Greenpeace activists scaled Deutsche Bank's headquarters shortly after dawn and strung up a large yellow banner to protest against the climate investment policies of the German lender and its asset management company DWS. The protests highlight the ongoing tension between climate activists and financial firms. Mauricio Vargas, a Greenpeace finance expert who was standing outside Deutsche Bank's headquarters, said: "DWS's scandal is Deutsche Bank's scandal."

Greenpeace activists scaled Deutsche Bank’s headquarters in Frankfurt Wednesday and strung up a large yellow banner to protest against the climate investment policies of the German lender and its asset management company DWS. The action came a day ahead of the annual shareholder meeting of DWS, which is mostly owned by Deutsche Bank and has drawn attention from activists and regulators over allegations it misled investors about “green” investments. Deutsche Bank (DB) said sustainability and climate protection were “strategic priorities,” and that it supports DWS in the development of its sustainability policies and standards. The German-language Greenpeace banner was unfurled shortly after 6 a.m. local time (midnight ET) and stretched across part of the glass facade on the lower section of Deutsche Bank’s twin office towers. Mauricio Vargas, a Greenpeace finance expert who was standing outside Deutsche Bank’s headquarters, said: “DWS’s scandal is Deutsche Bank’s scandal.” He plans to address shareholders Thursday.

Oleksiy Kolesnik waded ashore and stood, trembling, on dry land for the first time in hours, rescued on Wednesday morning after spending the predawn sitting on top of a cabinet in his flooded living room. “The water came really quickly,” said Mr. Kolesnik, who was so weak he had to be helped out of a rubber boat by two rescue workers. “It happened so fast.”Fetid, coffee-colored floodwaters, with plastic bags and bits of straw swirling in the eddies, lapped at streets in Kherson, a regional capital in southern Ukraine, where rescuers had evacuated a neighborhood cut off by inundated streets. Exhausted residents spilled out of the rubber boats, carrying at most a purse or a backpack, and sometimes a cat or a dog. The scene, overlooking a flooded square, was just one small snapshot of the vast devastation caused by the destruction on Tuesday of the Kakhovka dam, swelling a more-than-50-mile stretch of the Dnipro River until it swallowed docks, farms, gas stations, cars, factories and houses.

Petrobras' main bet on replenishing its reserves had been the Equatorial Margin, some 2,200 km of deepwater and ultra-deepwater assets along Brazil's northern and northeastern coast. According to one of the sources, the Equatorial Margin has been the company's "Plan A, B, and C" for restocking reserves. In March, Reuters reported that Petrobras was among at least 10 companies including Shell and Chevron to consider bidding on a Guyana oil auction, now scheduled for July. Such projects could also add scope for foreign expansion, said Mauricio Tolmasquim, Petrobras' chief energy transition and sustainability officer.

"We won't decide anything at tomorrow's meeting, it is just about discussing possibilities," Lula told a news conference on Monday with Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, on his first visit to Brazil in eight years. Lula said the leaders did not have to recreate a new Unasur but could come up with a different sort of organization. Maduro is hoping the South American countries will unite in calling on the United States to lift its sanctions against Venezuela, which he and Lula assailed at their news conference. "The aim of this initiative is to unite all the countries of the region once again," she told reporters on Friday.

SAN SALVADOR, May 29 (Reuters) - A court in El Salvador sentenced former President Mauricio Funes and his justice minister to over a decade behind bars for their ties with criminal groups and failure to comply with duties, the attorney general's office said in a tweet on Monday. Funes was sentenced to 14 years and former justice and defense minister, David Munguia, to 18. Funes, who governed from 2009 to 2014 and lives in Nicaragua, was granted Nicaraguan citizenship in 2019. El Salvador has been living under a state of emergency declared by the government of President Nayib Bukele for more than a year. Official data shows 5,000 of the prisoners have been released, as authorities found no ties to criminal groups.
Buenos Aires wants faster payouts and easier economic targets. "More than a debt, it's a crime," President Fernandez wrote in a tweet on Thursday, citing a new government auditor report that concluded the original deal had lacked the required impact study and not passed through proper legislative channels. Fernandez, who has criticized the original deal before, called for an investigation "with all the weight of the law." Powerful but divisive Vice President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, a previous two-term president, called the original deal "scandalous" and a "scam" of the Argentine people. Macri and the IMF have defended the original deal as necessary to restore Argentina's economic stability.

CNN and the GVA define a mass shooting as a shooting that injures or kills four or more people, not including the shooter. They argue that more firearms and higher gun ownership increases public safety – a stance that continues to be at odds with gun violence experts and data. The area around the Robb Elementary School signs has become a memorial dedicated to the victims of the May 24 mass shooting. Mass shootings are just a piece of that, and the strategies that we’re laying out will impact mass shootings. They’ll also impact a lot of other types of gun violence and that’s absolutely critical to saving lives,” Horwitz said.

