While locking their credit won't solve all cybersecurity issues related to stolen Social Security numbers, it's one extra layer of protection parents can implement. Parents can take these steps proactively even if there's nothing to suggest a minor's credit has been compromised such as unexpected credit card solicitations or bills received in the minor's name. It can take some time and effort to lock a child's credit, but the outlay is minimal compared with what can be a lengthy and emotional credit restoration process. Locking a child's credit won't protect against all of these, but it's a solid step in the right direction, financial professionals said. To check to see if their child has a credit report, parents can mail a letter with their request to each of the credit bureaus.

A few weeks ago, I started asking left-leaning people their thoughts on slurs being peppered into everyday conversations. An inclusive eraKayla Cash, a 31-year-old PR manager, grew up using words she now considers offensive. Some of the language felt ubiquitous; she remembers the 2004 release of "Let's Get It Started," the Grammy-winning Black Eyed Peas hit that was originally released as "Let's Get Retarded." It was billed as discussions between two "bohemian layabouts" who called out performative aspects of progressive politics — while using language more often associated with the right, such as that offensive term for someone with intellectual disabilities. Looser language and new rulesEveryone I talked to for this story had rules for which words they would and wouldn't say.

Researchers first spotted the insect, dubbed the “ManhattAnt,” while doing a survey on ants in New York City in 2011. By comparing the New York ants with the European ones, Seifert was able to confirm the ant’s identity. Because the nests work together instead of against one another, they can spread faster and easily dominate an area by outcompeting native species, he added. “One of the things we know about a lot of invasive ant species is they displace the native species, and the native species that they’re displacing usually have very specialized roles in the ecosystem, so you’re sort of disrupting that ecosystem when these species get introduced,” Moreau said. Time will tell whether the ant has become more than just a nuisance and is disrupting the ecosystem, Penick said.

CNN —Halliburton confirmed on Friday that it was hit by a cyberattack that forced the major oilfield services company to take systems offline. The company said the investigation is “ongoing” and its response includes restoring systems and assessing the damage. The company did not immediately respond to a request for further comment about whether its operations have been disrupted. The Energy Department told CNN on Thursday that there were no signs that energy services had been impacted. Halliburton previously would say only that it was experiencing an “issue” without confirming or denying a Reuters report it was cyber-related.

Shein reveals child labor cases at its suppliers

Fast fashion retailer Shein found two cases of child labor at its suppliers last year, it said in its 2023 sustainability report, as it stepped up audits of manufacturers in China to assuage criticisms of its low-cost business model ahead of a planned flotation. Shein tightened its supplier policy last October after the child labor cases were found, so that any severe breaches — called “Immediate Termination Violations” — would result in ending the relationship with the supplier immediately. Previously, suppliers such as those that employed minors had 30 days to resolve the issue, failing which Shein would cut ties. That violation was found in 1.8% of supplier audits in 2021, 0.3% of audits in 2022, and 0.1% in 2023. “We remain vigilant in guarding against such violations going forward, and in line with current policies, will terminate any noncompliant suppliers,” Shein said in the report.

Kamala Harris had a message for America about Donald Trump and JD Vance on Thursday night. “Simply put, they are out of their minds,” she said to cheers from thousands of Democratic convention delegates in United Center. She was talking about their draconian abortion stances but it could have applied to so much more. Well, we trust women.”Harris has to prove that she is a woman America can trust, as she tries to get the country to do something it has never done before: elect a woman as president. She promised that she would “proudly” sign a bill restoring abortion rights across America.

At least, that's what data security experts like Matt Radolec, vice president of incident response at data security company Varonis, say. "Copilots have pass-through permissions," Radolec said. There's also value in proceeding at a slow and steady pace with gen AI processes. Instead, Ensono is developing its own tool so the company can better enable and control its data security. Gen AI has made cybersecurity mistakes costlier, and insiders now pose a bigger threat — malicious or otherwise — than ever before.

As end-of-summer travel lines back up at TSA airport checkpoints in the U.S., one overseas airport is going all-in on a biometric passenger experience. The Smart Travel Project at Zayed International Airport in Abu Dhabi will involve biometric sensors at every airport identification checkpoint by 2025. Airport security and travel experts have generally cheered the move. "Facial recognition is the future, and we will start to get intelligent with airport security and focus on the traveler rather than the items they bring. Among the concerns expressed are what type of data someone would need to give during the biometric enrollment process, and whether biometric security processes will be used to track movements throughout the airport, or if biometric data will be used outside the airport.

Lisa Jeanine Findley, 53, faces charges of mail fraud and aggravated identity theft, federal prosecutors in Missouri said. Keough had sued a company that claimed it owned the rights to Graceland, and a judge ruled in Keough's favor in May. Sakorn Sukkasemsakorn | Istock | Getty ImagesAbout 2.9 billion people may have had their personal information hacked, a new proposed class-action lawsuit alleges. If true, reports suggest all Americans may have had valuable personal information compromised — including full names, current and past addresses, Social Security numbers and information on parents, siblings and other relatives. In 2013, a Yahoo data breach may have hit all the company's accounts, or a total of 3 billion people. "Freezing your credit is the single most important thing you can do when you get a data breach notice," Lee said. While freezing your credit will limit access to your credit reports, it won't block it completely.

A high school English teacher is suing a Wisconsin school district, alleging it did not renew his contract last year because he refused to use the preferred names of two transgender students. Argyle School District Superintendent Randy Refsland said in an email Tuesday night that he could not comment because the matter was being litigated in court. But after one of the students expressed unhappiness with the situation — the student's father was described as a fellow district teacher — the district demanded adherence to the policy of using students' preferred names and pronouns, according to the suit. Greul said that this fight over first names and pronouns will be crucial for "everyday Americans across the country." A 2022 report on pronouns by the Minnesota Department of Health says that the correct use of preferred pronouns "saves lives."

When people say they're concerned about "the economy," it can mean a lot of things — grocery prices, gas prices, housing prices, healthcare. For one thing, it's not clear that voters think Harris, as vice president, has had much involvement in Biden's economic policies. People remember the Trump economy as a better time — interest rates were lower, prices were lower, houses seemed more affordable. AdvertisementThe task for Harris now is to lay out an economic identity and agenda before others beat her to it. The Trump campaign and the GOP are trying to tie her to the negative feelings around the Biden economy, to affordability and inflation.

A study on long Covid fails to bring researchers closer to finding a diagnostic test. Why there’s no test yet for long CovidAn estimated 17 million people have long Covid, but identifying people with the condition still can't be achieved with one diagnostic test, researchers said this week. So “clinicians are left to continue doing what we have done in the past,” which is to rule out other potential health conditions rather than diagnosing long Covid, they said. The study is part of the National Institute of Health’s RECOVER Initiative, a billion-dollar-plus effort launched in 2021 to research causes and treatments of long Covid. The Freedom Caucus added that in the event of a stopgap bill, funding should be “extended into early 2025” to avoid passing a funding bill that “preserves Democrat spending.” Both demands would spark a standoff with Democratic lawmakers.
