Air quality has hit unhealthy levels in several parts of Malaysia in recent days, with Kuala Lumpur blaming fires in Indonesia -- though Jakarta has denied detecting any smoke drifting over its borders into Malaysia. Fires that sent haze billowing across the region in 2015 and 2019 burned millions of hectares of land and produced record-breaking emissions, according to scientists. He called for joint action by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) either through legislation or agreement to prevent the yearly haze. He said Malaysia was still "seriously" considering a law similar to Singapore that holds companies liable for air pollution.

Schools and kindergartens must stop all outdoor activities when API readings reach 100, and close when they reach 200, he said. The environmental group Greenpeace, meanwhile, called on countries in the region to introduce legislation to stop plantation companies causing air pollution. Singapore, which prides itself on its clean air, passed a cross-border air pollution law in 2014 that makes those who cause haze both criminally and civilly liable.

Enovix said it paid $16.5 million in cash and 6.2 million shares of common stock for RouteJade, which had previously been a supplier to Enovix. Enovix Chief Executive Raj Talluri told Reuters that the deal will help Fremont, California-based Enovix vertically integrate its battery manufacturing operations as it scales up a factory in Malaysia next year. With the deal, "we are able to really take advantage of all the new materials coming out and quickly run them through R&D and manufacturing, so we can change our battery composition quickly," Talluri said. Enovix is developing a technology that can replace part of a battery called an anode, traditionally made out of graphite, with silicon instead.

CNN —Michelle Yeoh could soon become a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) after the Oscar winner was among eight candidates nominated by the organization’s executive board. Her proposed membership is set to be ratified at an IOC session in Mumbai, India, next month. In March, Yeoh won best actress at the 95th Academy Awards for her acclaimed performance in “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” becoming the first woman of Asian descent to win the award. She was also the first Malaysian-born performer to be honored with a best actress Oscar. She made her name in Hong Kong action movies of the 1980s and 90s, before her breakthrough international role in 1997 opposite Pierce Brosnan in the James Bond film “Tomorrow Never Dies.”

BERLIN, Sept 8 (Reuters) - Michelle Yeoh, the first Asian actress to win an Oscar, is set to become a member of the International Olympic Committee after being included on a list of eight new proposed members on Friday. Yeoh won the Oscar for best lead actress earlier this year for her role in the movie "Everything Everywhere All at Once" and her proposed IOC membership will be ratified at its session in Mumbai next month. Mehrez Boussayene, President of the Tunisian Olympic Committee, is also up for election as an ex-officio member. The IOC is the guardian of the Olympic Games and the leader of the Olympic movement, according to its website. "Thevision of the International Olympic Committee is to Build a Better World through Sport," it says.

Geothermal developer KS Orka had earlier this year appointed DBS to explore the sale of Sorik Marapi, the sources said, declining to be identified as the matter is private. Pertamina Geothermal and KS Orka did not immediately respond to requests seeking comment on Friday. If the deal materialises, it could mark one of the biggest by Pertamina Geothermal since its domestic initial public offering in February. KS Orka acquired a majority share of the company in mid-2016, the website showed, without disclosing the value. Besides Sorik Marapi, KS Orka's other projects include PT Sokoria Geothermal Indonesia in East Nusa Tenggara, KS Orka's website showed.
