Winfrey Distances Herself from Romney

Oprah Winfrey at a charity event in New York City in September. It seems that Sen. Mitt Romney (R., Utah) isn’t receiving much genuine affection from either community. Perhaps Mr. Romney, who has announced that he will not seek re-election in 2024, should consider resigning now and returning to the world of private equity where he was widely and justly and genuinely respected for outstanding achievements. It seems the final chapter of his Senate career is not going exactly as he might have hoped. Alex Weprin writes for the Hollywood Reporter:

Alice Travis was a seasoned reporter when she auditioned in 1975 for the ABC show that would become “Good Morning America.”Travis, who was then 32, had already co-hosted two major-market news shows: “Panorama” (alongside Maury Povich), in Washington D.C., and “AM New York.” The Black-owned weekly newspaper New York Amsterdam News once described her as “one of the brightest and brainiest of the undiscovered teevee personalities.”So she was unprepared for what she said a network executive told her after the audition. “‘Quite frankly your color is not to your advantage,’” Travis recounted over lunch in Manhattan this past summer. “Shocking statements, but after a while they no longer shocked.”Travis was among the first wave of Black television newswomen hired nationwide, part of an early effort to diversify American newsrooms in the wake of the protests and racial conflicts of the 1960s. While her rejection by the ABC morning show was painful, what she did next was groundbreaking: She became the first Black woman to host her own national talk show.

Somers faced some backlash for her reliance on what she’s described as a chemical-free and organic lifestyle to combat the cancers. On “Three’s Company,” she was the ditzy blonde opposite John Ritter and Joyce DeWitt in the roommate comedy. “The show’s response was, ‘Who do you think you are?’” Somers told People in 2020. Somers did reconcile with Ritter before his death, and then with DeWitt on her online talk show.

The Power to Decide How You Feel
  + stars: | 2023-09-08 | by ( Arthur C. Brooks | Oprah Winfrey | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: 1 min
Feelings, in the enterprise of your life, are like weather to a construction company. If it rains or snows or is unseasonably hot, it affects the ability to get work done. But the right response is not trying to change the weather (which would be impossible) or wishing the weather were different (which doesn’t help). It is having contingency plans in place for bad weather, being ready, and managing projects in a way that is appropriate to the conditions on a given day.

I'm living proof you don't need a certain college major to do alright in life. The question of whether your college major matters (if you even have one) is similar to the question of whether having a degree at all matters in that the answer is yes and no. When your major really mattersThere are certainly jobs that require specific degrees. But there are also plenty of jobs that don't require specific degrees. If you're like I was and wondering if your major is going to pay off in the long run, fear not.

Oprah Winfrey and Dwayne Johnson have donated $10 million to help establish a fund that will give direct cash assistance to Maui residents displaced by catastrophic wildfires that destroyed hundreds of homes on the island, they said on Thursday. The new effort, called the People’s Fund of Maui, is offering payments of $1,200 per month to adults whose homes were destroyed or made uninhabitable by the wildfires in Lahaina and Kula this month. The assistance is available to both homeowners and renters, but not to property owners who do not live in homes they own. “People being able to have their own agency, being able to make decisions for themselves about what they need and what their family needs — that’s our goal,” Ms. Winfrey added in a video on Instagram.
