REUTERS/Kevin WurmAug 2 (Reuters) - The United States and Mongolia will sign an "Open Skies" civil aviation agreement, Vice President Kamala Harris and Mongolian Prime Minister L. Oyun-Erdene said on Wednesday at the start of discussions focused on Russia, China and economic development. Washington has Open Skies civil aviation agreements with more than 130 countries. The Open Skies deal between the U.S. and Mongolia will build on a memorandum of understanding for an air transport agreement reached in January. Mongolia's national carrier, MIAT Mongolian Airlines, flies to Europe and Asia but not the United States at present. Although passenger demand may not merit nonstop flights between the Mongolian capital, Ulaanbaatar, and the U.S., the Open Skies deal would also provide easier options for cargo flights between the nations.

CNN —At least ten people are dead and one still trapped following the collapse of a middle school gymnasium roof in China’s northeastern city of Qiqihar Sunday afternoon, Chinese state media CCTV reported. Four escaped and fifteen were trapped at the time, according to the municipal search and rescue headquarters. A preliminary investigation suggests the collapse may have been caused by misplaced construction material called perlite that was left on the gym roof during construction work on an adjacent building. The material gained weight after being soaked in water brought by rainfall and led to the collapse, according to the preliminary investigation. Safety incidents are not uncommon in China and the accident follows a string of tragedies that have been linked to lax safety standards in recent months.

BEIJING, July 7 (Reuters) - Mongolia has granted two licences for Elon Musk's SpaceX to operate as an internet service provider using low-orbit satellites, the government said on Friday. Millions of internet users in Mongolia will be able to access high-speed connection via Starlink, the satellite communications service operated by SpaceX, the government said in a statement. Starlink has built a fast-growing network of more than 3,500 satellites in low-Earth orbit that can provide connectivity in remote areas. Formal cooperation between the Mongolian government and SpaceX was initiated in February during the 2023 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Resource-rich Mongolia has extensive deposits of rare earth minerals and copper, which are critical materials in the electric vehicle supply chain.

July 5 (Reuters) - Russia accused a small U.S.-based charity on Wednesday of "sabotaging" the construction of a huge gas pipeline to China and banned it as an "undesirable organisation". Jennifer Castner, director of the Altai Project, described the accusation as absurd but said it had been only a matter of time. The Russian prosecutor general's office said that while claiming to advocate nature conservation, the Altai Project was meddling in Russia's internal affairs and could damage its economic security. "The key direction of the organisation's work is sabotaging the construction of the Power of Siberia-2 gas pipeline," it said. The planned pipeline is intended to deliver 50 billion cubic metres of natural gas per year from Russia to China via Mongolia.

BEIJING, June 22 (Reuters) - Beijing on Thursday issued its second-most severe warning for high temperatures that are expected to persist through the weekend as northern China battled another round of heatwaves in a week. The Chinese capital raised an orange alert, warning temperatures could rise as high as 39 Celsius (102 Fahrenheit) in most parts of the city from Thursday to Saturday. Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei and Shandong in northern China were hammered by heatwaves last week, prompting local authorities to step up efforts to safeguard crops, ensure the safety of tourists, and suspend outdoor work during the hottest part of the day. China has a four-tier, colour-coded weather warning system, with red the most severe, followed by orange, yellow and blue. An orange alert is issued when the maximum temperature exceeds 40 Celsius in a single day, or the maximum temperature remains above 37 Celsius for two consecutive days.
