Last week, it looked like Google was poised to snap up the cybersecurity start-up Wiz for $23 billion, in what would have been its largest acquisition ever. The privately held company would instead pursue a public listing on a stock exchange, according to a memo viewed by The New York Times. Wiz would continue to pursue its previously stated goal of generating $1 billion in recurring revenue ahead of an initial public offering, Assaf Rappaport, Wiz’s chief executive, wrote in the memo. “While we are flattered by offers we have received, we have chosen to continue on our path to building Wiz,” he wrote. “Saying no to such humbling offers is tough, but with our exceptional team, I feel confident in making that choice.”

Amber Rose, an OnlyFans model, influencer and former girlfriend to rappers, took the stage at the Republican National Convention on Monday night sporting her platinum buzz cut and face tattoo. Ms. Rose, the author of a book titled “How to Be a Bad Bitch,” told the overwhelmingly white crowd that she once believed “left-wing propaganda that Donald Trump was a racist.” But now, she said, she had “put the red hat on, too.”“These are my people,” she said. “This is where I belong.”As if to underscore the point, Ms. Rose appeared on the giant screens at the convention hall again the next night. This time it was in a music video for “Trump Trump Baby,” a remix of Vanilla Ice’s 1990s hit, “Ice Ice Baby,” performed by Forgiato Blow, a self-described MAGA rapper. Ms. Rose wore a hefty gold chain with a medallion of Mr. Trump’s face.

Four years ago the Republican convention was a bizarre spectacle, a cross between a Napoleonic fantasy and a Leni Riefenstahl movie. The dominant image was of an imperial dynasty laying claim to forever rule. As for the shooting, it had been instantly mythologized as a miracle of survival: Speaker after speaker, including Trump himself, credited the Almighty with saving the former president so he could save America. There was no reference to the speculation, multiplying across the internet, that the deep state was behind the assassination attempt. Even Donald Trump was, by his standards, cogent and calm.

New York CNN —Gas prices could soon soar across the Chicago metropolitan area after a tornado narrowly missed a major ExxonMobil refinery outside of Chicago Monday night, knocking out power to the facility. The refinery, know as ExxonMobil’s Joliet Refinery, is located in neighboring Channahon, Illinois. The line of storms that hit the area Monday night produced 11 tornadoes in the greater Chicago area, including the one that hit Channahon, according to the National Weather Service. It will take a few days to return the Joliet refinery to normal production, assuming no damage occurred beyond the power outage, Lipow said. The the Chicago area is already at $4.07 a gallon, according to AAA, but that average price, based on Tuesday’s prices, was down 1 cent from the previous day.

Thousands of Trump supporters in Milwaukee on Monday night hailed their leader, elevating him from MAGA superhero to saint-like status. For Trump’s millions of American fans, Monday night was a validation of their faith in God and the ex-president and the righteousness of his mission. A list of Black Republican and female Republican lawmakers gave speeches, offering a somewhat misleading perception that the GOP has a deep and diverse bench. One GOP source said speechwriters at the convention had thrown out all their pre-written material for the week’s top speakers and started again. The ex-president has a new chance at politics and life in the wake of his assassination attempt.

“It’s about time,” he said, adding the Vances “are going to represent a new generation of Americans.”The 2024 presidential campaign has seen three politicians of South Asian descent vying for the White House: Former South Carolina Gov. Since 2020, according to Pew, the number of eligible Asian American voters has increased by 2 million – roughly the population of Nebraska. According to the Asian American voter survey, the economy, education, inflation and immigration were “highly important” for Asian Americans this election cycle. Kumar said immigration is top of mind for many South Asian Republican voters because of the backlog facing millions of Hindu and Indian Americans who are waiting for green cards. Not since he descended the golden escalator at the start of his first presidential campaign has Donald J. Trump made an entrance as memorable as Monday night’s. A gauzy bandage covered his ear, and his slow and purposeful walk across the convention hall was filmed in the style of a boxer entering an arena. Just as he had mouthed “fight” in the moment after the assassination attempt, the delegates on the floor chanted “fight! fight!” But Mr. Trump did not look to be in a fighting mood. He appeared to choke up.

The United States is experiencing scorching new levels of heat fueled by climate change this summer, with dozens of people dying in the West, millions sweating under heat advisories and nearly three-quarters of Americans saying the government must prioritize global warming. But as the Republican Party opens its national convention in Milwaukee with a prime-time focus on energy on Monday night, the party has no plan to address climate change. While some Republicans no longer deny the overwhelming scientific consensus that the planet is warming because of human activity, party leaders do not see it as a problem that needs to be addressed. “I don’t know that there is a Republican approach to climate change as an organizing issue,” said Thomas J. Pyle, president of the American Energy Alliance, a conservative research group focused on energy. “I don’t think President Trump sees reducing greenhouse gases, using the government to do so, as an imperative.”
