But one country has just triumphed over all the rest in the Decanter World Wine Awards 2023, the world’s biggest and most established wine competition, now in its 20th year. It was a victory for the New World as 10 Australian wines were named Best in Show, more than any other country. Italy had seven Best in Shows – all reds from Tuscany and Piedmont – while Portugal (three Best in Shows) – excelled in Port and Madeira. It’s Croatia – Slovenia makes wonderful wines, really really good – Slovakia, all around there.”Judges at the awards tasted up to 90 wines a day. South African authorities confirmed that foreign ministers from Brazil, Russia, India, and South Africa are attending Thursday's meeting in Cape Town. Amid the growing geopolitical polarisation resulting from the war in Ukraine, BRICS leaders have said they are open to admitting new members, including oil producing countries. South Africa, though the bloc's smallest member, is among its biggest champions. As an ICC member South Africa would face pressure to arrest Putin, were he to attend the meeting in Johannesburg. LAKE CHARLES, La., May 18 (Reuters) - In Washington, Republican U.S. Representative Clay Higgins has been a vocal advocate for spending cuts. As a member of the hard-right Freedom Caucus, Higgins was an early advocate for dramatic spending cuts, many of which ended up in the House bill. He hopes the spending cuts backed by Higgins won't affect local efforts to provide affordable housing. When it comes to spending, Higgins has been a solid "no" in Washington. For some local residents, Higgins' push for spending cuts in the face of so much need remains incomprehensible.

Eastern Ukraine CNN —As their country fights to repel Russia’s forces, Ukrainian women are taking on roles and responsibilities previously unavailable to them, often in challenging and dangerous circumstances. How did you tell the story of Queen Charlotte’s character development through her costumes? There was a Met Ball about 10 years ago based on the work of the designer Charles James, who I’m obsessed with. Queen Charlotte’s elaborate wigs, and the depiction of her hair as a Black monarch, have been praised since the first season of “Bridgerton.” Tell me about the decision for young Charlotte to wear her natural hair. The original sketches that we did for Queen Charlotte, before any of the casting process was done, had her with big, natural, curly hair. She had said, “Do you think we can do this?” So she and Shonda spoke and decided to do it.
More than 11,000 film and television writers, who say their compensation doesn't match the revenue generated in the streaming era, are on strike for the first time since 2008. Since then, a number of notable films and shows have halted or wrapped production early, including Netflix's "Stanger Things," Disney and Marvel's "Blade," AppleTV+'s "Severance" and Paramount's "Evil." Beyond the delayed production, and likely delayed releases, of these titles, industry experts worry the work pause could have a financial toll greater than that of the previous writers' strike. A number of productions with finished scripts, like Amazon's "The Rings of Power," have decided to continue filming without writers or showrunners on set. "While we're excited to start production with our amazing cast and crew, it is not possible during this strike.

But Cooper and Hizli wanted to portray the darker side of female friendship, too. Cooper described past intense friendships “that felt like toxic relationships I’d had with boyfriends,” including a best friend who Cooper said was secretly sleeping with her boyfriend at the time. Cooper described Kerry Mucklowe, the character she plays in “This Country,” as someone who knows exactly who she is. Reaching for her vape, Cooper seemed more muted than either of those characters, and described herself as an anxious person these days. She had always acknowledged her faults to make other people laugh, Cooper said, and growing up she aspired to be like TV comedians who gave her parents “moments of complete escapism” from their financial struggles.

CNN —Think Dracula and the cape, the fangs and bloodlust come to mind. Nic Cage thought Dracula and saw Anne Bancroft in “The Graduate.”That’s according to Nicholas Hoult, who plays the titular servant to Dracula in “Renfield,” a new take on Bram Stoker’s characters. “I don’t think it gets more iconic than Nic Cage playing Dracula,” Hoult told CNN. Dracula is a character that requires an actor to go big or go home – and with good reason. “Nic Cage describes this idea of love in exile, and Dracula being someone who’s in extreme pain, because he has to watch everyone that he loves die,” said Hoult.

Sweetgreen 's stock fell 10% in morning trading Wednesday after Chipotle Mexican Grill filed a lawsuit against the salad chain alleging trademark infringement over its new "Chipotle Chicken Burrito Bowl." Chipotle filed the suit in California federal court Tuesday, less than a week after Sweetgreen launched the menu item. Chipotle said in its complaint that it sent Sweetgreen a cease and desist notice and asked the company to drop "chipotle" from the name when it heard about the Chipotle Chicken Burrito Bowl, but Sweetgreen never responded. Sweetgreen's website features the product name larger than any other identifying feature that ties it back to Sweetgreen, Chipotle argues in the complaint. In addition to asking the court for an injunction against Sweetgreen, Chipotle is also asking for the profits that Sweetgreen earns from the Chipotle Chicken Burrito Bowl.

Nigeria’s Election Puts a Troubled Democracy to the Test
  + stars: | 2023-02-21 | by ( Nic Cheeseman | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: +1 min
On Feb. 25, Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country and largest oil producer is due to elect a new president. Criminal activity, such as thefts and kidnappings for ransom, is on the rise. Now a major currency crisis that erupted in January has resulted in protests, fights and attacks on banks. Under the circumstances, the last thing Nigeria’s 220 million people need is an election marred by manipulation or violence. But this prospect is becoming increasingly likely as the political temperature rises and cash shortages threaten to undermine the capacity of the country’s electoral commission to administer the vote.
