A “general amnesty” has restored hundreds of accounts of right-wing activists and QAnon adherents, according to data reviewed by NBC News. The reinstatement of far-right accounts has coincided with a series of bans of left-wing accounts, leaving users unsure of how the company is now applying its rules. It’s a dangerous combination.”The reinstatements and bans come as researchers continue to monitor an uptick in hate speech, and high-profile users leave the platform. Among the spammers, copyright rule-breakers, adult-content creators and high-profile accounts, Twitter has reopened the door to a growing and emboldened community of trolls, white nationalists, conspiracy theorists and extreme right-wing activists. Those reinstatements also come after Twitter dramatically reduced its staff, including those dedicated to dealing with abuse and hate speech.
Black users have long been one of Twitter’s most engaged demographics, flocking to the platform to steer online culture and drive real-world social change. But a month after Elon Musk took over, some Black influencers are eyeing the exits just as he races to shore up the company’s business. And while there is no hard data on how many Black users have either joined or left the platform over that period, some prominent influencers say they’re actively pursuing alternatives. Some signs indicate a slowdown among Black Twitter users that predates Musk. “It’s crippling to the economies of cities when Black folks leave, platforms when Black folks leave, entertainment sites when Black folks leave,” she said.
Popular comedy Twitter account Dril told WaPo that the platform will be "a beautiful thing" under Elon Musk. Musk is a "classic comedic showman," Dril, one of the site's best-loved comedy accounts, told the Washington Post. Speaking to the Washington Post in a phone interview, Dril compared Twitter to Musk's invention of the Hyperloop. Dril said Musk's Twitter takeover has been entertaining calling him a "classic comedic showman," to the Post. When asked whether he'd make the switch from Twitter to other platforms like Mastodon, TikTok or Substack, Dril told the Post that he isn't keen.
This week, Hive Social garnered the top spot in the social networking category on the US App Store. As I tried to download the Hive app on my Apple device, however, I was greeted with a series of errors. Hive Social, which lists just two employees on LinkedIn, did not respond to CNN Business’ requests for an interview or further comment. On its website, Hive Social also outlines goals for keeping the community respectful. To be fair, Hive started in 2019 and never sought to be a Twitter clone or to welcome a sudden influx of disgruntled Twitter users.
Hive is the latest social media app to climb to the top of the App Store as Twitter users look for alternatives. Hive's 24-year-old founder told Insider she wasn't surprised Musk acknowledged the app, given its surge in popularity. Mastodon and Tumblr have seen a recent explosion of growth, but Hive Social is the latest buzzy social media app to climb the ranks of Apple's App Store, and even Elon Musk took notice. In a conversation with Insider, Hive Social's 24-year-old founder, Raluca Pop, said it was "unsurprising" that Musk noticed the platform. "There's not really the toxicity on there," Pop said of Hive Social.
Some users searching for alternatives to Twitter have flocked to Hive Social. Elon Musk's frenzied management style and outlook on content moderation have some Twitter users hunting for alternatives to the social media giant. It's currently the top social app on Apple's App Store, surpassing even TikTok. She is a self-taught coder and had run the social media app with only one other employee until Friday, when a third developer joined the team. On Thursday, many new Hive Social users reported on Twitter that they were having trouble setting up their accounts.
Biologists, anthropologists, and information theorists do think that social networks, like Musk's bird app, show at least some signs of being flocks. "Elon's tweet is basically espousing the invisible hand of social behavior," Bak-Coleman says. In this construction, a social network might have become a collective superintelligence, had capitalists left it to its — our? Under Musk, Twitter has entered the dance-off phase. I'll be sad if the Twitter superintelligence starts singing a Kubrickian cover of "Daisy" and implodes into a pile of melting isolinear chips.
Since Elon Musk took over Twitter, promising to uphold free speech, some accounts were reinstated. Some accounts previously banned or suspended have been revived, but in typical Musk fashion, the reinstatements haven't come without controversy. After 51% of respondents voted "yes," the billionaire owner restored Trump's Twitter account the next day. After five years, his Twitter account was reinstated. After being suspended, Peterson filmed a nearly 15-minute long YouTube video, saying he would rather die than delete the hateful tweet.
Servers are confusing, because Mastodon isn't really one website. The list of server URLs can be overwhelming. Because it's decentralized, the app isn't really one site like Twitter, but a collection of servers, like multiple kids stacked under a Mastodon trench coat. Most of the big accounts are on general servers like "mastodon.social," but when I tried to join it, it wasn't letting anybody else in. I eventually settled for "mas.to," another general server with about 100,000 users.
Eugen Rochko told BBC Newsnight that Elon Musk's leadership style "shows incompetence." Mastodon has recently surged in popularity as users seek alternatives to Musk's Twitter. "Frankly, I'm not a fan of it," Eugen Rochko told BBC Newsnight on Friday. The platform's popularity has surged, with downloads up more than 650% in the 12 days following Elon Musk's takeover of Twitter, according to SensorTower. Rochko told Newsnight he created Mastodon precisely because he recognised the importance of Twitter as a tool for global communication.
Here are steps you can take if you’re worried about losing your Twitter account. Downloading your Twitter archiveIf you want to preserve your past tweets, you can start by downloading your Twitter archive. Users can download their archive by going to their account setting pages, clicking on the “more” icon and then selecting “Your account” from the options menu. Staying in touch with Twitter contacts on other platformsAmid the uncertainty surrounding Twitter, the social media app Mastodon has seen its popularity skyrocket in recent weeks. Some other tools have emerged, such as Twitodon, which helps users find their Twitter followers and the accounts they followed on Mastodon.
