CNN —Round discs of barren dirt known as “fairy circles” look like rows of polka dots that can spread for miles over the ground. Fairy circles were previously spotted only in the arid lands of Southern Africa’s Namib Desert and the outback of Western Australia. The results showed 263 dryland locations where there were circular patterns similar to fairy circles in Namibia and Australia. Fairy circles’ mysterious originsThe study authors also compiled environmental data where circles were spotted, collecting evidence that might hint at what causes them to form. But the question “What shapes fairy circles?” is complex, and factors that create fairy circles may differ from site to site, the study authors reported.

ECB looks to AI to better understand inflation after big misses

AI (Artificial Intelligence) letters are placed on computer motherboard in this illustration taken, June 23, 2023. Joining the masses of firms already using AI, the ECB is now exploring ways to process and analyse millions of data points, including public price data, corporate statistics, news articles and bank supervisory documents to produce better analysis for policy decisions. Among several AI initiatives, the bank wants to deepen its understanding of price-setting behaviour and inflation dynamics, the blog said. Using web scraping, the ECB can collect masses of real-time price data but the figures are unstructured and unsuitable for calculating inflation. So the ECB wants to harness AI to structure data and improve its analysis, it said.

The company said it raised an additional $49 million, bringing its total round of funding to to $97 million. Taiwanese giant Foxconn , the company that assembles Apple's iPhones, and Alltek, a communications tech company, were among the investors in the round. In contrast, Kneron designs a chipset that goes into devices like consumer electronics and cars that allow AI on the "edge." "So that will force people to switch into the more low cost (NPUs)," Liu said. Elon Musk's neurotech startup Neuralink will begin recruiting patients for its first in-human clinical trial, the company announced in a blog post. Patients who participate in the trial will have to undergo invasive brain surgery. Neuralink is building a brain implant that aims to help people with severe paralysis control external technologies using only neural signals. As of September, no BCI company has managed to clinch the FDA's final seal of approval. But by receiving the go-ahead to recruit for a study with human patients, Neuralink is one step closer.

Supermicro could be set to take advantage of artificial intelligence hype, according to Barclays. The firm initiated coverage of the information technology company on Tuesday with an overweight rating and a $327 per share price target. Analyst George Wang noted that Supermicro is in an advantageous position when it comes to the emerging artificial intelligence opportunity. The analyst noted that AI inferencing, which is the process of a trained neural network model making predictions, already made up 52% of the company's second-quarter revenue. "We model SMCI's revenue growth at 17% in FY25 after 46% growth in FY24, consistent with IDC's [International Data Corporation] forecast of a 17% CAGR [compounded annual growth rate] in 2021-2026E for AI server revenue growth," Wang said.

How to Tell if Your A.I. Is Conscious

The report argues that any one of these features could, potentially, be an essential part of what it means to be conscious. And, if we’re able to discern these traits in a machine, then we might be able to consider the machine conscious. And the authors of the recent report are quick to note that theirs is not a definitive list of what makes one conscious. In principle, according to this view, a pinball machine could be conscious, if it were made much more complex. (That might mean it’s not a pinball machine anymore; let’s cross that bridge if we come to it.)

In contrast, Microsoft (MSFT.O) and Alphabet's (GOOGL.O) Google set ambitious goals for the level of transformation with their AI efforts. The Neural Engine is what Apple calls the building blocks for its chips that accelerate AI functions. The AI components of the watch chip make Siri, Apple's voice assistant, 25% more accurate. The "neural network planner" that Shroff and others were working on took a different approach. Faced with a situation, the neural network chooses a path based on what humans have done in thousands of similar situations. By early 2023, the neural network planner project had analyzed 10 million clips of video collected from the cars of Tesla customers. By mid-April 2023, it was time for Musk to try the new neural network planner. "Oh, wow," he said, "even my human neural network failed here, but the car did the right thing."

Our study suggests that both ADHD and major depressive disorder are risk factors for suicide attempt,” Freuer said in an email. Instead, “the increased risk for anorexia nervosa can be attributed entirely to ADHD,” Freuer said. Researchers looked for a link between ADHD and seven mental health conditions: anorexia nervosa, anxiety, bipolar disorder, major depression, PTSD, schizophrenia and at least one suicide attempt. “Also on the list are Tourette syndrome, obsessive compulsive disorder, depression, substance use disorders, eating disorders, learning disabilities and sleep dysfunction,” he added. Both children have the same biological disorder — ADHD — but different environments will uncover different symptoms such as anxiety or depression, Greenblatt said.

FRANKFURT, Aug 28 (Reuters) - Bayer (BAYGn.DE) said an experimental stem cell therapy developed by its U.S. subsidiary BlueRock had shown signs of easing Parkinson’s disease symptoms in an early 12-patient trial. The German drugmaker announced the trial had succeeded in a brief summary in June, saying it was a first for a stem-cell Parkinson's therapy, but held back details for a medical conference. The five participants on a lower dose experienced 0.72 hours longer per day with well-controlled symptoms on average and the time of worsening symptoms was 0.75 hours shorter per day for them. For BlueRock's experimental therapy, the researchers took human pluripotent embryonic stem cells and transformed them into dopamine-producing nerve cells. Parkinson's, for which there is no cure and which affects more than 10 million people worldwide, causes progressive brain damage.

The colossal ancient whale, which swam the seas about 39 million years ago, likely weighed two to three times more than the blue whale. To learn more about the neuroscience behind this widespread behavior, he and his colleagues played with and tickled rats and observed the rodents’ brain activity. Researchers studied how playing and being tickled affected rats’ brain activity. Key brain areaTo learn more about how playing and being tickled affect rats’ brain activity, the researchers devised a series of experiments. The researchers played “hand chasing games” with their rat subjects and gently tickled them, while tiny, wireless neural probes recorded the rats’ brain activity. Furthermore, in trials where the scientists inhibited activity in this part of the brain, the rats were less inclined to play or laugh when tickled.

July 19 (Reuters) - Australia's BrainChip Holdings Ltd (BRN.AX) surged nearly 11% to mark its best day in six weeks after the advanced artificial intelligence chipmaker received a patent grant in the United States on one of its neuromorphic processors. Neuromorphic processors mimic the way the brain works and allow devices to use signals from physical neurons to carry out computations. The patent protects the neural processor's feature of reconfigurability, which "provides a significant advantage, enabling the development of multipurpose and cost-effective hardware designs", BrainChip said. BrainChip now has 17 issued patents, with around 30 patent applications pending in the United States, Europe, Australia, Canada, Japan, Korea, India, among others.
