About half of infected people show no symptoms, but in others gonorrhea can lead to painful joints and burning urination. It has become resistant to azithromycin and is increasingly resistant to another antibiotic called ceftriaxone, which is now the standard of care. Based on previous research, the drug is unlikely to be as effective in the throat and rectum, said Dr. Marrazzo. In studies, zoliflodacin appears to be effective against a wide range of resistant strains of gonorrhea. The partnership’s agreement minimizes that chance: The nonprofit plans to manage how the drug is distributed, and to see that it is used only to treat gonorrhea.

IRS announces new income tax brackets

New York CNN —If you are someone who likes to plan ahead on your taxes, the IRS this week released the new inflation-adjusted income tax brackets and standard deduction amounts that will be in effect for tax year 2024. The IRS makes inflation adjustments annually to tax brackets, the standard deduction and some other tax breaks. New income tax bracketsThe US federal income tax code currently has seven tax rates – 10%, 12%, 22%, 24%, 32%, 35% and 37%. For tax year 2024, each of the seven rates will apply to the following new income tax brackets:10%: Income up to $11,600 ($23,200 for married couples filing jointly)12%: Income over $11,600 ($23,200 for joint filers)22%: Income over $47,150 ($94,300 for joint filers)24%: Income over $100,525 ($201,050 for joint filers)32%: Income over $191,950 ($383,900 for joint filers)35%: Income over $243,725 ($487,450 for joint filers)37%: Income over $609,350 ($731,200 for joint filers). Taxable income, remember, is your gross income minus the various tax breaks for which you’re eligible.

Want a four-day workweek? You’re not alone
  + stars: | 2023-11-07 | by ( Jeanne Sahadi | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +3 min
New York CNN —If you’ve always thought you might be happier with a four-day workweek, you’re hardly alone. While studies of four-day workweek experiments in the United States and Europe have found generally positive results in terms of employee productivity and well-being, it’s not necessarily a positive for everyone in every situation. Those who always have to work onsite might get a greater benefit from a four-day workweek because it provides an element of flexibility that they don’t have now. “Whereas, in remote-ready jobs, there is some built-in flexibility, which may create less need for a four-day workweek,” he noted. While the four-day workweek was the top pick overall in the newly released Gallup survey, when it comes to having a positive impact on well-being, two other options were not far behind.

The situation is not yet fully resolved, and it’s unclear just how many banks were affected, although Bank of America, Chase and US Bank have confirmed they are among them. That would include an overdraft fee from your bank if a payment was made from your account before an expected deposit showed up. But if it’s not, contact your bank and let them know the situation needs to be corrected. You also want to avoid a late fee or penalty interest from a creditor if your payment got delayed. “The key is providing verifiable documentation that the delay was not your fault.”At the moment it’s not clear whether or how every affected bank is notifying their customers.

Those same limits apply to 403(b) plans, most 457 plans and the federal government’s Thrift Savings Plan. IRA limits get a boost tooThe IRS also announced it was raising the IRA annual contribution limit to $7,000 next year, from $6,500 this year. If you contribute to a traditional IRA, you won’t owe income tax on your contributions the year you make them. Then when you start taking money from your IRA in retirement or before retirement, your withdrawals will be subject to income tax. Those cut-off limits rise to $240,000 (up from $228,000 today) if the spouse making the IRA contribution does not have access to a workplace plan but the other spouse does.

There are plenty of terms to describe Wall Street power brokers — but none of them matters quite so much right now as the simple phrase "managing director." Wealth management, which has been an area for growth across Wall Street, may prove an exception. "Two years ago, everybody was in the war for talent," said Alan Johnson, a Wall Street compensation expert at Johnson & Associates. Getting a promotion to managing director is tremendously important for the people who are vying for the role. "Once you become an MD, you're going to be making a lot more money.

The DOL’s proposed rule seeks to ensure “all retirement investors receive the same quality of investment advice regardless of product or services,” said DOL Acting Secretary Julie Su in a call with reporters. Across all retirement products, “requiring advisers to make recommendations in the savers’ best interest can increase retirement savers’ returns by between 0.2% and 1.20% per year. Industry pushback expectedThe new proposed rule follows earlier attempts by the Labor Department to broaden and standardize the circumstances in which financial advisers must act in retirement savers’ best interests. It is not clear yet whether the changes called for in the latest proposed rule will be sufficient to quell the opposition earlier versions faced. But industry pushback is expected, including from the Insured Retirement Institute, a trade association for the insured retirement industry.

