WATERVILLE, Maine — A settlement that led to the dismissal of a wrongful death lawsuit hasn’t ended a criminal investigation into a toddler’s disappearance from her father’s home in Maine where blood was found more than a decade ago. But that doesn’t change the status of the criminal investigation. A 911 call in December 2011 alerted police that Ayla was not in her bed, triggering what became the state’s largest and most expensive criminal investigation. The disappearance prompted a massive search by Waterville, Maine, and state police, game wardens, and FBI agents who canvassed neighborhoods and lowered several streams. Justin DiPietro was also charged with breach of his parental duty to protect his daughter.

Speaker of the House Mike Johnson, R-La., conducts a news conference in the Capitol Visitor Center after a meeting of the House Republican Conference on Tuesday, September 10, 2024. The spending proposal would have funded the government until next March. But it also would include the so-called SAVE Act, a bill that would require people to show proof of citizenship to register as a voter. Former President Donald Trump has said that Republicans should not pass any spending plan without the SAVE Act attached. The Republican presidential nominee also said the GOP should be ready to shut down the government if the voter identification proposal is not in the spending bill.

CNN —Pressure is building on President Joe Biden, including from within his own party, to loosen the restrictions on Ukraine’s use of US-provided weapons to strike deep inside Russia. On Tuesday, the bipartisan congressional Ukraine caucus called on Biden to allow Ukraine to strike targets inside Russia with the long-range weapons. A group of key House Republican also urged Biden to ease the restrictions in a letter on Monday. On Tuesday, asked if the US will lift the restrictions, Biden answered, “we’re working that out right now.”Two US officials later told CNN that the Biden administration is not anticipating any policy changes when it comes to lifting restrictions. Asked about Trump’s comments, Sybiha, the Ukrainian foreign minister, also downplayed them.

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia Associated Press —Malaysian authorities on Wednesday rescued 402 children and arrested 171 suspects after raiding 20 welfare homes linked to an Islamic business group, in which children were exploited and sexually abused, the national police chief said. Police believed that Global Ikhwan exploited the children and used religious sentiments to collect donations, he said. Investigations showed that the children at the welfare homes belonged to members of the Global Ikhwan group, placed by their parents at the homes since they were infants, he said. The group recently also came under the radar of Islamic authorities amid claims that it was still involved with the deviant teachings of the Al-Arqam sect. Global Ikhwan, in a statement Wednesday, denied allegations that it exploited children and said that it would cooperate with authorities.

Iran has sent short-range ballistic missiles to Russia for its war against Ukraine in a “dramatic escalation” that will let Moscow strike deeper inside Ukrainian territory, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Tuesday. “Russia has now received shipments of these ballistic missiles and will likely use them within weeks in Ukraine against Ukrainians,” Blinken told reporters. “Dozens of Russian military personnel have been trained in Iran to use the Fath-360 close-range ballistic missile system, which has a maximum range of 75 miles,” he said. Confirmation from Washington that Iran is now arming Russia with sophisticated short-range ballistic missiles will likely increase pressure on the Biden administration to ease restrictions on how Ukraine can use weapons to strike at targets inside Russia. Iran has denied it is providing missiles to Russia and has called for countries to halt any weapons shipments to either side in the conflict.

WASHINGTON — Despite mounting opposition from his own party, Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., vowed Tuesday to stay the course and put his government funding package on the House floor on Wednesday. His initial strategy to avert a government shutdown at the end of the month is expected to fail and deal House Republicans an embarrassing blow. Due to their paper-thin majority, Republicans can afford only a handful of GOP defections on the vote, and many more than that have publicly voiced their opposition. “I am in this to win this,” Johnson told reporters at his weekly news conference. Afterward, the speaker added: “We are going to put the SAVE Act and the CR together, and we’re going to move that through the process.

Colorado wildlife officials said Monday that they captured and plan to relocate five members of the first pack of wolves to form under the state’s ambitious wolf reintroduction program. That wolf had been involved in repeated attacks on livestock and officials said it would have been kept in captivity if it survived. The pack formed after 10 of the predators from Oregon were released in December over bitter opposition from livestock groups. Ranching groups wanted the wolf pack killed. They said relocating pups risks their survival and wanted more done to keep the pack from killing livestock, such as using electric fencing that can better deter attacks.

CNN —US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken has called for “fundamental changes” to the way Israeli forces operate in the occupied West Bank after the killing of American activist Aysenur Ezgi Eygi at a protest last week. “No one, no one should be shot and killed for attending a protest. “Now we have the second American citizen killed at the hands of Israeli security forces. And we’ll be making that clear to the senior-most members of the Israeli government.”Blinken added that the United States had “long seen” reports of Israeli forces ignoring extremist settler violence against Palestinians and reports of excessive force by Israeli forces against Palestinians. The 26-year-old activist, who was born in Turkey, was shot while taking part in a weekly protest against an Israeli settlement near the Palestinian village of Beita.

Trump appears to have begun to slow Harris' rise, which began after President Joe Biden dropped out of the race. At the same time, Harris has abandoned many of her most progressive views that she took during her failed 2020 Democratic presidential primary run. "She's not really quite sure what she believes that's why she is pretty evasive to answering questions on policy, policy positions that she has supported in the past and supposedly what she does not support now," Wolking said. Tuesday's debate will mark the first time Harris and Trump will be in the same room together. With perhaps the exception of the Nixon-Kennedy debate, no other presidential debate will loom larger in history.

Army Secretary Christine Wormuth discussed plans at the 2024 Defense News Conference last week when she spoke on some of the potential follow-ups for longer-range artillery after the cancellation of its Extended Range Cannon Artillery program. "We still believe that we have a requirement for, you know, sort of an artillery system with that kind of range," Wormuth said. Advertisement"I think we may also be looking at sort of what we call, you know, 'innovating at the round,' looking at what can we do with the actual round to increase the range," Wormuth said recently. Washington CNN —Vice President Kamala Harris has met more than 150 world leaders since becoming vice president. Still, Harris has not always been the first phone call for foreign leaders or officials looking to get a line into the White House. For a foreign policy novice with aspirations for higher office, the war in Ukraine was a rigorous introduction to wartime diplomacy. After a summer of turmoil, Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft is finally home. The capsule undocked from the International Space Station without astronauts onboard on Friday at 6:04 p.m. Its smooth journey back suggests that the two NASA astronauts it carried to the space station could probably have flown home safely on the spacecraft. But the Starliner then remained parked at the space station for months as engineers on the ground assessed how to safely bring it back to Earth. Wilmore and Williams will remain on the space station into the new year then fly back in February on a SpaceX capsule.

On Saturday, NASA is scheduled to finally announce its decision for how two of its astronauts, who went to orbit in June on Starliner, a spacecraft built by Boeing, will come home from the International Space Station. Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore arrived at the space station on June 6. If everything during the mission had proceeded perfectly, Starliner would have been docked for just eight days. But this is a test flight for Starliner, the first with people aboard, and it was not a surprise that some problems might pop up.
