It is a three-way race for the presidency among current Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto and two former provincial governors, Anies Baswedan and Ganjar Pranowo. While he is the oldest candidate, his running mate is the youngest: 36-year-old Surakarta Mayor Gibran Rakabuming Raka, Widodo's son. His running mate is Mohammad Mahfud, who resigned as security minister to focus on campaigning. He is also a former defense minister, justice minister and chief justice of the Constitutional Court. His choice of Muhaimin Iskandar as his running mate in Wednesday's election is viewed as an attempt to rebuild that support.

We shared inside jokes about Grandpa's burial experience, watched Hallmark movies, and went through the Culver's drive-thru daily. I talked with Grandma about dating, being on dating apps, and the struggles of trying to meet people during the pandemic. We started dating at the same timeThat summer, between visits to my grandma, I met someone in Milwaukee, about 114 miles away from my apartment, and things steadily grew from first dates to weekly phone calls and beyond. I shared lots of updates with Grandma as we progressed from Tinder notifications to texts and pictures and voice memos. At the same time as me, my grandma had started seeing someone.

In an interview released on Thursday, Tucker Carlson urged President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia to release an American reporter for The Wall Street Journal who has been held in a notorious Moscow prison for nearly a year. Mr. Carlson’s appeal on behalf of the reporter, Evan Gershkovich, was only the second time that Mr. Putin directly addressed a case that has galvanized press freedom groups and strained diplomatic relations with the United States. Large portions of the two-hour interview were taken up by Mr. Putin’s recounting hundreds of years of Russian history. But in the final minutes, Mr. Carlson asked, “as a sign of your decency,” if he “would be willing to release him to us and we’ll bring him back to the United States.” Mr. Carlson added: “This guy’s obviously not a spy. “We have done so many gestures of good will out of decency that I think we have run out of them,” he said, according to a translation of his remarks by Mr. Carlson’s team.

Stock markets in China and Hong Kong have accelerated losses into 2024 after shedding trillions of dollars since 2021. "The likelihood of the prediction that China's GDP will one day overtake that of the US is declining," Prasad added to Nikkei. China's economy has struggled to regain post-pandemic traction. But Beijing hasn't conceded its economy is in trouble, which could be holding it back from fixing structural issues, says the Rhodium Group. Rhodium Group's researchers aren't quite sure about the rosy narrative of China's economy, calling it a "politicized picture of economic activity." After all, China's economy struggled to regain traction after a brief spurt post-pandemic, disappointing investors. (Reuters) - Indonesia holds a presidential election on Feb. 14, with three contenders vying to succeed incumbent Joko Widodo, or Jokowi, as leader of the world's third-largest democracy and its most populous Muslim-majority nation. He is not a member of a political party but is backed by three parties, including a secular party in the ruling coalition and the conservative Islamic Prosperous Justice Party (PKS). He is the nephew of the late Abdurrahman Wahid, or Gus Dur, a well-respected former president and religious leader. After losing the 2019 election, he was appointed defence minister by Jokowi, a move analysts say helped heal divisions. Prabowo chairs the Great Indonesia Movement (Gerindra) party, which endorsed him as its presidential candidate last year.

The PGA Tour announced on Wednesday that it had reached a deal to raise more than $1.5 billion from a group of U.S. investors, led by the Fenway Sports Group, the parent company of the Boston Red Sox and Liverpool Football Club. The deal would give the PGA Tour a significant amount of cash at a time when it is facing steep competition from its well-financed rival, LIV Golf, which is backed by Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund. The influx of money raises questions about whether a deal the PGA struck six months ago to align itself with the Saudi wealth fund remains necessary. The PGA and the Saudi fund initially set a Dec. 31 deadline to work out details and finalize their deal. The tour’s commissioner, Jay Monahan, said Wednesday on a call with PGA players before the official announcement that the tour “does remain in active and frequent dialogue” with representatives for the Saudi wealth fund.

"It's very hard to imagine that that is consistent with the animal welfare standards that Australians expect to be applied to Australian animals." ROUGH WEATHERAustralia is a major exporter of live animals, shipping more than half a million sheep and half a million cattle last year. Most cattle go to Asian markets such as Indonesia and Vietnam but the Middle East is by far the biggest destination for Australian sheep. Israel is a key market, receiving 86,100 sheep worth $6.5 million and 10,848 cattle worth $14 million from Australia in the first three months of last year, trade data show. Australia's Labor government has pledged to outlaw exports of live sheep in coming years but faces angry pushback from farm groups who say this would put people out of work and destroy farming communities.

Some around Biden agree Manchin may have a point in how to make the pitch. As Biden tries to assert the success of his presidency, Manchin says he shaped “everything” in the president’s agenda. “It’s been far less organized than he expected it to be” and “he doesn’t see a plan coming together,” a person familiar with Hogan’s thinking told CNN. “No matter what side of the fence you might be on, where you are for philosophically, we learned to navigate that,” he told CNN. Institutions Are (Quietly) Taking Sackler Money

When arts organizations began shunning the Sackler family over its role in the U.S. opioid crisis, it wasn’t just American institutions that cut ties. Museums in Britain that had accepted Sackler largess were among the first to take action. After the National Portrait Gallery in London canceled a $1.3 million Sackler donation in 2019, the Tate museum group announced it would not seek any more of the family’s support. Other museums began discussing removing the Sackler name from their walls. According to the Sackler Trust’s latest accounts, which were published this month, the nonprofit committed around 5.2 million pounds, or $6.6 million, in 2022, comprising 66 grants to institutions.

Authorities seeking Ring surveillance videos must now submit a formal legal request to the company, rather than soliciting footage directly from users through the app, Ring said in a blog post Wednesday. Hundreds of law enforcement agencies have struck up partnerships with Ring, according to a tracker maintained by the consumer advocacy group Fight for the Future. But, he warned, it would not necessarily stop police from continuing to persuade Ring users to voluntarily give up their rights. Police are able to contact Ring users off the app. And Ring users can still decide if they want to voluntarily send video, sounds or images from their Ring devices to law enforcement.

There's no longer a nationwide right to abortion and 14 states have bans on abortion at all stages of pregnancy. Colorado has become an island of abortion protections as surrounding states installed restrictions after Roe was overturned. Since 2022, abortion rights supporters have prevailed on all seven statewide ballot measures. Democrats control both chambers of the Legislature and the governor's office and, under state law, abortion is allowed at any point throughout pregnancy, if it's deemed necessary by a doctor. MISSOURI ACTIVISTS CHOOSE AN AMENDMENT TO SUPPORTA coalition of abortion rights supporters in Missouri decided last week which of 11 amendment proposals to support.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk, whose company operates a large plant in China, has said Chinese automakers are the greatest competitors for his Texas-based company. "They were 26% [market share] a few years ago, up to more than 50% in 2022 and headed towards two-thirds by the end of the decade." Chinese companies have begun expanding into Mexico, Europe and elsewhere, Wakefield said. The EU believes Chinese EVs are undercutting the prices of local models by about 20% in the European market. The influx of Chinese EVs has spurred the European Union to launch into government support for the industry.
