CNN —Conservators at the Guggenheim Museum in New York have uncovered a small dog hidden beneath the surface of a Pablo Picasso painting. The image of a charming lapdog wearing a red bow was revealed by museum experts during a technical analysis of the Spanish artist’s painting “Le Moulin de la Galette” ahead of an exhibition of his early works. “Le Moulin de la Galette” depicts a lively scene at the titular venue — a famous Parisian dance hall that was painted by other artists including Pierre-Auguste Renoir. Modifying paintings later became part of Picasso’s regular practice, Barten said, adding that “Le Moulin de la Galette” is now considered one of the earliest examples of this. “Le Moulin de la Galette” is the “centerpiece” of the Guggenheim’s show, said Barten, whose team of conservators also restored the artwork’s surface by removing decades of dirt and non-original varnish.
Would You Include Skims in Your Wedding?

Kim Kardashian’s shapewear brand Skims has developed a cult following for its everyday basics and intimates and its neutral color palette — so much so that it has inspired a subgenre of “Skims dupes and alternatives.” Customer favorites include a form-fitting maxi lounge dress that drapes down the body. Last week, Skims expanded into bridal with 63 styles of dresses, lingerie, shapewear and loungewear, with some of its best sellers updated in white, baby blue and pink. At first glance, a shapewear brand expanding into bridal may seem random, but it’s a common move for many intimates brands. Savage X Fenty and Victoria’s Secret, two of Skims’s competitors, both have bridal shops. “Everything is white and ivory and lacy, and it’s their time to wear these pieces in those colors,” she said.

Can Artistry Be Built Into a Machine?

One day recently, on a table in Jean Oh’s lab in the Squirrel Hill neighborhood of Pittsburgh, a robot arm was busy at a canvas. Her doctoral student, Peter Schaldenbrand, stood alongside. In recent years, Mr. Schaldenbrand has led an effort to bridge the sim-to-real gap between sophisticated image-generation programs like Stable Diffusion and physical works of art like drawings and paintings. This has mainly been manifest in the project known as FRIDA, the latest iteration of which was rhythmically whirring away in a corner of the lab. The process of moving from language prompts to pixelated images to brushstrokes can be complicated, as the robot must account for “the noise of the real world,” Dr. Oh said.
Claire Ptak first learned about Meghan Markle through Ms. Markle’s former lifestyle blog, The Tig, a so-called hub for the discerning palette that she started in 2014. After Ms. Ptak, the owner of Violet, a cafe and bakery in London, published “The Violet Bakery Cookbook” in 2015, she sent a copy to Ms. Markle, who later asked to interview her. “Great questions,” Ms. Ptak, 48, said of that conversation. Ms. Ptak had by then been living in London for about a decade. Last year, Ms. Ptak made a version of the cake for a birthday party for the couple’s daughter, Princess Lilibet Diana.
Grocery apps exploded during the pandemic and attained wild, multibillion-dollar valuations. European market leader Getir and smaller rival Flink are both set for big valuation haircuts. Consolidation has come quickly, as smaller startups run into the realities of a low-margin model and find they can't keep up the requisite spend to chase consumers.
Amazon launched a public relations project called Ratatouille 3 years ago, according to a report from Bloomberg. For the past three years, Amazon has been trying to appeal to citizens of France through an internal project called "Ratatouille," Bloomberg reported. Amazon's Ratatouille project is a combination of a dozen or so sub-projects that are aimed at "Frenchifying" the company, Bloomberg said, citing a source who requested anonymity. Amazon's project was reportedly inspired by the film, Bloomberg said. McDonald's bettered its image in France by making deals with local farmers and modifying its menus to the French palette, Bloomberg said.