CNN —South Africa and New Zealand will meet on Saturday in a Rugby World Cup final for the first time since 1995. On that occasion, it was tournament host South Africa which won a close fought contest 15-12 to lift the Webb Ellis Cup for the first time. Twenty-four years on from that enduring moment, it was the inspiring Siya Kolisi who led his country to victory in the 2019 final against England, becoming the first Black captain to lead South Africa to World Cup glory. Before it all collapsed last fall, the cryptocurrency mogul Sam Bankman-Fried was at the center of a global business empire. The 31-year-old mogul started his first company in the San Francisco Bay Area, before moving to Hong Kong and then to the Bahamas, where his FTX cryptocurrency exchange was based until it filed for bankruptcy in November. Along the way, Mr. Bankman-Fried left his mark on luxury homes in Washington and on the Bahamian island of New Providence, and splashed FTX’s logo on a basketball arena in Miami. Pew decided to ask Americans why they think that is and whether they expect more women to occupy top business roles anytime soon. In response to the question, “Why aren’t there more women in top executive business positions?” respondents identified several “major” reasons. Most women (65%) and most Democrats, regardless of gender, (76%) said there are too few women in business leadership. But gender overrode political affiliation when it came to citing views on why more women aren’t at the top in the business world. “Republican and Democratic women are more likely than their male counterparts to say there are too few women in top business leadership positions and to point to certain factors as major obstacles for women,” Pew said.

Gen X isn't financially prepared for retirement

New York CNN —Gen Xers are now in their 40s and 50s and account for about a fifth of the US population. And the median amount that Gen X households have in retirement savings — meaning half have less, half have more — is just $40,000. “Retirement savings for Generation X is highly concentrated among the highest earners,” the report notes. Nevertheless, the average Gen X retirement savings balance (nearly $130,000 for individuals and $243,000 for households) suggests that many higher earners may not be saving enough, if those savings are intended to be one’s main source of income in retirement. Also, changes to an existing Saver’s Credit may help lower income Gen Xers.

Employees may get smaller raises in 2024

New York CNN —US employers are planning smaller pay raises and fewer promotions next year, compared to what they gave this year. Based on their replies, Mercer said compensation budgets for merit increases are expected to grow by an average of 3.5% in 2024, down from 3.8% this year. While the expected pay increases are lower, relative to 2023, they are still higher than they typically were before the pandemic. The expected pay increases for next year reflect “the ongoing tightness of the labor market and low levels of unemployment. “This is a result of off-cycle pay increases, which 59% of employers reported providing in 2023.

New York CNN —New York State is the latest jurisdiction to implement a pay disclosure law that requires employers to list salary ranges for open roles. “We’re seeing a patchwork [of different pay disclosure requirements], which makes it hard for multistate employers to navigate,” said Monica Snyder Perl, a partner at Fisher Phillips. Some laws require employers to disclose ranges just for base pay, but others mandate that information about compensation and benefits be included as well. The impact of the lawsAll the pay disclosure laws are relatively new. Leniency may continue until employers and regulators work out their questions about each jurisdiction’s pay disclosure rules, which are still being interpreted by employment lawyers and, in some cases, being amended by legislators.

A series of setbacks in the House on Tuesday pointed to the difficult reality for House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and the lower chamber, which appears deadlocked amid the latest revolt by House conservatives. In the book, author Walter Isaacson wrote that a Ukrainian drone submarine attack on Russian warships was disrupted by a disconnect from Starlink, ordered by Musk. Excerpts from the book raised alarm bells in Washington, among NATO allies and in the Ukrainian capital. Musk also argued, as he has in the past, that Ukraine should strike a "truce" with Russia. Here is a (highly) abbreviated rundown of how US society settled (so far anyway) on an eight-hour workday. The strike failed … but four years later US Steel reduced its workday from twelve to eight hours.”Pioneering employers — and a six-hour workday — make wavesIn 1926, the Ford Motor Company, under the leadership of Henry Ford, famously instituted an eight-hour-a-day, five-day workweek. Kellogg decided in 1930 to institute six-hour shifts in place of eight-hour shifts, with some reduction in workers’ pay.
