June 6 (Reuters) - Salesforce Inc (CRM.N) CEO Marc Benioff has shuffled the top management, a person familiar with the matter told Reuters on Tuesday, a move that follows after the software company reported its slowest quarterly revenue growth since 2010. Miguel Milano has been appointed as the chief revenue officer, the source said, adding that Ariel Kelman will take over as Salesforce's chief marketing officer. June 5 (Reuters) - Snap Inc (SNAP.N) said on Monday it hired a new senior vice president of engineering from Google, the latest in a string of new recruits to advance its advertising business. Eric Young, who was previously vice president of engineering for Alphabet Inc's (GOOGL.O) Google Cloud, will oversee the core infrastructure for Snap, which owns the popular photo messaging app Snapchat. While Snap has consistently expanded its audience for Snapchat, which now has 750 million monthly users, the company has struggled to generate revenue at the same pace. While at Google, Young worked on building the tech infrastructure for products like search, ads and YouTube. His appointment at Snap comes after the company hired Rob Wilk, former head of advertising at Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O), to become president of the Americas region, as well as another Google executive to lead revenue product.

BRUSSELS, June 3 (Reuters) - A majority of EU countries have rejected a push by Europe's big telecoms operators to force Big Tech to help fund the rollout of 5G and broadband in the region, people familiar with the matter said. Telecoms ministers from 18 countries either rejected or criticised the proposed network fee levy on tech firms at a meeting with EU industry chief Thierry Breton in Luxembourg on Thursday, the sources said. That echoed comments made last month by EU telecoms regulators' group BEREC. Breton is expected to issue a report by the end of June with a summary of feedback provided by Big Tech, telecoms providers and others which will indicate his next steps. Any legislative proposal needs to be negotiated with EU countries and EU lawmakers before it can become law.

SentinelOne's disappointing forecast slams shares

Shares of the company sank 37% before the bell on Friday and were set to open at their lowest level in about six months. The stock could erase most of the 42% rise it has posted so far this year, if losses hold through regular trading. The median price target on the stock is now $18, which is 13% lower than its last closing price. Factors other than a weak economy seem to be impacting SentinelOne, said BTIG analysts, downgrading the stock to "neutral". Some brokerages pointed to competitive pressure from the likes of Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O) and larger peer CrowdStrike Holdings Inc (CRWD.O).

ROME, June 1 (Reuters) - An Italian senator has surprised his colleagues by reading out in parliament a speech drafted by a chatbot, saying afterwards that he pulled the stunt to stir "a serious debate" on risks and opportunities posed by artificial intelligence. "How many of us today are able to distinguish between a text produced by human intelligence and a stream of thoughts ... produced by an artificial intelligence algorithm?" His speech, on the subject of various bilateral deals with Switzerland, was produced by Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O)-backed OpenAI's GPT-4 chatbot, the senator told Reuters on Thursday. BRUSSELS, June 1 (Reuters) - The Dutch government has stepped up its criticism of a push by EU telecoms operators to get Big Tech to help pay for the rollout of 5G and broadband, saying claims that unchecked data growth has pushed up network costs are not backed by facts. "In reality, contrary to all these persistent claims, the strong growth of Internet data in the past did not confront large telecom operators with higher network costs," the paper seen by Reuters said. "In reality the total network costs have remained constant despite the consistently high growth over the last decades, whilst the profit margins of European telecom operators have improved significantly over the last decade," the paper said. They said direct payments are unjustified as end-users already pay for their access line including network traffic costs while such intervention would affect the functioning of the internet. "The synergies for such cross-border mergers to telecom operators are generally considered relatively limited, whilst there don’t seem to be convincing benefits to wider society."

MELBOURNE, May 30 (Reuters) - BHP Group (BHP.AX) has teamed up with Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O) to improve copper recovery from its Escondida mine in Chile, the world's biggest copper mine, by using machine learning and artificial intelligence, it said on Tuesday. BHP estimates the world needs to double the amount of copper produced over the next 30 years to keep pace with the development of decarbonisation technology such as electric vehicles, offshore wind and solar farms. "We expect the next big wave in mining to come from the advanced use of digital technologies" BHP Chief Technical Officer Laura Tyler said in the company statement. Using real-time data from plants that process ore in combination with AI-based recommendations from Microsoft’s Azure platform, plant operators will have the ability to adjust variables that affect ore processing and grade recovery, BHP said. BHP, the world's biggest miner, is the majority owner of Escondida and operates the mine with partners Rio Tinto (RIO.AX), and Japan's JECO Corp. Escondida produced more than 1 million tonnes of copper during the last financial year ending in June.

For some of the largest tech companies, cloud services and data center businesses have been among the biggest growth drivers, including during the pandemic as people worked from home. Its revenue for the quarter ended April 30 was $6.97 billion, compared with analysts' average expectations of $7.31 billion, according to Refinitiv data. Quarterly sales for the company's compute segment fell 8%, while the storage segment recorded a 3% decline. AI means everyone can now be a programmer, Nvidia chief says

Nvidia has surged to become the world's most valuable listed semiconductor company as a major supplier of chips and computing systems for artificial intelligence. "Every single computing era you could do different things that weren't possible before, and artificial intelligence certainly qualifies," Huang added. Everyone is a programmer now - you just have to say something to the computer," he said. Huang demonstrated what AI could do, including getting a programme to write a short pop song praising Nvidia with only a few words of instruction. Nvidia has strained to meet demand for its AI chips, with Tesla Inc TSLA.O CEO Elon Musk, who is reportedly building out an artificial-intelligence startup, last week telling an interviewer that the graphics processing units (GPUs) are "considerably harder to get than drugs".

Marvell's shares get AI boost a day after Nvidia's surge
  + stars: | 2023-05-26 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
May 26 (Reuters) - Shares of Marvell Technology soared about 23% on Friday after the chipmaker became the latest to project a big surge in revenue from the AI boom, days after larger peer Nvidia Corp (NVDA.O) signaled the huge potential for the technology. The gains were set to add nearly $10 billion to Marvell's market value as investors chase exposure to AI to counter weakness in many technology companies' traditional services and products. At least 17 brokerages raised their price targets on Marvell, taking the median price target to $65, implying a 31% upside to the stock's last close. The brokerage expects a demand boost from areas such as 5G, auto and AI-based products to offset weakness in enterprise networking, wired carrier and legacy data centers. Major cloud computing players Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O) and Alphabet Inc (GOOGL.O) are adding the latest AI technology to their products in hopes of boosting demand at a time the weak economy has been a drag on their growth.