A recent Goldman Sachs report found 300 million jobs around the world stand to be impacted by AI and automation. Just like similar trends in history, creative jobs will be in demand after the widespread inclusion of generative AI and other AI tech in the workplace. But even though these jobs will still exist, their tasks and responsibilities could likely be diminished by GPT and generative AI. But other forms of generative AI can go further, reconstructing different outcomes based on patterns and learnings, and almost mirroring a human brain, he said. In this broader set of tasks, generative AI can mimic what an engineer would do through the development cycle.
‘Renfield’ Review: Dracula, Worst Boss Ever
  + stars: | 2023-04-13 | by ( Manohla Dargis | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
Count Dracula has been dead for so long and gone through so many iterations — exotic, satanic, romantic — that it’s almost surprising there’s any juice left in the thirsty old boy. Yet here he is again, resurrected by a glorious, vamping Nicolas Cage, swinging a cape, baring his fangs and stealing his every scene. He’s basically toast, and our guy, the Count’s unhappy servant, Renfield (a Nicholas Hoult type, relatable, smooth, good-looking) — after years of groveling and scarfing bugs — has had it. After a century of pop-culture celebrity and box-office success there’s no need: He is what he is, a vampire. He’s also, unsurprisingly given the job’s grisly requirements, a terrible boss, which the movie uses to economically establish how the long-suffering Renfield joins the support group.

Earthy, muted shades are becoming increasingly popular among car buyers, according to the LA Times. The muted cars are suddenly popping up everywhere, lining freeways and parking lots in unassuming shades of gray, black, brown, tan, and green. "The term 'stealth' comes to mind when we see a car in matte gray or matte black. Derek Joyce, a spokesman for Hyundai Motor North America, told the Los Angeles Times that the muted shades of its Hyundai Santa Cruz model are outselling more traditional hues. The styles are also picking up steam on TikTok, where users are sharing videos of their matte cars, or of transforming old models using the new trendy paints.

There’s nothing wrong with Valentine standbys like flowers or chocolate—opt for an arrangement with staying power like the paper creations conjured by Livia Cetti of the Green Vase (we’re partial to the jet-black hollyhock) or a box of single-origin truffles courtesy of San Francisco’s Dandelion Chocolate. But to fulfill Valentine’s expectations in a less expected way, we suggest going the beauty and wellness route, particularly with products that span the color spectrum (yes, the classic reds and pinks but also canary yellow and rich amethyst and pea green too). From indulgent face creams to artful makeup palettes to a Pilates machine that tucks away, here’s a list of products that are sure to become objects of affection. Painter’s Palettes…for the FaceThanks to a bounty of TikTok and YouTube tutorials, creative experimentation with makeup is trending. So go for a painterly palette—Dior’s is a leopard-encased nod to the brand’s muse Mitzah Bricard, the ’50s-era fashion icon known for her love of all things leopard; makeup artist Jo Baker’s credit card–size versions for her new line, Bakeup, are slim but pack serious pigment payoff; and the colors in Isamaya’s rhinestone-studded, punk-rock Wild Star compact live up to its moniker.
In New York City apartments, dining rooms are as rare and coveted as banquettes are in restaurants. So when the owners of a 996-square-foot flat in Brooklyn tasked interior designer Abigail Marcelo with transforming an 8.5-foot-wide recess into a dining area, she recalled roosting cozily in diner booths in the city, where she was raised. “It’s comforting and womb-like. Why a circle? The trio of colors, plus white, established the home’s palette.

REUTERS/Gonzalo FuentesPARIS, Jan 24 (Reuters) - Chanel creative director Virginie Viard took a spirited direction for the French fashion house's spring haute couture show, sending models out of hulking, stylized animals crafted from cardboard and wood. They emerged, one at a time, circling the towering statues like ringmasters, in bouncy, cheerleader miniskirts, floral jumpsuits and shimmery tweed jackets. During her bow, Viard drew artist Xavier Veilhan, who designed the set, out from the risers while the audience cheered. PARIS/MILAN, Jan 13 (Reuters) - Gucci kicked off Milan fashion week on Friday with a lineup of slouchy, androgynous menswear styles, forging ahead with its latest collection while the industry waits for owner Kering (PRTP.PA) to name a new designer for the label. The question of who will steer Gucci's creative direction loomed over the megabrand's first men's show in the Italian fashion capital in three years. Events run through Jan. 17, drawing an audience that includes major retail buyers sizing up which styles might be future top sellers. Gucci held back on marketing investments during the pandemic, while larger rival LVMH's two biggest labels Louis Vuitton and Dior pushed ahead, a move that analysts say helped them gain ground on rivals. Despite the current turbulence at Kering, however, expectations are high given the group's strong track record nurturing brands, analysts say.
