HONG KONG (AP) — Police in Hong Kong and Macao said Friday they arrested four more people linked to the cryptocurrency platform JPEX, which is suspected to have defrauded more than 2,400 people of almost $200 million. Police have received 2,417 reports involving more than 1.5 billion Hong Kong dollars ($191.6 million) in alleged losses on the platform. Hong Kong police said in a news conference Friday they had arrested two men, one of whom had been trying to destroy documents with paper shredders and bleach. Cash and gold worth nearly $9 million Hong Kong dollars ($1.15 million) were also seized at three apartments in the latest police operation. Two other men were detained in Macao, with authorities seizing over 14 million Hong Kong dollars ($1.8 million) in cash and valuables, as well as money in a casino account.

The only issue that Americans on all sides of our vast political divide seem to agree on is that we cannot agree on anything. Even basic facts have become matters of opinion. But polls indicate that about one-fifth of all Americans believe the microchip conspiracy theory to be true or are unsure whether it is true. It is a fact that Hunter Biden’s laptop was real, not part of a Russian disinformation campaign. In the work I do looking at the reliability of online news and information, I can see that the erosion of trust in basic facts is largely the result of too many people getting their news from social media platforms.

NEW YORK, July 31 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Hedge fund mastermind Steve Cohen is best known for his savvy trades, but it doesn’t take an investing whizz to make money in baseball. His New York Mets are one of the worst teams in the league despite a record-setting $364 million payroll. Cohen bought full ownership of the club in 2020 for $2.4 billion and spent lavishly on the roster. Even so, the Mets are already worth $500 million more than Cohen paid, according to Forbes, a nice uplift for substandard performance. Dan Snyder just sold his woeful Washington Commanders for $6 billion; Snyder paid $800 million for the team and its stadium in 1999.
