Paul Baiocchi of SS&C ALPS Advisors thinks it is a sound strategy because he sees the Fed easing rates. ALPS is the issuer of several dividend exchange-traded funds including the ALPS O'Shares U.S. Quality Dividend ETF (OUSA) and its counterpart, the ALPS O'Shares U.S. Small-Cap Quality Dividend ETF (OUSM). Relative to the S&P 500 , both dividend ETFs are overweight health care, financials and industrials , according to Baiocchi. Mike Akins, ETF Action's founding partner, views OUSA and OUSM as defensive strategies because the stocks generally have clean balance sheets.

Harris hasn’t yet released many details about her strategy to wipe out medical debt, but policy experts say a newly implemented medical debt relief program from North Carolina could offer a roadmap. Roy Cooper announced that nearly 100 hospitals in the state had signed on to participate in the Medical Debt Relief Incentive Program, which he said will incentivize hospitals to eliminate $4 billion in medical debt for 2 million low- and middle-income patients over the next two years. At a campaign event last week in Raleigh, North Carolina, Harris thanked Cooper for canceling medical debt in his state, and Cooper introduced Harris at the convention Thursday. It can take some time and effort to lock a child's credit, but the outlay is minimal compared with what can be a lengthy and emotional credit restoration process. Locking a child's credit won't protect against all of these, but it's a solid step in the right direction, financial professionals said. To check to see if their child has a credit report, parents can mail a letter with their request to each of the credit bureaus.

Kamala Harris capped her first month as the Democratic Party’s presidential candidate with a roughly 35-minute convention speech last night that embodied her aggressive efforts to win over swing voters. It was a patriotic speech that was hawkish on foreign policy and border security. She described the United States as the greatest country in the world — a view many Americans hold but most Democratic voters do not — and she ended by saying that being an American was “the greatest privilege on earth.” She promised to confront China, Russia, Iran and Iran-backed terrorists and to make sure that the U.S. military remained the “most lethal fighting force in the world.”She also offered a series of populist promises to help the middle class by reducing the cost of housing and health care — policies that many independents and some Republicans favor. Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., fended off several primary challengers Tuesday, NBC News projects, a victory for progressives after two of her fellow members of the “squad” suffered defeats this summer. But the widowed 78-year-old now has to skimp on her meals because her Social Security benefits haven’t kept up with the rising costs for food, housing and health care in recent years. Social Security benefits have lost 20% of their buying power since 2010, according to a recent analysis by The Senior Citizens League, an advocacy group. Every January, Social Security recipients get an annual cost-of-living adjustment, known as a COLA, but the increases often don’t keep up with the actual rise in prices – hurting senior citizens, many of whom live on fixed incomes and depend heavily on their Social Security benefits. Social Security benefits have risen by 58% between 2010 and 2024, but the cost of goods and services purchased by typical retirees jumped 73% during that time, the league said. For Albrecht, it feels like her Social Security benefits have lost more than 20% of their buying power.

An amendment that would enshrine abortion access in Missouri's constitution will appear on the state's general election ballot, Missouri Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft's office announced Tuesday.
