Looking at a different measure, median real wages — wages adjusted for inflation — have barely budged, growing at just 0.8% over the last year, as of August 2024. With wage growth cooling, the gap between wages and inflation isn't expected to close until the second quarter of 2025, according to Bankrate's projections. Leisure and hospitality workers saw wage growth of 23.7%, which is above the overall average of 17.4%. In contrast, education workers have slipped further behind, with wage gains of only 13.6% over the past three years. The Fed is widely expected to announce its first interest rate cut in more than three years this week.

As investors are navigating all the buzz about this week's potential rate cut and the upcoming presidential election, JPMorgan is forecasting a serious risk to long-term stock returns. The market appears to be too expensive relative to history, according to the firm, which is projecting a 5.7% annual return from the S & P 500 over the next decade. Stocks in the firm's coverage universe have "significantly front-loaded expected rate cut benefits, well in excess of prior fed cycles," he said. The chances of a smaller 25 basis point cut have fallen to a 41% chance. Barclays analyst Matthew Bouley is watching the data very closely as well and said a lot will depend on how consumers react as mortgage rates fall. Bouley said this is one of the clearest signs yet that a recent decline in mortgage rates is bringing buyers into the market. The hearing which will decide whether Manchester City broke 115* of the Premier League’s financial rules begins today (Monday) in London. It has been a long time coming — over 18 months since the Premier League announced its investigation had escalated into charges in February 2023. This is The Athletic’s guide to the 115* alleged charges (yes, we will explain the asterisk). AdvertisementIf the commission finds on “the balance of probabilities” that this was not the case, City will be found guilty. Should the Premier League rules be shown to be unlawful, their argument that City have broken those rules is significantly weakened.

The S & P 500 is on the verge of something unexpected — especially for September. The broad market index entered the week less than 1% below a record last reached in July. Krinky isn't the only one on the Street treading carefully with the S & P 500 near record highs. "With the S & P 500 close to our YE 2024 price target again, we remain neutral on the S & P 500 for now," wrote Lori Calvasina, head of global equity research at RBC Capital Markets. Asian markets were set to open mixed Monday as investors digested the downbeat economic data from China released over the weekend, while several key markets were closed for holidays. Investors also await the Federal Reserve's policy meeting on Tuesday and Wednesday where the central bankers are expected to make their first interest rate cut since 2020. China released a slew of worrying economic data, with August factory output, retail sales and investment numbers missing expectations. Urban jobless rate rose to a six-month high while year-on-year home prices fell at the fastest pace in nine years. Reaction to China's disappointing economic data will be likely seen in the Hong Kong market.

The AI boom will nearly double demand for copper, mining firm BHP told the Financial Times. Copper is a necessary material for electrification, and AI data centers will require power capacity to expand. Chief Financial Officer Vandita Pant told the Financial Times that AI data centers will account for 6% to 7% of copper demand by 2050. These conditions caused copper prices to peak to a record high in May, though China's economic tumble has helped deflate prices to $9,207 a ton. Previously, the bank also considered copper prices to benefit from the expansion of AI data centers.

New York CNN —Intel’s struggling chip-making business got a boost Monday from a high-profile client: Amazon. Intel Foundry and Amazon Web Services will coinvest in a custom chip design for the latter and “announced a multi-year, multi-billion-dollar framework,” according to a release. “Specifically, Intel Foundry will produce an AI fabric chip for AWS on Intel 18A,” Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger said in the statement Monday. The new deal, along with a $3 billion grant from the US government to boost domestic chip making and make chips for the US military, “demonstrates the continued progress we are making to build a world-class foundry business,” Intel said in the statement. Intel has changed its business model to try to become a global chip manufacturer to rival Taiwan’s TSMC.

They donned new SpaceX spacesuits that had never been tested in orbit, opened their ship to the vacuum of space, and conducted the first-ever commercial spacewalk. On top of that, they exposed themselves to high levels of space radiation, much higher than what astronauts aboard the International Space Station undergo in the same time period. People traveling to Mars would be exposed to immense amounts of space radiation for months. So the Crew Dragon spacecraft flew through two donuts of intense radiation surrounding Earth, called the Van Allen belts.

Goldman Sachs suspects that a reversal is coming as mid-cap earnings top those of large caps. And while small caps should post even higher earnings growth next year, that cohort is filled with unprofitable companies, Ma noted. "Low-quality segments of the market, such as small caps, will likely remain pressured at these levels due to weak balance sheets and low profitability." Below are 25 mid-cap stocks in the S&P 400 that Goldman Sachs spotlighted due to their solid balance sheets, double-digit expected earnings growth for 2025, above-average sales growth, and cheap valuations based on their forward earnings multiple versus their five-year median.

New York CNN —Mostly large US corporations are projecting an average increase in their base pay budgets of 3.9% for next year, according to a new survey of 300 compensation leaders across 11 major industries from The Conference Board. That is lower than the 4.4% average increase they paid out in 2023, which marked a 20-year high for base pay raises. But it is a tick up from the 3.8% bump that companies were paying out this year, according to The Conference Board. Base pay budget increases are typically viewed as a proxy for the average raises employees may receive. Actual base pay increases next year may be different if economic and business conditions change.

The market's turn toward treating good economic news as positive for stocks is pictured here in a chart from Citi strategists, showing the three-month correlation between the S & P 500 and the Citi U.S. Economic Surprise index has turned sharply higher. The S & P 500's low for the week was Wednesday morning, right at the 5400 level where it previously hit a low a week ago Friday after a tepid employment report. Forward 12-month S & P 500 earnings forecasts continue to rise smartly, now approaching $270. But, thanks to the past two months of sideways churn, that's down from 21.7 when the S & P first hit its current level in July. And the rally last week could well have front-run any potential positive inference from the Fed's move next week.
