Ron DeSantis had put “politics ahead of his job” by declining to meet with President Joe Biden during the Democrat's weekend visit to survey Hurricane Idalia's damage in DeSantis' state. And unfortunately, he put politics ahead of his job," Christie said. Christie giving a warm greeting to Democratic President Barack Obama during a visit after Superstorm Sandy in 2012 earned Christie scorn among national Republicans. Christie said he was simply doing his job by meeting with the president. But DeSantis is now running for president and hoping to take on Biden in the 2024 general election.

The mechanism gives investors in CCS certainty about their future revenue by setting a minimum price for their carbon credits. Oil companies in the country's highest-emitting sector are counting on CCS to help dramatically cut emissions while continuing to pump oil and gas. Carbon credits represent reduced or avoided carbon emissions, and companies use them to mitigate greenhouse gases they generate. There are 64 million people globally living with heart failure, Novo Nordisk said in a statement about the trial results. This type of heart failure accounts for more than half of all cases in the US and is increasing in prevalence, according to Kosiborod and his co-authors. He noted that 80% of patients with this kind of heart failure in the US have obesity or are characterized as overweight. Until recently, the main treatment options for people with this kind of heart failure were diuretics, sometimes called water pills, Kosiborod said. They’re also changing the way researchers think about obesity, and the results in heart failure contribute to that paradigm shift, Kosiborod said.

Charlie Neibergall, Meg Kinnard | APFormer President Donald Trump holds a double-digit lead over his closest rival, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis in a major new poll of likely Republican caucusgoers in Iowa released Monday. Trump garnered the support of 42% of respondents, while DeSantis came in second with 19%. In an overture to Iowa voters, Trump also asserted without evidence that he "saved" ethanol and popular entitlement programs. While Trump and DeSantis share a similar overall approval in the state — 63% for Trump and 61% for DeSantis — the Florida governor's support appears to be much shakier than the former president's.

CNN —The weight loss drug Wegovy was shown to reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke or heart disease-related death by 20% in a major clinical trial in people with cardiovascular disease, the first to show a weight loss drug alone can have such protective effects. It called the five-year trial “Select.”The finding of a 20% reduction in heart risk is higher than many experts had anticipated. A similar trial for the type 2 diabetes drug Ozempic, which uses the same ingredient, semaglutide, previously showed it could reduce cardiovascular risk by 26% — but no trial had yet shown a risk reduction in people without diabetes. It said it will present detailed results from the trial at a scientific conference later this year. It’s awaiting US Food and Drug Administration approval for weight loss as well.

LONDON, July 28 (Reuters) - UK authorities said on Friday they were investigating defence ministry emails that were mistakenly sent to the wrong recipient, after reports that messages intended for U.S. military intelligence ended up with Russian ally Mali. Ministry of Defence officials were trying to contact the Pentagon, whose domain name is ".mil", but accidentally sent the mails to Mali, which has the domain name ".ml", the Times newspaper reported. Britain said the information that was mistakenly shared was not highly sensitive. "We have opened an investigation after a small number of emails were mistakenly forwarded to an incorrect email domain," a spokesperson for the Ministry of Defence (MoD) said, without confirming the domain's name. "All sensitive information is shared on systems designed to minimise the risk of misdirection," the spokesperson said.

DON’T LOOK AT ME LIKE THAT, by Diana AthillTwenty-three years ago, Diana Athill wrote “Stet,” a memoir of her life as an editor in which she outlined the pleasures of her profession. And she did a good bit of gift-wrapping herself: In her long life Athill published no fewer than 10 memoirs, two collections of short stories and, in 1967, “Don’t Look at Me Like That,” her only novel. By the time of its writing, she already had her first autobiography, “Instead of a Letter,” under her belt. Although the novel is set primarily in the 1950s — its protagonist, Meg Bailey, is some years younger than her creator — Athill and her heroine share a similar social status (both had titled grandfathers) and an artistic London milieu. “They buttoned over the chest, had an obscene vent between the legs and were very warm.”

CNN —The US Food and Drug Administration has approved the oral contraceptive Opill for over-the-counter use, making it the first nonprescription birth control pill in the United States, but it will be months before it’s available. The typical combination birth control pill, the most commonly used form of oral contraception, uses both hormones to prevent pregnancy. “People use birth control for things outside of preventing pregnancy like [polycystic ovary syndrome], treating heavy periods, painful periods,” she said. “There’s a lot of uses for it outside of birth control that people also will benefit if they can get it over the counter.”Who can use Opill? It was shown in May and in fuller Phase 3 clinical trial results released at the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference on Monday to delay the disease’s progression. More than 6 million Americans are estimated to have Alzheimer’s disease, with about 1 million estimated to be in the early symptomatic stages where these drugs have shown benefit. Both Leqembi and donanemab work by clearing buildups of a protein in the brain called amyloid, a hallmark of Alzheimer’s. Potential buyers and sellers are also being deterred by the long wait for deal approvals by regulators, the experts said. The uncertainty over capital rules has created a "chilling effect" that could put a lid on mergers, while rising interest rates and a looming economic downturn could also damp activity, Adams said. That compares to $3.9 billion in bank deals for non-stressed institutions, the lowest seen over the first half of a year since 2010. "Instead of evaluating mergers based on competition and the needs of the community, political factors have become too important," she said. Regional banks will "have incentives to merge and reach larger scale since they will be subject to more regulatory scrutiny and capital,” Johnson said.

Britain lagging in delivery of new hospitals, watchdog says

The National Audit Office (NAO) said only 32 of 40 hospitals promised by former PM Boris Johnson were due to be completed on schedule by 2030. "Delivery so far has been slower than expected," said Gareth Davies, the head of the non-partisan NAO. The promise of 40 new hospitals in England by 2030 has been criticised as some of the proposals were for renovations of existing hospitals. Including those projects, there would be 40 new hospitals by the end of the decade, a health ministry spokesperson said. "Patients and clinicians are going to have to wait much longer than they expected before their new hospitals are completed."
