Investors are now focused on the producer prices data due at 8:30 a.m ET that will offer more insight into inflation in the world's largest economy. U.S. Labor Department's producer price index (PPI) for final demand, is expected to rise 0.2% in July, after growing 0.1% in June. "This (PPI) data set is something of a crystal ball for consumer price inflation; when producers charge more for goods the higher costs are usually passed on to households." "Higher yields incentivize investors to park their cash in the safety of bonds, and therefore decreases demand for risky plays like equities."

E-commerce app Temu is taking on the larger Shein by selling cheap Chinese-made goods to Western consumers. The company owned by $119 billion PDD (PDD.O) is more like an online dollar store. Moreover, Temu offers generous discounts and free or subsidised shipping to users. Parent company PDD, whose Pinduoduo e-commerce unit competes with Alibaba (9988.HK) and JD.com (9618.HK) in China, discloses little about its overseas business. China's tech crackdown wiped $1.1 trillion off the valuation of its Big Tech firms. China's economy is struggling to recover after three years of on-off COVID-19 lockdowns. China cracked down on the country's tech sector in 2020, taking down its Big Tech, whose market value has been wiped by $1.1 trillion. But now, authorities are laying out the red carpet for the same firms because the economy is in deep trouble. Local governments in China are wooing tech giants with at least five recent deals to build on the so-called "platform economy," the South China Morning Post reported on Sunday.

Barclays' head of U.S. equity strategy Venu Krishna said in a note to clients that investors are differentiating between tech companies. A few Big Tech names are driving all of the earnings upside, while the outlook for the "Rest of the Tech" is deteriorating, he said. China also urges platforms to “participate in the formulation of international rules and standards” related to generative AI, it said. Generative AI tools like ChatGPT have taken the world by storm. Generative AI refers to the technology that underpins platforms like ChatGPT. In the global race to build guardrails for how governments tap AI, China had gained a significant head start, US Senator Mark Warner warned last month. So far, Baidu, Alibaba and JD.com’s generative AI services are either in the trial stage or being tested by corporate users.
