CNN —Insurers have begun calculating the financial damage caused by last week’s devastating CrowdStrike software glitch that crashed computers, canceled flights and disrupted hospitals all around the globe — and the picture isn’t pretty. The estimates come the same day that CrowdStrike issued a preliminary report on how it inadvertently caused the widespread IT meltdown. Numerous Fortune 500 companies use CrowdStrike’s cybersecurity software to detect and block hacking threats. Only a small portion, around 10% to 20%, may be covered by cybersecurity insurance policies, Parametrix added. The company routinely tests its software updates before pushing them out to customers, CrowdStrike said in the report.

CNN —New York’s attorney general urged the Supreme Court on Wednesday to stay out of Donald Trump’s hush money criminal case, arguing the nation’s highest court should not grant a novel request by Missouri to pause his sentencing hearing and lift the gag order imposed on the former president in the case. Earlier this month, Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey, a Republican, asked the Supreme Court for permission to file a complaint against New York to pause Trump’s September sentencing hearing and lift the restrictions on his speech – arguing in part that New York was infringing on the right of Missouri voters to hear from presidential candidates. “Allowing Missouri to file this suit for such relief against New York would permit an extraordinary and dangerous end-run around former President Trump’s ongoing state court proceedings and the statutory limitations on this Court’s jurisdiction to review state court decisions,” she wrote. For now, a limited gag order barring Trump from publicly speaking about prosecutors, court staff and their families remains in place at least until Trump is sentenced. CNN’s Lauren del Valle contributed to this report.

CNN —Donald Trump may not have changed in the past week, but the presidential race clearly has. ► Watched President Joe Biden be isolated by the growing number of Democrats who worry he can’t beat him. If Biden were to look for inspiration on how to overcome the naysayers, he could find it in Trump. When Democrats win those states, they can win the White House. In the intervening days, CNN has learned that Crooks searched for information on both Trump and Biden, including for details about the Democratic National Convention.

One after another, for four days, the testimonies for Donald J. Trump poured out. “God spared his life,” Franklin Graham, the evangelist, proclaimed. “Divine intervention” saved his father from the assassin’s bullet, Eric Trump said. Ben Carson, the former secretary of housing and urban development, said that when he saw his friend “escape death by mere inches” his thoughts “immediately turned to the book of Isaiah, which says, ‘No weapon formed against you shall prosper.’”And Mr. Trump himself said at the Republican National Convention, “I felt very safe because I had God on my side.”As many in the audience nodded and cried in the darkness, the message was unmistakable. That is especially the case for couples over 50 — for whom living together may seem the easier option if they have already had long-term marriages. An analysis of federal data by the Pew Research Center found that in 2016, couples over 50 represented roughly a quarter of adults living together. But while some concerns may be more urgent for older couples, here are some key questions couples of any age should consider when deciding to live together:1. LONDON — The new U.K. government is on Thursday set to propose legislation to prevent "significant uncosted measures" from being announced without an analysis of their impact on public finances. The OBR would be able to produce its analysis at the time of its choosing, according to notes on the bill released Wednesday. The notes contain a veiled reference to what became known as the British "mini-budget crisis" under former Prime Minister Liz Truss and ex-Finance Minister Kwasi Kwarteng. Shortly after taking up their posts in early September 2022, Truss and Kwarteng announced a raft of tax cuts in an unscheduled fiscal announcement that was described by analysts as "seismic." Both Truss and Kwarteng resigned over the turmoil after less than two months in their respective offices, and the majority of the measures were reversed.

Japan's yen scaled a six-week high on Thursday, spurring speculation of an official push, while the dollar nursed broad losses as markets prepared for U.S. rate cuts in a few months. "Many traders and Japanese investors, after intervention, were looking to reload on their trades," said National Australia Bank strategist Rodrigo Catril in Sydney. Interest rate markets are pricing more than 60 basis points of U.S. interest rate cuts this year and some 20 basis points of hikes in Japan, narrowing the wide rates gap that had encouraged investors taking on large short positions in the yen. So far this year the yen is the worst-performing G10 currency on the dollar, losing more than 9%, while the yuan is down about 2.2%.

Milwaukee CNN —Donald Trump will pull off his greatest feat yet as Joe Biden confronts his darkest hour. The 45th president’s comeback will only be fully realized if he becomes the second one-term president to win a return to the White House in November. But that’s one reason why his campaign is pulling its punches on Biden in the hope he stays in the race. President Joe Biden gestures to reporters as he steps off Air Force One upon arrival at Dover Air Force Base on July 17, 2024. After Trump escaped the assassination attempt in Pennsylvania, his campaign has leveraged the aftermath to reshape his image.

"We cannot let the challenges of the recent past define our relationships of the future," Starmer said in a Wednesday statement from Downing Street. It comes as the specter of a second presidency from Republican candidate Donald Trump looms heavy over Europe after an assassination attempt over the weekend buoyed support for the former president. Both Trump and his newly announced running mate JD Vance have indicated that continued support for Europe — and in particular Ukraine — are not guaranteed under a second Trump administration. The Republican presidential nominee has repeatedly lambasted the continent's lack of defense spending, and has threatened to pull out of NATO, while Vance has shown ambivalence over U.S. intervention in foreign affairs. In anticipation, European NATO members have been upping their defense spending, including a new commitment from Starmer to spend 2.5% of U.K. gross domestic product (GDP) on defense.

It also was the capstone of her highly scrutinized handling of the historic Trump case, in which she was known to drag out the pretrial proceedings, entertain long-shot legal theories offered by the former president and issue cumbersome orders that flummoxed lawyers on both sides of the case. Well before Monday’s ruling, outside cheerleaders of the special counsel, including many Trump critics, were calling on Smith to seek Cannon’s removal from the case. None of Thomas’ eight colleagues signed on to his solo concurring opinion, as Smith noted in court filings last week arguing to Cannon that the concurrence should not bear on the classified documents case. The way she has managed her docket has kept the case at a snail’s pace, playing into Trump’s strategy of delay. Or it has happened when the judge has “repeatedly” refused to comply with the appeals court’s instructions on a particular issue in a case, he said.

Yen jumps on suspected intervention, sterling hits one-year high

The yen rose sharply on Wednesday in what traders suspected was likely the result of yet another intervention from Japanese authorities to prop up the battered currency from multidecade lows. The euro was last down 0.8% at 171.15 yen, while sterling fell 0.76% to 203.75 yen. Combined with the estimated amount spent a day earlier, Japan is suspected to have bought nearly 6 trillion yen via intervention last week. That sent traders paring back bets of a rate cut from the Bank of England in August, providing a small boost to sterling , which was last up 0.43% to $1.3029. But the more important data is the inflation data, and that's telling the market that the Fed is in a position to cut fairly soon."

Thousands of Trump supporters in Milwaukee on Monday night hailed their leader, elevating him from MAGA superhero to saint-like status. For Trump’s millions of American fans, Monday night was a validation of their faith in God and the ex-president and the righteousness of his mission. The dollar fell slightly on Monday after comments from Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, while cryptocurrencies rose on bets that an assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump lifted his reelection chances. The dollar hung around five-week lows on Tuesday as comments from Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell bolstered the case for a rate cut in September, while cryptocurrencies gained on rising odds of former President Donald Trump getting reelected. The comments, likely Powell's last until his press conference following the Fed's July 30-31 meeting, shifted rate cut expectations. Markets are now anticipating 68 basis points of easing this year, with a rate cut in September fully priced in, CME FedWatch tool showed. "Markets may need to wait longer for the confirmation of their September rate cut hopes, and growth and labor data will be on the radar such as retail sales today."