So I'm confident saying Twitter won't wink out of existence, here one day and gone the next. That said, I'm also confident that Twitter won't be the same after Musk's gambit. Here's how I think will happen:Power users start to abandon ship. The combination of app unreliability and the increasingly-notable absence of power users and influencers will lead to average Twitter users spending less time on the site. If and when users stop refreshing Twitter because it's no longer reliable, they'll start spending more time on other platforms.
It is much more than simply a social media website. World leaders use Twitter to communicate, journalists use Twitter to newsgather, dissidents in repressive countries use Twitter to organize, celebrities and major brands use Twitter to make important announcements, and the public uses Twitter to often monitor all of it in real-time. “Twitter vs not Twitter isn’t a simple binary, particularly not for news journalism. And, of course, social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and others are options. A US senator, for instance, expressed to CNN Thursday night — via Twitter direct messages — that they would miss the platform.
CNN Business —Elon Musk has been saying for months that he wants to stamp out spam and fake accounts on Twitter, but a subtle change he’s planning to make to the platform could complicate that goal. In a tweet this week, Musk said Twitter will stop showing notations such as “Twitter for iPhone” and “Twitter Web App” at the bottom of tweets, which are intended to indicate where users’ messages originate. He said researchers can consider it along with other factors, such as the specific tweets accounts post, the time frames in which the posts went up, and the sources they quote. Many academic researchers use Twitter’s API to study bots and misinformation on the social network. If a tweet was marked “Mastodon-Twitter Crossposter”, for instance, it would be clear that the post had been published both on Twitter and social network Mastodon.

It has been reported that more than 200.000 new users flocked the social media app after the takeover of Twitter by Elon Musk. One of the fastest growing alternatives is Mastodon, which looks and feels a lot like Twitter. In the 12 days after Musk bought Twitter, Mastodon app downloads on Apple App Store and Google Play for Android surged more than 100 times previous rates to 322,000 installs during the period, according to analysis by Sensor Tower, an app analytics firm. That's still a lot lower than the over 245 million daily active users of Twitter that CEO Elon Musk tweeted about this week. The Twitter network known as 'Black Twitter' is finding humor in the potential end of the unofficial community. Black users are sharing laughs and meaningful tributes to their time on Twitter as many mull leaving. Non-Black users are also chiming in to attribute Twitter's success to the Black Twitter network. For the uninitiated, Black Twitter is the unofficial online network of Black Twitter users. Some even promised to follow Black users if they chose to leave Twitter for another platform.
New data from SensorTower found that smaller rivals like Mastodon and Tumblr have also seen an explosion of growth. Twitter installs have grown by 21% since Musk's takeover, while Mastodon's have grown by 657%, according to the data. Mastodon has 1 million global downloads, according to SensorTower, while Twitter had 238 million daily active users as of July. However, the recent interest in smaller microblogging sites points to some users' discontent with the recent chaos on Elon Musk's Twitter and the growing demand for a replacement. Tumblr has taken advantage of the newfound attention, trolling Elon Musk's recent blue checkmark fiasco by offering to sell two blue checks for $7.99.
Twitter is not dead — but some of its users are already mourning what the platform was, before Elon Musk's takeover. As the site descends further into chaos, users are getting nostalgic and sharing their favorite memories of "old school Twitter." On Thursday, she asked her followers to share a “happy Twitter memory,” and said the responses affirmed her appreciation for pre-chaos Twitter. “Somebody said, ‘I used to think that queer people were sinning ... and now I don’t because of Twitter,’” Crozier said. There were users who pointed out that Twitter, pre-Musk, had been referred to as a “hellsite“ where users “doomscrolled“ for hours.
It has been reported that more than 200.000 new users flocked the social media app after the takeover of Twitter by Elon Musk. Hundreds of thousands of users have joined the platform since Elon Musk took over Twitter. On its website, it describes itself as "radically different social media, back in the hands of the people." To make a Mastodon account, you first have to pick a server — the source of my initial feeling of overwhelm. "Mastodon still looks too technical for the standard user, which will pose challenges to adoption," she told CNBC's Make It.
Scott Bryan used Twitter to build a career as a journalist writing and commentating about TV. He fears Musk's takeover will drive people from the platform, which would deny others its benefits. For people interested in entering journalism, Twitter provides a network of pretty much every single editor and journalist in the country. Beyond my following, I use Twitter to sense how much the wider public is reacting to a new TV story. My tweets show editors and producers what I'm knowledgeable about and have led to invitations to go on radio and TV.
Facebook employees react to being laid off

After the company let go thousands of employees on Wednesday, some took to social media to discuss being fired and search for new jobs. Meta employees are taking to social media to discuss layoffs. After the company laid off more than 11,000 workers, some are turning to LinkedIn or Twitter to share their accounts of the layoffs and search for new jobs. Regulatory filings show Musk sold 19.5 million of the company's shares following his $44 billion Twitter buyout. Microsoft's former VP of HR shares three questions job candidates can use to nail an interview.
My posts have been popping this week. So many likes and replies—especially the one about dogs vs. cats. (Dogs, duh.) Yet all the while, I kept thinking about the one man who controls my fate on this social network. Ruud Schilders.
What to know about Mastodon, the Twitter alternative
  + stars: | 2022-11-08 | by ( Rachel Metz | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +7 min
I am one of these Mastodon newcomers, trying it out of curiosity and because Twitter has felt increasingly toxic over time. Davide Bonaldo/SOPA Images/ShutterstockBut while it can be exciting to seek out a new social network, it can be tricky, too. Mastodon and Twitter have some similarities, yet they’re quite different — both in how they work and how they’re operated. I have mostly taken the more manual route by searching on Twitter for the word “Mastodon” to pull up people I follow who have added Mastodon usernames to their Twitter profile names. There also isn’t a Mastodon equivalent to Twitter’s quote-tweet feature, where you can repost another user’s post and append your own thoughts to it.
