Jerusalem CNN —Large crowds of protesters across Israel have come out in the 27th consecutive week of demonstrations against the government’s judicial overhaul plans. The protests come just before the bill to lessen judicial oversight of the executive and legislative branches will get its first reading in the Knesset, the national legislature, on Monday. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government has renewed its efforts to pass judicial overhaul, this time in stages, after six months of fierce opposition from center, left and even right-wing citizens, military reservists, and political parties. Israel has no check on the power of the Knesset other than the Supreme Court. As the protests reached their peak this Saturday, social media videos and Israeli press reported Israeli police using water cannons to clear demonstrators from blocking one of Tel Aviv’s main highways.

Jerusalem CNN —A Jerusalem court acquitted an Israeli border police officer of “involuntary reckless manslaughter” in the fatal shooting of Eyad al-Hallaq, an unarmed Palestinian man. The defendant was granted anonymity by the court following a request from the Israeli Border Police, according to Khaled Zabarqa, one of the lawyers for the al-Hallaq family. Zabarqa said al-Hallaq had a “special needs” document issued by Israeli National Insurance, a government entity. The victim’s mother, Rana al-Hallaq, told CNN her son didn’t understand or speak Hebrew. The acquitted officer will return to active duty, and participate in a “commander’s course,” according to a Border Police statement released Thursday.

The annual parade, which marks Israel's capture of Jerusalem in the 1967 war, has increasingly become a show of force for Jewish nationalists, and for Palestinians a blatant provocation meant to undermine their ties to the city. With another round of fighting between Israel and Gaza militants ending only last weekend, appetite for escalation appeared low. An Israeli police raid in the flashpoint site in April triggered rocket fire from groups in Gaza, Lebanon and Syria. Casting itself in recent years as a defender of Jerusalem's Palestinians and Muslim holy sites, Hamas urged Palestinians to bolster their presence at the compound ahead of Thursday and confront any Israeli encroachment. The Palestinians want the eastern section, annexed by Israel in a move not recognised abroad, as capital of their future state.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu alluded to Israel's calculations at work in dealing with Hamas in Gaza. "The gap between Hamas and Islamic Jihad is rooted in the fact that Hamas has a political programme and governing authority, whereas the Jihad has neither," he said. However, Israeli officials say Islamic Jihad would not be able to fire rockets without approval from Hamas. An Islamic Jihad official offered a similar line. "That's why they (Hamas) focus their attacks in the West Bank," the regional diplomat said.

TEL AVIV — Israel and Palestinian Islamic Jihad have agreed to a cease-fire ending five days of fighting between the two sides, one U.S. official and one Israeli official told NBC News on Saturday. The fighting has killed 33 Palestinians inside Gaza, including at least 13 civilians. Over the past few days, Israel has conducted more airstrikes, killing other senior Islamic Jihad commanders and destroying their command centers and rocket-launching sites. The Israeli military alleged the targeted homes belonged to or were used by Islamic Jihad militants. Islamic Jihad has retaliated by firing over 1,200 rockets toward southern and central Israel, according to the military.
