In an interview with CNBC last week, WK Kellogg CEO Pilnick said the company was advertising cereal for dinner to consumers looking for more affordable options. CNBC host Carl Quintanilla asked Pilnick if encouraging weary customers to eat cereal for dinner could “land the wrong way.”Pilnick thought the opposite. Cereal prices alone increased 28% since January of 2020, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Food brands under fireDespite the CEO’s assurances, Kellogg’s advertisement and Pilnick’s comments have led to a backlash on social media. They note that boxes of popular cereals now cost more than $7 and cereal is not an adequate substitution for a full dinner.

New York CNN —The Federal Trade Commission on Monday sued to block the $25 billion deal between Kroger and Albertsons, alleging the largest supermarket merger in US history would lead to higher prices for consumers. The merger, announced in 2022, sought to combine the fifth and tenth largest retailers in the country. “This supermarket mega merger comes as American consumers have seen the cost of groceries rise steadily over the past few years. With the FTC’s blessing, Haggen, a small supermarket chain in the Northwest with just 18 locations, bought 146 of the former Albertsons and Safeway stores. She criticized the FTC’s handling of Albertsons’ deal with Safeway, pointing to it as a prime example of the limitations of divestitures.

New York CNN —Macy’s rejected an unsolicited $6 billion bid from an activist investor to take the famed department store private last month. Now, the activist group is taking another shot at Macy’s, launching a proxy fight to take control of the board. Last month, Macy’s announced it was laying off about 3.5% of its workforce, or roughly 2,350 employees. Macy’s said Tuesday it will evaluate Arkhouse’s proposed board candidates, but criticized Arkhouse and another activist investor, Brigade, in a statement. Arkhouse did not publicly disclose its plans for Macy’s, but analysts believed it would sell off Macy’s valuable real estate and perhaps take other actions, such as spinning off its e-commerce business.

New York CNN —Home Depot, a bellwether of the housing market and US economy, said sales dropped over the winter and it’s a expecting a slow 2024. Sales at stores open for at least one year fell 3.5% last quarter, and Home Depot projects that sales will continue to decline 1% in 2024. “2023 was a year of moderation,” Home Depot CEO Ted Decker said in a news release Tuesday. Demand for home improvement has fallen due to high mortgage rates and a slowdown in new home construction. “One of the main issues [for Home Depot] continues to be a very sluggish housing market,” Neil Saunders, an analyst at GlobalData Retail, said in a note to clients Tuesday.

Why Walmart is buying Vizio
  + stars: | 2024-02-20 | by ( Nathaniel Meyersohn | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +3 min
Walmart announced Tuesday that it’s buying TV maker Vizio for $2.3 billion to shore up its advertising business and create a more potent rival to Amazon’s booming ad business. The deal would give Walmart more ways to offer ads through Vizio televisions, as well as create entertainment options exclusively for customers with Vizio TVs. “We also believe it enables a profitable advertising business that is rapidly scaling,” Walmart US chief revenue officer Seth Dallaire said in a news release Tuesday. Walmart wants to move into the lucrative advertising space to supplement its low-margin retail business. Its advertising business reached $3.4 billion last year, but makes up less than 1% of its total sales.

Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, home of the Super Bowl, is the third smallest NFL stadium. By Kirsty NeedhamSYDNEY (Reuters) - Pacific Islands nations that want to connect to U.S.-funded undersea cables will need to secure their digital ecosystems to guard against data risks from China, a senior U.S. State Department official said. The United States pledged last year to jointly fund two undersea cables, to be built by Google, connecting the U.S. territory of Guam with hubs in Fiji and French Polynesia, and further branching out across remote Pacific Islands. The proposed intra-Pacific cable project has offered to branch out to Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Tuvalu, Fiji, Nauru, Marshall Islands, Kiribati, Cook Islands, Wallis and Futuna and the Federated States of Micronesia. China and the U.S. are jostling for influence in the Pacific Islands with competing offers for infrastructure. The Solomon Islands, which struck a security pact with Beijing, is rolling out a Chinese-funded mobile network built by Chinese telecommunications company Huawei.

The study comes as some companies remove self-checkout machines and others adjust their self-checkout operations. Regular checkout also makes customers feel that they are receiving the service they are entitled to as customers of that store, the study found. “The saved effort during the checkout process and the customers’ sense of entitlement explain the effect of checkout type on customer loyalty,” the study said. Self-checkout, on the other hand, shifts the work to customers, making them feel less rewarded, the study found. At a handful of stores, Target has restricted self-checkout to customers buying 10 items or fewer.

New York CNN —Macy’s has rejected a $5.8 billion offer to take the 165-year-old retailer private, announcing late Sunday that the “unsolicited proposal lacks compelling value.”Last month, Arkhouse Management, a real estate-focused investing firm, and Brigade Capital Management, a global asset manager, offered to buy the remaining Macy’s shares it doesn’t own at a 32% premium. The company first opened in 1858 and now operates about 500 Macy’s branded stores, as well as 55 of the more upscale Bloomingdale’s chain. Macy’s has attempted numerous strategies in recent years to revitalize its business, such as new brands and smaller stores, but the moves have not altered its long-term trajectory. Its stock price has dropped 75% from a peak of $73 a share in 2015. Since then, it has closed nearly 300 stores — almost one-third — leaving about 700 across its brands.

New York CNN —In America, traveling through red lights on right turns has become a rule of the road. States introduced it as a gas-savings measure: The theory was that it would reduce idling at red lights. Right-on-red was a gas-savings tool during the 1970s oil crisis. There has been little national research in recent years on the effect of right-on-red turns on pedestrian safety. Banning right on red is not a “panacea for pedestrian safety problems,” Dumbaugh said, but could help prevent pedestrian and car accidents in busy intersections.
