Paulo Cesar Gomes, a 56-year-old entomologist, found some mosquito larvae swimming in shallow rainwater inside a car bumper. Captured mosquitos and larvae are kept alive and brought to a city laboratory to be tested for dengue. At locations with positive tests, health agents spray the walls with a product that kills mosquitos and then monitor the location for weeks. In Rio, more than 80% of mosquito breeding sites are located in residential properties, health officials say. Health workers and volunteers went door to door, pacing up and down the narrow streets of Rio's Tabajara working-class neighborhood, or favela, to spread the word.

But some conservatives say they won’t support any Ukraine aid, even if it’s just narrow military aid. “There’s the possibility that the Republican majority would support Ukraine aid paid for, with real border security attached to it,” Good said. Rep. Chip Roy of Texas, also a Freedom Caucus member, laid out a number of conditions he would need in order to support Ukraine aid. One option that was discussed during the meeting was stripping the aid package of its humanitarian assistance for Ukraine and only including military aid for Ukraine. And I think we should have been focused on military aid,” Rep. Don Bacon, a swing district Republican from Nebraska, told CNN.

Big news for (some) video game players: Microsoft is going to stop making you use Microsoft devices to play (some) Microsoft games. AdvertisementVery short summary of the console video game business: It's common for video game hardware makers to also own or license games that are exclusively for their devices. The idea is that a single game (or several games) will be enough reason for a gamer to buy a specific device. Maybe, as Warren reports, Microsoft will also announce new hardware plans at the same time it makes the new software change. But it's hard to see how the games move alone is going to be anything more than Microsoft accepting reality.

The project, dubbed Metamorphosis, focuses on transforming what otherwise might be discarded into something of value to society: rotten wood into fine instruments, inmates into craftsmen, all under the principle of rehabilitation. Two inmates were granted leave to see the concert featuring 14 prison-made stringed instruments playing a program that included works by Bach and Vivaldi. Other inmates, like Nikolae, who joined Lamponi at La Scala, are permitted more latitude. His own rocky journey to a new country has given him an understanding of the desperation that drove migrants onto unseaworthy boats. Originally, the boats were being transformed into crucifixes and nativity scenes, but the inmates who were already trained luthiers thought: why not instruments?

Six Republican and unaffiliated voters in Colorado had filed the lawsuit that led to the state Supreme Court ruling. Gibson, a senior research analyst at financial services firm MST Marquee, has set a price target of 11,000 Japanese yen ($74) for Nintendo's stock. This represents a 31% upside over the current price. He told the investment bank's clients that Nintendo could delay the Switch 2 launch if the momentum for the current console remains strong. The analyst has rated Nintendo a buy but set a conservative price target of 8,400 yen. However, if the new console fails to gain traction with consumers, Gibson cautioned that Nintendo's stock is likely to miss his price target.

It's a story increasingly familiar in the energy industry: Some utility companies don't properly assess the risks wildfires pose to their operations. The lawsuit also alleges the company "inexcusably kept their power lines energized during the forecasted high-fire danger conditions." LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Opera opens its 2024-25 season Sept. 21 with Puccini’s “Madama Butterfly” reimagined in a film studio and said Saturday it will present the company premiere of Osvaldo Golijov’s “Ainadamar" while reducing its offerings from six main-stage productions to five. Washington, DC CNN —Americans are living through the toughest housing market in a generation and, for some young people, the quintessential dream of owning a home is slipping away. Mortgage rates surged in recent years, hitting the highest levels in more than two decades last fall. CNN spoke with some young Americans about their thoughts on the current state of the US housing market and their plans for the future. “The housing market is not a single person’s market.”What typically happens when a regional housing market becomes too unaffordable is that people without the means simply move somewhere cheaper, such as a suburb an hour away, for example. Still, affordability takes into account mortgage rates, family incomes and single-family home prices, which remain a vexing pain point.

Wisconsin’s top prison official wrote to the governor in 2015 with a dire warning: The state prisons were dangerously understaffed, imperiling both guards and inmates. Five years later, two men escaped from a maximum-security Wisconsin prison that once held Jeffrey Dahmer, fleeing early one morning when four of the facility’s five watchtowers were unmanned. Today, two of the state’s prisons have been in lockdown for months. Prison officials who initially blamed the restrictions on violent outbursts have since conceded that a shortage of guards has kept the lockdowns in place. By the time the crisis began, the state had known for years that it was losing guards faster than it could replace them, an examination by The New York Times and Wisconsin Watch has found.

Formula One's invitation to Andretti Cadillac for an in-person meeting about its application to join the motorsports series was sent via email and landed in a spam folder, which is why Michael Andretti and General Motors representatives never answered the request. The junk email revelation came Friday as Andretti Global sought to clarify two points in the sharply critical document F1 released earlier this week in rejecting the Andretti Cadillac application. An in-person meeting to discuss commercial matters would be and remains of paramount importance to Andretti Cadillac,” the team said. “Andretti Cadillac has been operating with 2026 as the year of entry for many months now," the team said. He then petitioned F1 to expand the grid for what Andretti claims will be a true American team in the series.

To them, nostalgia might even cause people to be discontent with the present and pessimistic about the future. Studies indicate that feeling lonely increases nostalgia and that nostalgia, in turn, increases feelings of social connectedness. Americans 45 and older were more likely than those under 45 to view nostalgic memories as reminders of what's important and as sources of inspiration and guidance. That isn't surprising; older adults have more life experiences to draw from. Every one of them has stories of nostalgic inspiration — life experiences that sparked their passion.

In today's big story, we're looking at how much Americans spend on rent and why cheap properties are so hard to come by. And now a new Harvard study demonstrates how costly the rental market has become, Business Insider's Pete Syme writes. Harvard's Joint Center for Housing Studies estimated 12.1 million American households spend more than half their income on rent and utilities. That number grows to 22.4 million households for those spending more than 30% of their income on rent and utilities. Meanwhile, experts predict the housing market will reverse course this year as housing inventory increases and mortgage rates fall.
