Troops freed an Israeli soldier from Hamas captivity during the ground operation in Gaza, the military said on Monday. An Israeli military spokesperson declined to comment on details of the offensive, citing sensitivity with the issue. Saying any lull in fighting would benefit Hamas, Israel rejected the calls, in the first public split between Israel and its allies since Oct. 7. ENCIRCLING GAZA CITYAfter amassing hundreds of thousands of soldiers, including reservists, on its border with Gaza, Israel made the first sustained ground incursions of the offensive on Friday. One month on, the Israel-Hamas conflict explained

The conflict has led to a humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, with more than 10,000 people killed there, according to the Palestinian health ministry in Ramallah. Unlike some other Palestinian factions, Hamas refuses to engage with Israel and does not recognize its right to exist. Palestinian Hamas members in Gaza City ride an armored vehicle seized from Fatah, a rival Palestinian political party, during a celebration rally in June 2007. The Pentagon last month ordered a second carrier strike group to the eastern Mediterranean and sent Air Force fighter jets to the region. On Israel’s northern border, Iran-backed Hezbollah has engaged in an exchange of fire since the Gaza war began.

Late last year, it installed 38 chargers for electric trucks operated by Maersk at two sites in the Los Angeles area. There were 1.8 million conventional medium and heavy duty commercial vehicles operating in the state in 2021, according to data from the California Air Resources Board. Rubin died Friday at a hospital in Manhattan after “a brief and sudden illness,” according to his nephew, David Rotter. “Steve Rubin was a great publisher,” Grisham said in a statement. “For more than a month, it was humanly impossible to miss ‘Fire and Fury,’" Rubin wrote in his memoir “Words and Music,” published earlier this year. Rubin joined Bantam Books, a venerable paperback publisher, in the mid-1980s, and remained there for six years before leaving for Doubleday. Jamie Dimon makes anxiety a feature not a bug

The mega-bank Jamie Dimon runs is performing strongly, and yet he openly frets and rants about what’s coming: higher interest rates, smothering regulation, recession, war. Lest nerves be soothed by those trends, Dimon lays on caveats with a trowel. Dimon can afford to dwell on the negative because JPMorgan is strong and liquid. If calamity strikes, JPMorgan’s high returns, high capital levels and sheer size make it akin to a safe haven. It also slightly reduced its forecast of expenses and credit-card write-offs from numbers given with second-quarter earnings.

Costco and Target issued contrasting statements Tuesday about how retail crime is affecting them. Target said it would close 9 stores, citing crime – Costco said theft was "not a big issue for us." It also noted that theft incidents seem to be getting increasingly violent. Costco's success in skirting the impact of retail theft comes down to several operational factors that seem to run counter to Target's approach to business. ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — A privately owned high-speed passenger train service launched Friday between Florida's two biggest tourist hubs. The Brightline train is a $5 billion bet by owner Fortress Investment Group that eventually 8 million people annually will take the 3.5-hour, 235-mile (378-kilometer) trip between Miami and Orlando — about 30 minutes less than the average drive. Brightline, which began running its neon-yellow trains the 70 miles (112 kilometers) between Miami and West Palm Beach in 2018, is the first private intercity passenger service to begin U.S. operations in a century. The death is the privately owned railroad’s 12th in 2023 and its 98th since July 2017. This Tiny Parasitic Wasp Can Drill Through Plastic
  + stars: | 2023-09-21 | by ( Darren Incorvaia | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
By the time Matvey Nikelshparg was 13, he was obsessed with parasitoid wasps, tiny insects that lay their eggs on or inside other bugs. Under a microscope in a lab he had assembled at home, he discovered that one species had a startling superpower: It could use an organ that protrudes from its abdomen to drill through a plastic petri dish. Eupelmus messene is a whisper of a wasp. The insect’s target is the larvae of other wasp species, which lay their eggs inside of galls in an effort to protect them from danger. In his experiments at home, Mr. Nikelshparg had set out to study what would happen if there were multiple E. messene wasps and only one host larva.

The government’s case is not that Google violated the law in becoming a search giant. Instead, the government claims that after Google became dominant, the company broke the law with its tactics to defend its monopoly. Google replies that the government’s case is an artifice of misleading theory unsupported by the facts. Those truths, according to Google, are that the company holds its leading position in search because of its technical innovation. Those contracts, Google argues, help reduce prices for smartphones and benefit consumers.

Value investing can be challenging, humbling, and even lonely, as fund manager Sam Peters has learned over the last three decades. Markets are usually efficient, Peters acknowledged, meaning that stocks usually trade near their fair value. Thanks to this method, Peters' portfolio often has an unconventional combination of companies that offers diversification with the potential to compound abnormally large returns over time. Peters added: "I think we're going to be in a higher nominal rate environment, higher inflation environment, higher rate environment. Such a setup would favor value stocks over their growth peers, Peters said.

A surveillance video shared by the interior ministry on Thursday shows the suspects attempting to bring the captagon tablets through Dubai’s Jebel Ali Port. UAE authorities have seized hundreds of thousands of captagon pills since 2019. Captagon was originally the brand name for a medicinal product containing the synthetic stimulant fenethylline. Experts say the vast majority of global captagon production occurs in Syria, with the Gulf region being its primary destination.
