Social media users are claiming that the gallery that houses the portrait of Giovanni Arnolfini and his wife (The Arnolfini Marriage here) by Jan van Eyck from 1434) is seeking to remove the painting from display after complaints by visitors due to the former’s likeness to Putin. “BELIEVE IT OR NOT,” reads a Facebook post, “A London gallery wants to remove a painting by Jan van Eyck after frequent complaints from visitors about the likeness of the figure in the painting to Putin” (here). The portrait first went on display in The National Gallery in 1843 (bit.ly/3M7VBd7). The National Gallery told Reuters that the painting is currently on display and that there are no plans to remove it.

A video showing protesters spraying hay on to a police line dates back to a 2015 demonstration in Belgium, but the footage has been recently miscaptioned in posts claiming it depicts a Dutch farmers protest in March 2023. A video purporting to show Soviet-era tanks being shipped from Russia to battle in Ukraine is being circulated online, but the clip predates Russia’s invasion of its neighbour and is unrelated. However, an online search of still images taken from the clip reveals that it dates to at least Jan. 18, 2019, three years before Russia invaded Ukraine. Reuters has previously addressed a misleading claim that a body double for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy was captured on camera (here). The photographs of Vladimir Putin are miscaptioned with false dates and locations.

Again, this is apocalyptic.”But the video dates back to January 2020, at least nine months before COVID-19 vaccines were developed and rolled out in China (here). A 2020 video shows a Chinese doctor collapsing during due to hypoglycemia and exhaustion, not an Australian surgeon “stroking out” because of the COVID-19 vaccine.
