Lawmakers backing the bill say a large number of companies in the state already disclose some of their own emissions. California’s climate disclosure bill would be different because of all the indirect emissions companies would have to report. But the California bill would go beyond that, by mandating that both public and private companies report their direct and indirect emissions. Companies would have to report indirect emissions including those released by transporting products and disposing waste. Companies would have to begin publicly disclosing their direct emissions annually in 2026 and start annually reporting their indirect emissions starting in 2027.

NEW YORK (AP) — An upcoming civil trial over allegations that former president Donald Trump lied about his wealth could last as long as three months, according to a schedule laid out Friday by the judge hearing the case. Opening arguments are expected Oct. 2 in the trial over a lawsuit filed against Trump and his family business by New York Attorney General Letitia James. In the suit, James has said Trump deceived lenders, potential business associates and others by chronically exaggerating the value of his real estate holdings. The trial is expected to feature extensive amounts of expert testimony over how much Trump holdings, like his golf courses and skyscrapers, were actually worth. Judge Arthur Engoron, in an order filed Friday, said the trial should end by Dec. 22, though he added that the lawyers handling the case could ask for additional time if necessary.

Just three — Mike Dunleavy of Alaska, Jim Justice of West Virginia and Henry McMaster of South Carolina — have backed Mr. Trump. Two others — Ron DeSantis of Florida and Doug Burgum of North Dakota — are running against him. Some close to the former president said that was most likely rooted in superstition that such consideration would jeopardize his own nomination. Mr. Trump raised eyebrows among some associates with private, offhand comments that Mr. Scott had not received much coverage for his performance during the first Republican presidential debate. Mr. Scott has been mentioned as a potential vice-presidential pick even though he is currently running against Mr. Trump, who didn’t participate in his party’s first debate.

Walgreens has been shifting away from pharmacy and retail to focus more on health care services, with mixed results. “While the wisdom of this move is debatable, health care is not Ms. Brewer’s forte.”Before joining Walgreens, Ms. Brewer was the chief operating officer of Starbucks and previously served as chief executive of Sam’s Club, a division of Walmart. As Walgreens leans more into the health care business, it faces several hurdles, industry experts said. It is rare for a woman to replace another female chief executive.

CIBC blamed soft U.S. real estate and construction sectors and high interest rates for its three-fold jump in bad loan provisions to C$736 million ($544 million). "Where we are seeing the issues is in commercial real estate and in particular, in the institutional office space," said Shawn Beber, the bank's head of U.S. operations. And as that transition continues, you'll see (commercial real estate) wind up being a smaller percentage of the overall U.S. portfolio as our commercial and industrial and our wealth businesses continue to grow," Beber told analysts. The U.S. office portfolio represents less than 1% of CIBC's overall loan book and 20% of overall U.S. commercial real estate. "It appears that higher interest rates for longer may be the primary culprit," RBC analyst Darko Mihelic said.

Trump federal election trial set for March 4, 2024

"In our judgment, that trial date is inconsistent with President Trump's right to due process and the right to effective assistance of counsel," Lauro said in the hearing. But Trump's proposal for an April 2026 trial date went "far beyond what is necessary," the judge said, NBC News reported. A federal judge on Monday set a March 4, 2024, trial date in former President Donald Trump 's criminal election interference case, putting the top Republican presidential candidate on trial in Washington, D.C., seven months before the 2024 general election . Trump, a top Republican presidential candidate who is facing four separate criminal cases, has sought to move his trials past the November 2024 election. Chutkan noted Monday that she spoke with the New York judge overseeing Trump's case in Manhattan, which is also set to go to trial in March.

After 122 Years, a Lost Edith Wharton Play Gets Its Debut

Edith Wharton’s 1934 autobiography, “A Backward Glance,” glances a bit more carefully at some things than others. She gives her close friend and fellow literary lion Henry James a chapter, but names her husband of 28 years exactly once. “The Shadow of a Doubt,” a full-length 1901 play that got close to a Broadway opening before foundering under murky circumstances. It was all but forgotten — which is perhaps what Wharton had intended — until two scholars unearthed a script in 2016. “Their work is so spread out that there’s a lot we still don’t know about.”

The dismal quarter prompted Foot Locker to lower its forecast again – just five months after introducing it. Those heavy markdowns have weighed on Foot Locker's margins, which dropped 4.6 percentage points compared with the year-ago period. Shrink, a retail industry term that refers to merchandise lost by theft, damage or other means, also weighed on profits, Foot Locker said. It didn't disclose how much shrink cut into its margins compared with promotions. But Foot Locker has been trying to reduce its reliance on Nike and balance its vendor mix.

Dogs that will work fire scenes are trained to detect burnt flesh - and can distinguish human remains from those of pets and other animals. Just as teaching hospitals to use cadavers to teach medical students, Cablk said, trainers use human flesh and blood to train dogs. Some countries don't allow human remains in such training, and in those places dogs are taught using animal remains, making rescues more difficult. Cadaver dogs are trained to associate the scent of human remains with a reward, typically a chew toy, Cablk said. "That's the dog's paycheck," Cablk said.

Cadaver dogs are in Maui to help find the deceased

As Maui officials continue searching through the wreckage for the many who are still missing after wildfires tore through the island, they have a new tool at hand: human remains detection dogs, often called cadaver dogs. Human remains detection dogs are one of several kinds of working dogs trained to detect scents, like bomb or drug detection dogs. Search dogs are often dogs with a working heritage, like border collies or German shepherds. Lynne Engelbert, a human remains detection dog handler and teacher, told CNN the job requires a specific canine personality. Lisa Briggs, a forensic criminologist who specializes in the use of human remains detection dogs, told CNN not all human remains detection dogs have the same skills – and the dogs in Maui would need to be imprinted specifically on burnt remains in order to search effectively.

“No way I can get a fair trial, or even close to a fair trial, in Washington, D.C. Several January 6 defendants have argued that there’s been too much pretrial publicity in DC for a fair trial and that the jury pool in the city would be too biased. Still, Trump attorney John Lauro on Sunday cast doubt on the idea that Trump could receive a fair trial in the nation’s capital. Former Vice President Mike Pence, who recently made his sharpest condemnation of Trump, told CBS on Sunday he “would hope” Trump can receive a fair trial in Washington.
