investors take profits on winners when they can, otherwise it's possible to "get obliterated." As Abbott's organic sales growth continues to shine, the market will realize both concerns are overblown. The FreeStyle Libre itself, which had 20% organic growth in the quarter, also still has plenty of runway for further growth. Investors should focus instead on the upward revision to management's full-year outlook for both top-line organic growth and earnings. The combination of Thursday's strong results and immediate decline in share price is setting up a positive risk vs. reward setup.
