The official said that the Secret Service had even tried to deny a request from Trump's team to install metal detectors at his son Barron Trump's high school graduation in May, which the former president attended with his wife, Melania. The official told The Times that the Secret Service had argued that the graduation was not a "political" event before eventually caving in. Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi previously said that "there's an untrue assertion that a member of the former president's team requested additional resources and that those were rebuffed." In practice, whoever the presidential nominee chooses as their running mate is typically accepted by the delegates. What happens to the money raised for Biden’s reelection? Biden’s reelection efforts had raised a total of $240 million at the end of June. Those funds are split across the DNC, allied committees and Biden’s campaign committee itself. While no US president has been pressured out of a reelection campaign due to concerns over his mental fitness, it is not unprecedented for an incumbent president to abandon his reelection campaign — but it is rare.

Following Biden's endorsement, the president's reelection campaign committee rebranded itself to "Harris for President," handing her the keys to a $91 million war chest. Beyond seeking to upstage the first female vice president, other ambitious Democrats would have to raise their national profile in a way Harris does not. AdvertisementThe prospect of Harris' nomination is far from a political panacea for nervous Democrats. As leader of his party, Biden pushed the DNC to rubber stamp his plan to shake up the primary calendar. If the virtual vote moves forward, ambitious Democrats will face an even tighter window to organize opposition to Harris' nomination.

CNN —President Joe Biden says he is not seeking reelection in a letter posted to his official account on X. “It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President,” Biden wrote. “My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala Harris as my Vice President,” Biden wrote. It’s also the latest shocking development in a highly charged political campaign that has included an attempt on Trump’s life. The mood in the White House and at Biden’s campaign headquarters in Wilmington had turned sour.

The Secret Service denied some of former President Donald Trump's requests for additional security resources over the past two years, an official with the agency confirmed to NBC News. The Secret Service official said extra security accommodations could not always be made for Trump due to the department's limited resources. "In some instances where specific Secret Service specialized units or resources were not provided, the agency made modifications to ensure the security of the protectee," Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi told NBC News. Last Sunday, he said the assertion that the Secret Service had rebuffed Trump's team's requests for additional security were "absolutely false." In the wake of the attempted assassination of Trump, the Secret Service has been under intense scrutiny.

CNN —Former President Donald Trump’s security detail had complained they were not being given enough resources and personnel by the Secret Service over the past two years, and the agency acknowledged Saturday it denied some requests. A spokesperson for the Secret Service said in a statement Saturday that the agency has not provided certain resources in the past but has instead provided other security measures including from local partners. The Washington Post and The New York Times reported earlier Saturday that the Secret Service denied previous request from Trump’s security team over the past two years. In response to questions from CNN over whether the Secret Service had denied additional security requests, a spokesperson told CNN the agency makes “modifications” when certain resources are not provided to protectees. “In some instances where specific Secret Service specialized units or resources were not provided, the agency made modifications to ensure the security of the protectee,” Anthony Guglielmi, chief of communications for the Secret Service, wrote in a statement.

Read previewIn a stunning turnaround, President Joe Biden announced on Sunday that he is withdrawing his candidacy for reelection in 2024. Biden on Sunday also endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris to succeed him in the Oval Office. In the days following the debate, Biden faced growing pressure to step aside, with an increasing number of Democratic politicians urging the 81-year-old president to do so. Polling had long shown Biden trailing Trump both nationally and in key swing states, and the debate represented a key opportunity for the president to turn the race around.

Instead, Biden’s campaign unraveled over the course of the next 24 days. It’s a high-risk, high-reward gamble for Democrats, resetting a campaign Biden was losing with a new nominee just 107 days before the election. Dunn and her husband, Bob Bauer, were among Biden’s debate prep team and had faced the ire of the president’s family in the aftermath of the debate. Several news outlets, including CNN, reported that Pelosi and former President Barack Obama had privately expressed concerns about the future of Biden’s campaign. That same day, ABC News reported that Schumer told Biden in their Saturday meeting that it would be best if he bowed out of the presidential race.

CNN —President Joe Biden ran for reelection to save democracy. “It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President,” Biden said in a letter he posted to X on Sunday afternoon. His struggles validated concerns of majorities of voters that he would be too old for a second term that would have ended when he is 86. But in the end, Biden could not find a way to make voters unsee the poignant picture of an 81-year-old commander in chief who appeared to have seriously declined and was stumbling in the debate. Years earlier, in March 1952, Harry S. Truman, another Democratic president, had decided not to seek his own second term.

In the days following the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump, Cheatle has done no press conferences and very few interviews. “We would have never let him go out there if we thought there was a threat to him,” one source present with Trump told CNN. Cheatle left the Secret Service in 2021 as the Assistant Director of the Office of Protective Operations - a role she held when the Secret Service scrambled to protect then-Vice President Mike Pence from rioters on January 6, 2021. “I’m very sorry to reach this conclusion: I have no confidence in the leadership of the United States Secret Service.

But if that suddenly changes, two dozen leading Democratic politicians and operatives told CNN, they can’t realistically see this ending any other way. Still, it’s an idea some Harris backers support, doubting that anyone serious would challenge her, as much chest puffing as there is behind the scenes. Multiple Democratic members of Congress who have called for Biden to go declined on Friday when asked by CNN if they were ready to say they want Harris to be the nominee. “I do believe it has to be the vice president. CNN —Investigators believe the gunman who attempted to assassinate former President Donald Trump may have used a drone on a reconnaissance trip to the rally site on the day of the shooting, a law enforcement official familiar with the investigation told CNN. Investigators searching Thomas Crooks’ belongings found a drone in his car. The discoveries of the ladder, backpack and drone come as investigators are struggling to find a motive for Crooks’ assault. After the shooting, multiple law enforcement sources said investigators found a bulletproof vest, three fully loaded magazines and two remote-controlled explosive devices in Crooks’ car. Additionally, after a search of his residence, investigators discovered another bulletproof vest, another remote-controlled explosive device and a 3D printer, according to multiple law enforcement sources.

Sick with Covid and abandoned by allies, President Biden has been fuming at his Delaware beach house, increasingly resentful about what he sees as an orchestrated campaign to drive him out of the race and bitter toward some of those he once considered close, including his onetime running mate Barack Obama. Mr. Biden has been around politics long enough to assume that the leaks appearing in the media in recent days are being coordinated to raise the pressure on him to step aside, according to people close to him. He considers Representative Nancy Pelosi, the former House speaker, the main instigator, but is irritated at Mr. Obama as well, seeing him as a puppet master behind the scenes. It was Mr. Obama who elevated Mr. Biden from a presidential also-ran to the vice presidency, setting him up to win the White House in 2020, and it was Ms. Pelosi and Senator Chuck Schumer, the Senate Democratic leader, who pushed through his landmark legislative achievements. But several people close to Mr. Biden, who insisted on anonymity to discuss internal matters, described an under-the-weather president coughing and hacking hundreds of miles from the corridors of power as his presidency meets its most perilous moment.