The investigative news website Bellingcat reported on the Texas mall shooter's apparent neo-Nazi beliefs. Right-wing commentators on Twitter suggested that it was fake news, and Elon Musk called it a "psyop." Days later, Bellingcat's founder said its Twitter account no longer appeared in the app's search tool. Bellingcat reported that Garcia had tattoos of a swastika and other Nazi symbols, and posted about being a white supremacist on Odnoklassniki (OK), a Russian social media site. Musk tweeted.
The first photo appears to be from Recentlybooked.com (archive.ph/pegWi) showing a February 2022 arrest for a man with the same name as the Texas gunman. The sites say the man is 36 years old, but Reuters reported the shooter in Allen was 33 years old. Indeed, these photos are not of the Allen, Texas gunman, but show a man with the same name but different date of birth, a Dallas County Sheriff’s Department spokesperson said. “The photos that we have seen are not the same person in the Allen shooting,” the spokesperson said. The gunman in the recent Texas mall shooting has been misidentified in online posts, which share photos of a man with the same name but different age.
Dashcam footage circulating online appears to show the moment an alleged gunman exits his car and opens fire on a crowd of people outside a Texas mall. Image: StoryfulAuthorities said Tuesday that the gunman they said was responsible for killing eight people at an outlet mall in Allen, Texas, legally obtained the weapons he used and had neo-Nazi ideation, but said they don’t believe he targeted a specific group of people. Hank Sibley , North Texas regional director for the Texas Department of Public Safety, said it appeared to him that Mauricio Garcia targeted the Allen Premium Outlets as a location and not anyone specifically. Among the dead were women, men and children, some of them of Asian descent. Seven people were wounded in the shooting.

Mauricio Garcia, 33 years old, was shot dead by a police officer after opening fire at Allen Premium Outlets, authorities said. He used an AR-15-style rifle in the attack and multiple other firearms were found at the scene, according to the officials.
Though investigators have yet to pin down a motive in the attack, they are probing whether Garcia was driven by extremist ideologies, a law enforcement source told CNN. Among those killed were two elementary school-aged sisters; three members of a Korean American family, including a child; a mall security guard; and a young engineer. Law enforcement does not yet feel they have a “complete picture” of Garcia’s past and are continuing to dig into his background, a law enforcement source told CNN. The child’s name and age were not given, but the Texas Department of Safety did note a three-year-old child was among those killed. Other victims included Christian LaCour, an outlet mall security guard, and Aishwarya Thatikonda, who was killed while visiting the mall with a friend, CNN affiliate WFAA reported.
Texas gunman had 'neo-Nazi ideation,' officials say

May 9 (Reuters) - Texas law enforcement officials said on Tuesday the gunman who killed eight people over the weekend at an outlet mall in suburban Dallas had "neo-Nazi ideation" but that his victims appeared to be chosen randomly without regard for age, sex or race. The gunman, identified as Mauricio Garcia, opened fire with an AR-15-style rifle at the crowded Allen Premium Outlets mall in Allen on Saturday. The eight people who died in the mass shooting included three children. In addition 10 people, ranging in age from 5 to 61, were wounded. The shooter had eight legally purchased weapons, three on him and five in his vehicle, said Hank Sibley, a regional director of the Texas Department of Public Safety.

He used an AR-15-style rifle in the attack and multiple other firearms were found at the scene, according to the officials.
Christian LaCour was working as a security guard in the mall when he was killed, his family said. Brianna SmithIn addition to an AR-15 style firearm and another weapon found with Garcia, police also discovered several more weapons in his car, the law enforcement source told CNN. Neighbors of an address matching that of Garcia’s parents told CNN that police and the FBI arrived at the home about an hour after the attack and had the street blocked off for several hours. As part of his work, Garcia received Level II and Level III security training. He found a surviving child whose mother had been struck and killed as she shielded him from bullets, Spainhouer told CNN affiliate KTVT.
“I hear our governor talking about mental health issues,” Spainhouer said of Texas Gov. Greg Abbott during a Monday appearance on “CNN This Morning.”“We’re always going to have mental health issues. “Until we take some definite actions, we’re changing the narrative about it being just a mental health issue and start doing something about the guns,” he added. Texas ranks last on mental health accessIt was a major understatement for Abbott to say that Texas merely lags on mental health. A report from the nonprofit Mental Health America places the state at or near the bottom of multiple metrics for mental health care.
May 8 (Reuters) - The man accused of shooting and killing eight people at a Texas mall appeared to have embraced white supremacist and neo-Nazi ideologies, multiple media outlets reported on Monday. In social media profiles thought to be linked to the suspect, 33-year-old Mauricio Garcia, investigators found posts targeting racial or ethnic minorities, NBC News reported, citing two law enforcement officials. On a Russian social media platform, a user believed to have been Garcia praised the dictator Adolf Hitler and sympathized with neo-Nazi beliefs, according to the New York Times, citing law enforcement sources.
