"When you get as much money as you get from outside the district, your constituency is Dearborn, Michigan. This was the point during the LWV debate where George Latimer said to Jamaal Bowman: "Your constituency is Dearborn, Michigan, your constituency is San Francisco, California." It's true that most of Bowman's $2.7 million fundraising haul this cycle has come from outside of New York. But Latimer's financial support is also more local — roughly 70% of his direct contributions come from New York, while less than 30% of Bowman's come from the state.

CNN —Former President Donald Trump lately has dangled some very specific promises to his audiences. But Trump’s campaign has prioritized flipping Nevada and the Democratic Party’s historical advantage in Latino communities, and polling suggests they have made progress on both fronts. Trump’s campaign confirmed the former president intends to seek a legislative change. “President Trump will ask Congress to eliminate taxes on tips,” spokesperson Karoline Leavitt told CNN. Trump has published an entire website to host many of his proposals for a second term.

“We have the Israelis right where we want them,” Sinwar told Hamas’ political leadership in Qatar recently, according to one of the messages, the WSJ reported Monday. The date of the message isn’t clear but suggests that Sinwar is pressing for the war to continue. “Israel’s journey in Rafah won’t be a walk in the park,” Sinwar allegedly said in a message to the Hamas political leadership. CNN has not seen the leaked messages viewed by the WSJ and is not able to confirm the authenticity of the communications. Republicans defended Mr. Trump against what they insisted was an unfair trial in New York. Senator Chris Coons, a Delaware Democrat and co-chairman of Mr. Biden’s re-election campaign, opposed asylum restrictions when Mr. Trump enacted them. “Former President Trump actually wants a problem to solve through his election rather than a solution that a bipartisan group of senators stood behind,” he said. President Trump is simply making a political issue of this.”Whitmer said contraception was “very much at risk” under Republicans. Vance of Ohio, another possible running mate to Mr. Trump, criticized Mr. Biden for his trip to Normandy to mark the 80th anniversary of D-Day, and for an ad from his campaign that featured veterans denouncing Mr. Trump.

CNN —Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas on Sunday pushed back on criticism of President Joe Biden’s new executive action restricting asylum while calling on Congress to take action on the border. Still, Mayorkas insisted the restrictions on asylum would reduce the number of people who try to cross the border. “The bipartisan deal was rejected once, we pressed forward again. And it requires the cooperation of other countries which we have secured.”But Mayorkas again called on Congress to do more. “Former President Trump tried to implement a Muslim ban, a ban on entry to this country explicitly based on one religion.

CNN —Narendra Modi has raised India’s stature on the global stage like no other recent leader of the world’s most populous country. But the election results also place Modi in a radically different position from the one he enjoyed during his first decade in power. Now, Modi’s BJP will need to answer the interests of its coalition allies – and face stronger checks from a resurgent opposition, which could dampen its Hindu-nationalist agenda. In the meantime, some observers suggest that while the election results may not have boosted Modi, they are already a boon for India’s global clout. “India coming back as a proper democracy is good for the world order in many senses,” he added.

India and Pakistan will take on each other in the Men’s T20 World Cup. But I soon realized that one of the unexpected pleasures of cricket in America was seeing the sport bloom between the cracks. Through their eyes, the New York cricket world continued to bloom in front of me. CNN —A Palestinian-American engineer has sued the social media giant Meta, accusing his former employer of discriminating against pro-Palestinian speech on its platforms and of wrongfully firing him after he investigated the issue as part of his official duties. “The employee was dismissed for violating Meta’s data access policies, which we make clear to employees will result in immediate termination,” Meta spokesperson Andy Stone said in a statement to CNN. When Hamad flagged the matter late last year to colleagues within the same team, he allegedly began to receive communications from Meta employees outside of the team pressuring him to drop the investigation. The firing took place against the backdrop of other examples of company bias against pro-Palestinian speech, Hamad alleges. The lawsuit also cites a December 2023 report by Human Rights Watch documenting claims that Meta unreasonably suppressed peaceful pro-Palestinian speech.

Tuesday’s election results, in which Prime Minister Modi sealed a rare third term, only enhance the sense of gloom and doom for Indian Muslims like me. With the BJP back in power – albeit without the supermajority it had vowed – my only hope lies in a politically weakened Modi now. A weakened Modi shall, hopefully, translate into a more robust India and more secure minorities. In the days and months to come, things could get seriously tough for Indian Muslims. It could be the norm for the rest of India soon as the BJP tries to deny Indian Muslims the right to follow Islamic laws in civil matters, a right granted by the Indian Constitution.

Biden Tries to Close a Loophole

President Biden’s latest executive actions on immigration are an attempt to shrink a loophole that has allowed many people to enter the country without legal permission. That loophole is the asylum system. Not as intendedThe modern idea of asylum stems from World War II. Today, many migrants claim asylum even though they are not at risk of being persecuted. They instead want to move to the U.S. — understandably enough — because it is a richer, politically freer and less violent place than much of the world.

CNN —Joe Biden is pushing progressives who are already sour on his presidency to the limit with a tough new executive action barring most asylum applications from migrants crossing the US-Mexico border illegally. Of all issues tested, Biden recorded his lowest approval rating on immigration in a CNN poll in February — just 30%. Progressives face their own dilemmaBiden would never say it bluntly in public, but his gamble with progressives carries an implicit question — where else are they going to go? Some Haley supporters on Tuesday welcomed Biden’s immigration actions, CNN’s Kit Maher reported. “While many Haley voters continue to have policy differences, this common-sense action is a clear step in the right direction to address one of the top priorities of many Haley voters,” the Haley Voters Working Group, a coalition of approximately 25 conservative Haley supporters, posted on X.

That would deal a further blow to a relationship that Israel’s military offensive in southern Gaza had already brought to its lowest point in decades. For Israel, too, more than four decades of a so-called “cold peace” with Egypt has proved to be an essential pillar of national security. Egypt’s patience with Israel’s military moves is wearing dangerously thin, as it has repeatedly made clear. That border point, the main conduit for aid and other supplies during the war, lies between Egypt and Gaza but was recently occupied by Israel, drawing public outrage in Egypt. Egypt has refrained from taking more serious steps to respond to Israel’s moves, such as withdrawing its ambassador from Tel Aviv.

International courts are still investigating the Myanmar military’s slaughter of the country’s Rohingya Muslim minority in 2017 that the United States has called a genocide. Now a new threat to the group is looming, this time at the hands of a powerful rebel force. That force, the Arakan Army, has won control of large parts of Rakhine State in Myanmar over the past few months, most recently the northern section where many Rohingya still live. The Arakan Army has rejected these allegations. Formed roughly 15 years ago, the Arakan Army claims to be 40,000 people strong and has fought Myanmar’s military for years.

Narendra Modi, India's prime minister, center, during a campaign rally in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, India, on Thursday, April 25, 2024. Local exit polls over the weekend suggested Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bharatiya Janata Party-led alliance was set for a rare third consecutive term in power. The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance is expected to secure around 365 out of the 543 seats in the lower house of India's parliament, according to local news channel NDTV's exit poll summary. However, final results, expected on Tuesday, can diverge from exit poll projections. With the incoming government expected to highly prioritize building up India's infrastructure development, shares of Adani Group companies rose on the back of exit poll results as well.
